He was 61. “Your support and well wishes are so appreciated. Thank you,” Layton, posted to the social media site Twitter in July after announcing he was battling a new form of cancer. “I will fight this and beat it.” It ended up being the last public announcement he would make in his long political career, which saw him evolve from campus activist to rabble-rousing left-wing municipal councilor to the most electorally successful leader of the federal New Democrats in history. Layton had been on a leave of absence as party leader since July 25, when he temporarily stepped aside to fight a second — and evidently much more serious — bout of cancer. It is cliché to say that a politician has politics in his blood, and yet there are few politicians who embody it the way Layton did, with his family involvement in the life reaching all the way back to the birth of the country.
http://www.thestar.com/iphone/news/canada/article/1042988--jack-layton-dead-at-61?bn=1 Sorry for the mobile news links, on my phone. Even though I may not have agreed with his policies, he was an amazing politician with great charisma and enthusiasim. It's sad this had to happen both so early in his life and right after his party's greatest victory. Rest in Peace.
There goes my dreams of a half-decent PM.
Ah damn, this is really sad. Whether or not you shared his political opinions, he was a great guy. Wonder what will happen to the NDP now.
Holy shit, I could barely believe this when I first read it, What a terrible sequence of events, as soon as the NDP becomes the official opposition Jack Layton dies almost immediately after. what the fuck cancer what the fuck
Oh man I just heard about this from my Canadian uncle, he seemed pretty cool.
Heard about this 10 minutes ago. He was probably my favourite politician.
Well Canada's fucked [editline]22nd August 2011[/editline] Hope this gives the NDP even more momentum as they try to carry on his enthusiasm

Politicians like him are few and far between, and whoever this interim leader lady is definitely doesn't seem to be able to fill the void Jack left. He was the NDP, and it's going to take nothing short of a miracle to find someone like him who shares his views.

I didn't expect this. I've listened to some of his speeches and he seemed like a rather good politician. My condolences go to all Canadians and I hope NDP gets a new leader of his calibre.
They need to find a lady with a moustache.
I don't think Thatcher is really in line with NDP policies.
my dad died of cancer last year and he didn't make it in the news so fuck him and rest in peace
Was your dad the leader of the opposition of a major country
my dad died of cancer last year and he didn't make it in the news so fuck him and rest in peace
People die every day.
He was such a good man. Now I really regret not attending his rally in the run up to the last election. RIP :(
my dad died of cancer last year and he didn't make it in the news so fuck him and rest in peace
I'm sorry millions from around the world were not informed about who your dad is and what he had achieved. You don't have to be rude about.
He was the last hope for a good Prime Minister in Canada. There's still a chance that his successor will live up to him, but it's pretty small. Today is a dark day for Canada. RIP Jack Layton.
Aww damnit. I really liked Jack Layton.
I didn't really like the guy, but I agreed with his policies. Regardless, a good politician. Rest in peace dude.

Also I can say I remember exactly where I was when he died: asleep in my bed
