Mike Carey sat quietly by himself in the CBS NFL game-day studio in Manhattan on Monday. As he had for 19 integrity-driven seasons as one of the league’s most highly respected officials, the network’s recently hired rules analyst blended seamlessly into the background, doing what every good official does:
Be unobtrusive and let the stars shine.
So while Phil Simms, Greg Gumbel, James Brown, Lesley Visser, Deion Sanders and more of CBS’s luminaries answered to a cadre of journalists whether they would use the name of Washington’s NFL team on broadcasts, Carey sat still. No one approached. His secret of almost eight years was safe, if for just a few more minutes.
A man of principle. I salute him.
The name that 90% of Native Americans didn't even give a fuck about 10 years ago until all these hyper-sensitive walking vaginas told them they should? Good job guy.

While I kinda agree with you, that's not the way to put it. According to Wikipedia the Redskins have been the Redskins for over 80 years now, that's 80 years of no one giving a shit about the name of an American Football team. I mean in a poll about 80% of people said that they should keep the name.
I mean the team name isn't even meant to be offensive, its a team that choose the nickname of a group of fearsome warriors who fought tooth and nail for centuries against an alien people with better technology and the advantage of bringing smallpox of which they were immune. I mean when I hear "Redskin" I think of an Indian wielding a tomahawk charging into battle, I do not think racism.
Putting it in a better way than Avin, the name has gone over 80 years without trouble, of course there were some people offended, but everyone everywhere is offended by something and if we conformed to stop offending the world would be a very, very bland place. Society has a whole has gotten more and more sensitive, and more and more offended about things that have been around for a long time and no one cared about until recently. The Redskins, for good or for ill, is rooted in several peoples cultural understanding.
Sorry for the text wall but its my honest opinion

Self-identified native Americans. The native American tribes have always denounced the name and I think their opinion is worth more. But I'm glad to see casual racism (and some misogyny because why the hell not) is alive and well.

That's not racism?

okay?
I think there's a fine line for these names. Redskins is predominantly a derogatory term for Native Americans, while something like the Atlanta Braves are acceptable because they're using the general term for Native American warriors.

I want to know whether it's actual native Americans who are offended, or white people being offended for native Americans.

Most native americans don't give a shit. Part of my mom's family still lives on reservations back in Wisconsin and guess what? They don't fucking care about the name. It is an extremely vocal minority of natives and sjw's who even care about this.

Scroll down to "Native Americans and organizations opposed". That's the only part that matters.
meanwhile, the amount of birds buying tickets to atlanta falcons games is still at its all time low of 0, clearly angry at the mockery of their race that is a teams name

I think you need to look up the definition of misogyny and racism bud.
Redskins was never a term about 'skin color' the name came from the fact that they wore red facepaint...
You can stop being offended for other people now.

I find it ironic, reading this, that the name was suppose to be in honor of an Amerindian.

Even if it's a term referring to their face paint, it is still a slur. Just because the word "cracker" refers to the cracking of whips instead of skin colour doesn't make it less of a slur, either.
Also, using "hyper-sensitive walking vagina" as an insult for people who appear to complain too much is insulting towards women in general.
It's funny that you think I'm offended, though. I'm not. I'm just saying that asking self-identified native Americans whether the word redskin is offensive or not, is meaningless because a lot of those people have no claim to the cultural heritage at all. Start listening more to the tribes and organizations. If they think it's racist or offensive, then yeah it probably is.
I wonder if Night Wolf would be offended by this.

Everyone is bitten and itched by something.
The use of the name is by no means derogatory, and it's context if anything is remarking how tough and resisting the Native Americans were to any attempt to forcefully assimilate them. How is that in any way some sort of racist term?
Lol what if there was a team called the "Alabama Niggers" and this was the logo.

People only support this name because its been around for a long time.

That's because the n-word is explicitly a derogatory term towards black people.
That's because the n-word is explicitly a derogatory term towards black people.
It is now, but it was a neutral term for a black person, just a variation of Spanish/Portuguese word of "negro", which is descended from the Latin term "niger", until it was used specifically in the context you speak of to make it a racial slur.
Just like the word vagina came from the latin word for sheath, words have had many different meanings through history, another word to explain this too would be gay. It used to mean happy, now it means homosexual. Language is always going to evolve, but the understanding of why people used these terms should still be understood, which is why I find this Redskin's controversy to be bullshit.

It's true, he picked a terrible example, but I do think it would make people a bit uncomfortable if there was a team called the blackskins or the yellowskins :v:
I mean it's a touchy subject for some people but maybe they could change it to something that'd be related to the name but wouldn't offend? In the end history or not, it's just a name

It's sort of an awful example, using the word "nigger" and lets not sugar coat it is oozing with bias. Whereas "cracker" is a hilarious misnomer, the pejorative likely coming from either slave drivers or it's use upon pack animals.
Being a goodly part Native American myself, sure, it's offensive to some and always has been with the Tribal councils. But, we're making up words left and right, and language isn't close to being a constant.
Another poster referring to the term Braves, it's use in reference to the warrior class was that of fear and gradually evolved into a much greater negative descriptor. But with the current climate of being politically correct, I think it's safe to say that we're no longer arguing about offense. We're just slowly allowing ourselves to self-censor and not in any rational fashion.
At this point we're almost about to start rewriting history books to be more sensitive, when they should be factually relevant and devoid of any bias on either side. That a Referee chooses to avoid a particular batch of games due to the name of it's team speaks of something other than laurels, it speaks of fear.
The moment fear enters into a person's thinking over their job due to what a group of people have arbitrarily decided is something that people are missing out on.

to be fair though I don't think you can say it's been around since 80 years ago with no offense is a legitimate point because people 80 years ago didn't exactly have much of a problem using slurs in general
Can't we just keep our extremely racist tradition as a bunch of clueless white people? Why do people have to oppress us?
This actually isn't true, there is still a debate as to how the English origin of "redskin" came about but the primary theory is that it originally referred to tribes who used red pigments on their skin, then by the 1800's came to encompass most native groups.
okay?
this is the worst comparison lawl
and you're calling people racists
this is the worst comparison lawl

Why is it such a bad comparison? Redskin is a pejorative term for Native Americans and a caricature of Native Americans is used as their logo.
