A couple months ago I got a D-Boys M4 with plans to do some work on it. Just recently, a friend and I are shooting it, and we smell smoke. It stops firing and I look over to see what the problem is. I notice smoke coming out of the back, and we quickly open up the battery compartment in the stock to see what the hell happened. Well, the shitty Chinese battery had done something weird and melted the covering off the wires and made them short-circuit.
Now; here's my dillema: Will I have to rewire the entire thing; is the motor gonna be fried; should I just sell it as a parts gun?
Ouch. Did/does the gun have a fuse?
Once, my friend's gun caught on fire.
We were just like, "Hey man, your gun is on fire. You should do something about that."
I dunno, if you want a project gun, this is it. It could be completely screwed up, or it might just need a quick fix. Only way to tell is to start fixing it. :/

Yeah, but I'm not sure it was before the short. I still have to disassemble the stock to find out.
First rule of airsoft kids, don't use the shitty battery that came with the gun.
The battery that came with my gun is fine.
Also ROFL!

$1.00 Colt Python .357 Magnum Revolver
$29 P90 Electic Airsoft Gun AEG
90% of batteries that come with airsoft guns are garbage. Most high end guns (i.e. G&G) don't even come with batteries.
A new wiring set and a cheap JG motor should run you under $50 if you look in the right places. Though you will have to know how to disassemble and reassemble your gearbox. If you don't, let someone else do it who does, just provide them with the parts.

How much would it cost to just replace the whole assembly?
What you mean the whole gearbox?
Depending on the brand $60-$500+ for a new full assembled gearbox.
While a wiring set can be $15-$25.
