From the New Zealand Herald: In January, while he was teaching English in Vietnam, (Brian) Pool suffered a brain hemorrhage and was operated on in a Vietnamese hospital. He was flown to Wellington Hospital where tests found he was carrying the strain of bacterium known as KPC-Oxa 48 – an organism that rejects every kind of antibiotic. Wellington Hospital clinical microbiologist Mark Jones (said): “Nothing would touch it. Absolutely nothing. It’s the first one that we’ve ever seen that is resistant to every single antibiotic known.”
http://www.wired.com/wiredscience/2013/11/end-abx/ Well, shit. :pwn:
madagascar has closed it's borders
Well, atleast the Russians will be resistant [sp]Spoiler Alert: Russia Actually Supporting Phage Therapy[/sp]
madagascar has closed it's borders
Fuck, those Cubans and Malagasies will live to see another day.
I bet it isn't resistant to burning napalm
This is what happens when you invest all your evolution points into drug resistance.
it got one death though bet the dude invested in drug resistance and lethality lol, stupid decision, always go infectivity first
it got one death though bet the dude invested in drug resistance and lethality lol, stupid decision, always go infectivity first
Shhhh!!!....you will spoil the Flu's plan....
The best way to get sick is to avoid getting sick.
I like to see it whether it can survive acid and fire. It may be resisitant to drugs but when it comes to acid or fire, no organism can survive being placed in high heat or super corrosive acids.
it got one death though bet the dude invested in drug resistance and lethality lol, stupid decision, always go infectivity first
you're obviously an amateur. stealth symptoms are key or you suffer extinction! Guess I'm not going home for christmas this year.
we're fucked that's it we had a good run
we're fucked that's it we had a good run
actually the united states would be really safe in the event of a viral outbreak!
I bet it isn't resistant to burning napalm
I hope I don't get infected by it then, I'm pretty sure I'm allergic to napalm.
This is in the North Island, and I'm in the South Island. I'm safe.
it got one death though bet the dude invested in drug resistance and lethality lol, stupid decision, always go infectivity first
Infect everybody in the world and than just kill them all in 2 days.
is this the first-ever completely drug-resistant bacteria?
I bet it isn't resistant to burning napalm
Sadly neither are people.
Christ, it was depressing to read the list of all the things that we lose with antibiotics
I like to see it whether it can survive acid and fire. Not to mention we've found surviving bacteria in orbit.
is this the first-ever completely drug-resistant bacteria?
apparently so. Currently we're dealing with a very bad problem in terms of drug resistance. Most strains of bacteria have become resistant to at least one class of antibiotics. It started with the penicillins, when bacteria started to express the ability to release beta lactamase to cleave the beta lactam ring in the molecules, thus inactivating the drug. Then we moved on to MRSA, which resists methicillin, one of the stronger varietals of penicillin. Now we have VRSA, Vancomycin Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus, and MDR - TB, or Multi-drug resistant TB. The worst yet was XDR - TB, as recently discovered in these parts, which was resistant to everything except high doses of Linezolid, and the high doses needed were a harbringer of resistance even to that. tl;dr - we're screwed unless we discover some new drugs and that speedily.
We need to abandon antibiotics and just start pouring cash into bacteriophage research. Literally there is no stopping it at this point, we're living at a point in time now where antibiotically resistant bacteria is a very real problem for a lot of people who are going to hospital and shit.
It begins
actually the united states would be really safe in the event of a viral outbreak!
This happens to be a bacteria.
Is this something to worry about?

Better not get out of hand and start killing beneficial prokaryotes.
Come on, science. You can't just let us down like this! There has to be an alternative.
Come on, science. You can't just let us down like this! There has to be an alternative.
As others have said, bacteriophage therapy seems to be the most promising. Basically that involves taking viruses that target bacteria and using them to kill infectious bacteria.
I'm not too worried about this. Medical science always finds a way. Even if this, or something similar, fucks me up, I know that the next generation will see new technology that will eliminate what killed me. I may die, but humanity will live on.
