Agreed. Smaller churches like the one in my town goes directly to helping the poor in my town. I've spoken to the people they helped, and from the sound of things they actually help people.
But back in my old town where I used to live, there were a couple churches that refused to tell people where all the money went, and no one ever reported being helped.
I guess reasons vary from time to time.
Tax exempt organizations need as much money as they can get.

My local church runs a soup kitchen and sends large groups of people to war ridden areas to build homes and hospitals for the locals.

That's true. And yes it surprises me that there aren't more people questioning the Catholic church. I'm not just talking about child molestation cases, but the whole system in general. It's basically built on an old Roman power structure meant for military conquest.
