Teenage girl with toilet phobia dies from heart attack after going eight weeks without using loo
A teenager died from a heart attack caused by constipation - after going eight weeks without a bowel movement, an inquest heard.Emily Titterington, 16, had a phobia of using the loo and would frequently withhold her stools for up to two months.
Eventually her bowel grew so large it compressed her chest cavity and caused the displacement of other organs.
The inquest heard how her life could have been saved with appropriate treatment but she had refused to be medically examined.
Home Office pathologist Dr Amanda Jeffery said her symptoms were in keeping with a condition known as "stool withholding", which is more frequent in children.
A post-mortem examination revealed that Emily had a "massive extension of the large bowel".
Asked by Coroner Dr Emma Carlyon to describe the severity of the condition, Dr Jeffery said: "It was like nothing I've ever seen before - it was dramatic."
The inquest in Truro, Cornwall, heard how Emily, who had mild autism, suffered with bowel problems for most of her life but doctors had been unable to pinpoint the cause.
Her GP Dr Alistair James said that, in the period leading up to her death, Emily's mother Geraldine, 59, had battled in vain to persuade her to be medically examined.
Dr James told the coroner that he had prescribed laxatives but had not examined Emily's abdomen.
"Had I done so, we would be having a different conversation," he said. "Her death could have been avoided with the right treatment at the right point."
Emily collapsed at her home in St Austell on February 8, 2013. Paramedics desperately tried to revive her but she was later pronounced dead in hospital.
Paramedic Lee Taylor attended the family's home twice on the night of her death.
On the first occasion he described Emily as "looking pale" and said she had complained of pain between her shoulder blades.
However, she refused to go to hospital and had been reluctant to be examined.
He said she wore a "loose nightie" and he did not notice any abdominal swelling.
Mr Taylor and his colleague, student paramedic Lisa Marie Edwards, were called back just after 4am.
He said: "We were allocated to an emergency at the house we'd just left.
"When we arrived her father James was outside shouting at us to help, saying something had gone badly wrong."
Inside they found Emily's mother leaning over her daughter, who was lying in the doorway of the bathroom.
Mr Taylor said: "As she moved away I could see that her abdomen was grossly extended.
"Her lower ribs had been pushed out further than her pubic bone - I was shocked."
Emily's sister Hannah Herbert, 29, last saw her four weeks prior to her death.
Jesus, what a terrible way to die.
Is this real? I'm pretty sure your bowel will let go regardless of how much you fight it
Her mother told her Emily had not been to the toilet for "six to eight weeks" and this was "routine", the inquest heard.
You call that "routine"? Are you fucking kidding me?!
Died full of shit, R.I.F

It can happen, actually. There was some pic I saw some time ago, about a Japanese girl who died of constipation... at some point, if you just don't go, then you'll end up getting a "poop cork" and past that point, you *really* need medical attention or else, you just won't be able to move that out.
They found her in her apartment, and found shit all over her fingers, and also a spoon... she really tried to handle it herself, but failed.
This is beyond ridiculous, when a phobia interferes with basic biological function its a disorder.
Condolences to her family, but this isn't something that should've been passed off as "routine".
How? I go 2 days and it feels like I'm going to explode. 2 fucking months? How do you even shit out something that big?
I was always afraid of toilets when I was younger (Afraid of them overflowing and shit). I eventually got over it as I got older and understood how toilets worked.
But the feeling you get when you haven't let yourself shit in a while is not one I would wish on anyone.

Sometimes I get those really close calls when I have an hour train ride between toilets and that feels terrible
I can't imagine what it would be like
If something is wrong with your ass in any way, that's a huge red flag.
Why the hell was this not rectified in that 2month window; given the right to informed consent, surely someone could've taken her to an ED.
What a shitty way to go, etc.
Seriously though, constipation is like the worst.
I went 4 days without shitting when on holidays with the flu. I was really worried, another day or two and I would have gone to the doctor.
I think there should be more education painting doctors in a good light, was she just too embarrassed to go?
Why didn't she poop outside? Or on a bucket? Or something... this is sad
Oh man, I remember having nightmares about overflowing toilets as a kid.

Mine was a snake coming up and biting my asshole.

This is why I never used an outhouse, tho' it was more related to wasp nests
That's just horrible...
Also, from what I can piece together I assume that her mild autism wasn't enough to grant the parents the ability to overrule her consent.
Had it been or if she had none at all things would most likely have ended different. (Not saying that the autism was the only problem, although it certainly didn't help her phobia.)
I wonder what the doctors would've done should she had agreed to a operation? Do they empty the bowel with a tube or do they just laxatives?
I'm confused, if you're really that afraid of toilets, you dont HAVE to go in one... just use a bucket, hell just shit on the floor at that point. At least you're still alive.
I'm confused as to why she didn't start vomiting feces after holding it for that long.
Maybe it's only when you're constipated for a really long time.
Was this intentional?
You know I'm anal about my puns.. it's just coincidence that the most concise word was relevant to the topic at hand.

When I was 4-5, I was at my neighbours place, and found a redback spider under the toilet seat lid.
It didn't deter me from toilets, but it sure as hell taught me where the fuck those things will dwell.

i hate the feeling of not being able to poop or pooping too much
i just want to shit normally. this makes me feel all sorts of weirded out

Some people have really weird bowl movement schedules. I'm one of them. I would think after two weeks it would be unbearable and you'd just give way

Yes, i can control my bowel movements, even forget to have them sometimes. All because my parents showed me the movie "It" with tim curry when i was 3-4. scared me off of manholes and toiletseats. i was terrified to go to the restroom until i was 12-13, and still refuse to go into public restrooms now, depending on the place. I would hold it in as long as possible, and now i gain the ability to control it. It's a terrible thing.

Someone call Scyfy channel, we have an F-list superhero movie idea here, complete with origin story.
Some sessions of hypno-theraphy and this wouldn't have been an issue.
Sad way to die!
The worst part is, this basically happened because all of the build-up crushed her other organs. She must have been in agony.
My mom always scared me into pooping when I was little, by explaining if I don't poop for a couple days, I would start pooping from my mouth

I once had the worst case of hot diarrhea that burned off the nerve endings in my anus.
Couldnt feel a thing in there for a month.

It was Dreamcatcher for me, when the guy shits some alien eggs into a toilet then dies, and then they start coming out from there or something. I saw that scene like 10+ years ago and it stuck with me, and completely horrified me. Ever since then, i simply can't sit down on a toilet and have to squat.
