A 14-year-old left unattended for the weekend with a shotgun and ammunition killed one of his friends following a night of unsupervised activity by a trio of Indianola teenagers, Indianola police said Sunday. James David Doyle, a 16-year-old with reported dreams of playing football for Indianola High School this fall and pursuing an eventual career as an attorney, was pronounced dead from a gunshot wound early Sunday morning at 800 W. First Ave, police said. The shooting took place at the home of Allen Nadler, 14, who neighbors said had been left alone since Friday while his father was away on a camping trip. Nadler now faces a first-degree murder charge. “The kids were up all night messing around with the gun and then there were some angry words and the victim was shot,” said Indianola Police Chief Steve Bonnett. The killing was motivated, Bonnett said, but he declined to release specific details: “This wasn’t a case of kids playing with a gun and it accidentally went off.” Both versions apparently were being spread among Indianola High School students Sunday. Doyle’s family, through a spokeswoman, declined to comment. “They don’t really know enough about the facts right now,” said family friend Diane Hoffman. She described James Doyle as a smart student, set to enter his junior year of high school, who was pondering a football tryout this fall. James had an energetic personality and plans for law school, she said. “He was the kind of kid where if you saw him across the room, you wanted to go and talk to him,” she said. Carly Money, 14, and her cousin, 14-year-old Tessa Gottbehuet, described Money’s friend Nadler as “deeply religious” and prone to loud discussions when faced with people who didn’t share his beliefs. Doyle likewise could be argumentative, they said, but the two boys remained close. “They would yell at each other and fight, but then you’d turn around and they’d all be best friends,” Money said. “We heard that they were fighting about religion, but then we also heard it was an accident,” Gottbehuet said. Money said a third teen present in the home, a boy who has not yet been publicly named by police, told Doyle’s mother that the shotgun accidentally went off while Nadler was replacing a dropped shell. According to that version, Doyle was shot in the chest and Nadler dialed 9-1-1 after fetching towels to stop the bleeding. Nicole Tyler, Money’s 24-year-old sister, said Nadler could be loud and obnoxious at times, but never violent. “He’s not a bad kid,” she said. “He’s really not. Ö (But) a child at that age isn’t going to make the best decisions.” Other neighbors described Nadler and his unnamed friends’ frequent horseplay with fireworks, BB guns and small cups of gasoline. Nobody seemed to view any of the activity as anything but typical teen antics. “Was he a bad kid? I don’t think so,” neighbor Terry Garrett, 47, said of Nadler. “He had some bad kids around him.” Hoffman said Doyle’s family had given few specifics but had been told the killing was not accidental. “We’re all also wondering why this kid had access to a gun,” Hoffman said. “There’s the question that we can’t answer.”
Source: http://blogs.desmoinesregister.com/dmr/index.php/2010/06/27/indianola-police-charge-16-year-old-with-murder/ Seriously, this is kinda messed up. Religion is not worth losing a life over.
Gunsafes need to be mandatory in households with children.
Thou shalt not kill
Thou shalt not kill
That doesn't apply if they're heathens. :saddowns:
Yeah, I find it weird that some people of religion think they have the right to use violence in the name of _______.
inb4 shitstorm
I can't even think of an emoticon to use to describe my feelings towards this.
Holy shit. That's stupid.
Why am I not surprised, anyway?
The person who pulled the trigger is probably going to be horribly depressed the rest of his life even if he gets out of prison. Hivemind.
Hey when you can't come up with a good counter argument for your belief a shotgun to the other guys face is just as good
The bible says that the bible is right so it must be right! The bible says to love christ! The bible says to yadayadaya The bible says not to kill- Shit I guess I'll get by without this one.
Why the fuck
Jesus did it
Why the fuck
Mental sickness! I don't know why else.
Not really religion that's to blame, that kid is fucked in the head if he gets pissed like this for no reason. He would have killed someone at some point anyway.
he has been taught that he most be right no matter what, which is something some poeple get from religion
James David Doyle, a 16-year-old with reported dreams of playing football for Indianola High School this fall and pursuing an eventual career as an attorney
Made me rage
all I can say is... "wow"
Blasted kids, need to learn how to party like men.
What a retarded kid.
guys he didnt kill him god smiteded the evil athiest down!!!!!!!!!!
I know he was the killer, but I feel bad for the kid who shot. He got heated up and fired, and afterward he must have realized he had killed his best friend. That isn't something you can live with. But then I also feel bad for the family of the kid who got shot, for obvious reasons. I hate these stories, it's just seeing more people end up with a tormenting life.
The bible says that the bible is right so it must be right! The bible says to love christ! The bible says to yadayadaya The bible says not to kill- Shit I guess I'll get by without this one.
The bible says to kneel down on your knees and lean forward in front of Christ. But in all seriousness, this is pretty messed up.
You're still fucked in the head if you're going to kill someone cause of it.
He isn't crazy he is just "very religious" and can't exept information that challenges his views
You're all wrong, we must blame the VIOLENT VIDEO GAMES.
He isn't crazy he is just "very religious" and can't exept information that challenges his views
You think that religion is the only factor in this? I've argued with my best friend before, it turned violent but we made up afterward, we ended up feeling terrible but we got over it. This kid is going to have to live the rest of his life knowing that he killed a person who was very close to him, that he cant make up for it, its just an awful situation, he got caught up in the moment and he slipped.
Pretty typical of facepunch to start blaming religion for this. Some of you are just as bad as the parents who demonize video games for reputedly causing the same thing.
You're even more wrong, we must blame the RELIGIOUSLY BIASED ULTRAVIOLENT CYBER-HELL GAMES. And then some COMPLETE ASSHOLES post above me and ruin my post GODDAMN IT
Gunsafes need to be mandatory in households with children.
Pretty sure here in Canada gun safes are mandatory, guess it's safer here
Pretty sure here in Canada gun safes are mandatory, guess it's safer here
Everything is safer in Canada.
