Harrison Ford mistakenly lands on taxiway, low-passes over taxiing Boeing 737
SANTA ANA, Calif. – New video shows the moment that actor Harrison Ford flew over the top of a commercial airplane while landing his private aircraft after being instructed to use another location at John Wayne Airport on Monday.
Air traffic controllers cleared Ford, who was piloting a single-engine Aviat Husky, to land on runway 20-L at the airport and Ford correctly read back the clearance, the source said.
Ford then landed on a taxiway that runs parallel to the runway and flew over a Boeing 737.
An air traffic control recording captured Ford asking “Was that airliner meant to be underneath me?”
Air traffic controllers then told the actor that he had landed on the taxiway.
The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating the incident. The mishap could result in anything from a simple warning to suspension of Ford’s pilot license, the news agency reported.
I'm starting to think maybe Harrison Ford just isn't the best of pilots :v:

Well the other one where he crash landed into a golf course wasn't exactly his fault IIRC.
I hope they don't take his license away but I can only imagine the shitstorm it would be if I did this with one of my school's planes.
Good to see Han Solo still at it
Never tell him the odds

Taxiway C is the same length as 20-L, but it's still a big stuff up at this happened.

He's been in other aircraft crashes too. I was mostly being sarcastic but he really doesn't have the best of track records as a pilot.
Reminds me of when a C17 landed at a small airfield rather than the bigger airport just ahead.

Same length yeah but its very clear which is 20L and which isn't.

He must have not been paying full attention.
He's getting too old to fly I think. People complain about being a bad driver when you get to his age, talk about flying a plane...

At 74 mistakes are more likely unfortunately, he may get more than just a warning from the FAA

wait, that's just one patch of grass over from the strip he did approach? Should that plane have been actively taxiing across that road when he was supposed to be landing only a plane length ahead of it anyways?

If he was going to land on 20L like he was meant to, it wouldn't have mattered, the plane was at taxiway C and would have been well within safe distance.
I've seen planes taxi right next to landing planes and plus his little one was set to land around the middle so it was well away, Ford just screwed up by actually landing on the taxiway the plane was using.
Also like to add it isn't actually all uncommon to have planes land over the top of others when they are taxing over the end, but normally its with much greater height than what Ford did and normally with only planes of his size that don't need much room to land.

No plane ever has clearance to taxi onto the runway whilst a plane fly's above it. They only get clearance once the plane landing has definitely landed. They have to wait behind the holding line to the side of the runway, where the fuck did you hear that planes can land above another plane waiting???
[editline]23rd February 2017[/editline]
The holding plane in this case was directly on the stretch of taxiway Harrison landed on, luckily he was above it.

I've seen it happen personally at 2 airports.
So either Manchester and Stockholm Arlanda are doing something they shouldn't or they're bordering on safe guidelines.
Both airports were extremely busy at the times I've seen it happen, like one was coming in to land right when the other was taxing onto the end, around 6 plane lengths in height between them roughly as well.

Some planes do cross the hold threshold once the plane as gone by, pherhaps before touchdown. I've never heard of a practice where a plane fly's directly over a plane entering or has entered the threshold of the runway

You a Manchester (UK) plane spotter? Its the best place ever to watch planes

Could just be perspective then but it certainly looked like they flew over each other at both airports on the multiple cases, either they taxied too far or something, it still looked perfectly safe though to me as the planes were nowhere near each other.

Likely perspective I guess, most pilots would do a come around if they saw another plane entering/on the runway

Fair enough then, ignore I said that bit. :v:

If they have been given permission to enter after the incoming plane as passed, I've seen them spool up onto the runway just as the landing plane crosses them. Doesn't save their flight time much, but making sure they are on time with clearance time and avoiding cost if they aren't to company is more critical at that point

from what I can tell of the video this is where he ended up-

I have no idea what safety procedures are in the first place but if it's a problem he landed overhead that plane, why isn't it a problem the plane was moving so fast toward the start of 20L just to the side? Not to dismiss the issue of harrison landing on the wrong strip in the first place, though
[editline]e[/editline]
I gotta say though, living in the shadow of an executive airport I've never once seen a plane moving around that close to the runways while another is landing, they're always parked on a small pad to the side til the other is firmly on the ground and slowing to taxi, but again I'm just a passive observer

The aircraft that was approaching 20L was likely given taxi instructions to 20R (the full length runway) and told to hold short 20L for landing traffic. You can see in the video, the departing aircraft was slowly rolling up to the hold short line (the big red mark on the ground, which is kinda like a stop sign for planes), and stopped at it. The departing aircraft did nothing wrong here, it was likely following the directions that ground control gave it, and broke no rules at all.
While it's not stricly illegal to land on a taxiway (especially if it's or an emergency, of if it's a helicopter), Ford was definitely in the wrong here. He's obviously not familiar with the airport, or wasn't paying attention during his landing. He read back instructions to the controllers, so he knew what he was supposed to do, but didn't do it.

Yeah you can see the runway holding position marking just before the green line I drew here.

Here is a example of the holdback lines, the big thick yellow/black, lines/triangles either side of the runway

Those planes are easily some of the most stable aircraft out there.
