WICHITA, Kans. - A Boeing jet is sitting on the runway at Wichita's Jabara Airport - and may be stuck there for awhile.

Several people tell KAKE News the Dreamlifter is too large for the Jabara runway. It also may be too big for takeoff from Jabara's 6,100-foot runway.
Source I live only 5-7 minutes away from where it's sitting. I've seen this plane up close before, and it's absolutely massive (it transports fuselages of other large jets) and it's basically stuck there right now v:v:v
Rocket assisted takeoff?
Would suck if they end up disassembling it.
So apparently it's one of these [img_thumb]https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/2/2c/Boeing_747-400LCF_Dreamlifter.jpg/800px-Boeing_747-400LCF_Dreamlifter.jpg[/img_thumb]

I'm sure this has happened before, I even had to check the articles date. Edit - not quite. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2176884/Peter-O-Knight-Airport-Watch-incredible-moment-pilot-accidentally-lands-huge-Air-Force-jet-tiny-island-airport.html
It's mindblowing knowing how much money boeing wastes yearly on accidents and mistakes. edit: i'm not sure why I'm being rated dumb.... I actually do know how much they wasted between 2011-2012, and I assume it's a similar number every year. I worked with their 3PL provider, and had access to their computer system in that job.
That must br embarrassing for the pilot. [editline]21st November 2013[/editline]
I'm sure this has happened before, I even had to check the articles date.
An Air Force C-17 did it not that long ago.
They sent a tug, it broke down :v:
So uh, how the fuck are they going to get it out now?

Enough fuel for travel to suitable runway, wait for a strong headwind with minimal crew. That should do it. Edit:
"But a spokeswoman for the airport authority, Valerie Wise, cited favorable weather Thursday and the fact that much of the fuel had been used in the flight from JFK -- which lightened the weight of the plane -- for the conclusion that it was safe to take off on the shorter runway. "The engineers have been running calculations all night," she said." disassemble plane sell parts to build bigger runway wait
WICHITA, Kans. - 7:00 a.m. UPDATE: A tug from Boeing has successfully turned around a giant cargo plane, and it's now scheduled for takeoff from Jabara Airport at 12:00 noon. The Atlas Air Dreamlifter 747 was in very tight quarters, as the Jabara runway is only 100 feet wide. Airport officials believe the relatively short runway will not be an issue, and cargo still aboard the jet will not be removed. A relief crew is being flown to Wichita from New York, while the original crew likely faces serious questions about what happened.
That must br embarrassing for the pilot. [editline]21st November 2013[/editline] An Air Force C-17 did it not that long ago.
And it successfully took off anyways because it's awesome. It could take off in the dirt if it wanted to.
That must br embarrassing for the pilot.
I imagine it might be a bit frosty between the pilot and an traffic controller right now as well
i guess now it'll be a hotel

Eh just slam a RATO or six on it and it will be airborne in no time.

that is one ugly plane [editline]21st November 2013[/editline] Reminds me of when a military C-17 landed on a small airstrip by accident:
It looks like a whale..

Apparently they did the math and if its loaded with minimal fuel it should be able to take off http://usnews.nbcnews.com/_news/2013/11/21/21559785-giant-boeing-747-freighter-lands-at-wrong-kansas-airport?lite
More than 10 hours after the mixup, an airport official said they had managed to turn around the "Dreamlifter" on the runway and had determined that it could take off on the shorter runway.
This is what airbus is using now, it is called the Beluga:
So uh, how the fuck are they going to get it out now?
Easy, disassemble it and send another, larger plane to carry the parts back to another airport. Repeat until the planes get so large that the wings reach from the airport to the Boeing factory.
