But it did practice softly landing in a specific place in the ocean. Neither SpaceX nor NASA announced the results of it though so it was assumed that it failed, with the fairing being so intact here though it looks like it could've been successful. It's been plonking around at sea for a year.. what a robust piece of tech. The fact that it's intact to that degree is pretty indicative that the landing was soft; it would have been fragmented otherwise.
