Good job, you can quote what he said.
I want to see him do an extra level with the ultra mod installed :v:

this game looks absolutely retarded the hitbox doesnt even make any kind of sense among pretty much everything else
this game looks absolutely retarded the hitbox doesnt even make any kind of sense among pretty much everything else
I think the hitbox is just the head (The center of it) but I never really understood it either.
this game looks absolutely retarded the hitbox doesnt even make any kind of sense among pretty much everything else
the hitbox is only a part of the sprite just like in Jamestown but this game truly looks like some fake difficulty bullshit
I think the hitbox is just the head (The center of it) but I never really understood it either.
The hitbox on a lot of games like this are at the center. Usually there's a focus mode that slows down movement and shows the hitbox but he never used it.

The hitbox is the ribbon, it's visible when you hold shift. It appears that Cr1tikal doesn't know you can focus.

A rule in Touhou is that any hitbox is always smaller than it looks. Touhou is hard, but not as hard as it looks for that reason.

"This game is retarded because I don't know anything about the genre and don't look into shit before posting"
In the above picture, if you see that little red dot in the middle of the character, that's the hitbox.
so why do anime girls hover around blasting each other with lasers and projectiles anyway
In the above picture, if you see that little red dot in the middle of the character, that's the hitbox.
And it's actually a tiny bit smaller, since the visualization of the hitboxes, for both projectiles and player, are a few pixels bigger than the actual hitbox, which means you can graze the bullets, which allows you to make it more challenging to see how close you can get to projectiles, possibly finding a better way to evade, and increasing your score due to the closer you are=the more points you get.

because videogames
because anime
because japan
pick one
"This game is retarded because I don't know anything about the genre and don't look into shit before posting"
no, you're wrong??
"this game looks retarded because the game appears to be designed really poorly"
being a different genre isn't an excuse for bad game design, sorry I insulted your anime girl laser party or whatever???
Actually, the reason the hitbox is like that is because they are floating vertically in the air with all the bullets on the same plane as your head. The body is just visuals.
it certainly doesn't look like that, looks like she's in the superman pose flying flat. maybe this is bad art conveyance because they can't really make it obvious that's what's going on, which should be the case if the whole body isn't the hitbox.
literally every good game ever has the hitbox as the whole character because it makes sense
or at least it was obvious or intuitive reasons for there to be a "sweet spot"

Having the whole character be the hitbox would severely limit the buttfuck crazy shit these games do which appropriately gives them the name "bullet hell"
The art has always been bad, because this is ZUN we're talking about.
The hitbox doesn't make sense, who gives a shit.
You're flying a chick through the air dodging millions of bullets shooting millions of bullets at other girls.
Not even 3 minutes in and he's cracking me up with "Little red riding hood firing on all cylinders" :v:

Big hitboxes suck way more than small hitboxes. If the whole character was able to get hit, you'd get a lot of those situations where you feel like "Wtf that didn't hit me!" whereas this at least gives you a chance to get the opposite feeling.
And you get to know exactly where your hitbox is as soon as you hit shift, unless you're playing the games before Touhou 7. It's just a part of the game that you have to learn what the hitboxes are like.
I mean I can agree with you that it's bullshit to start off with, especially in Touhou 6. There's no way to tell where it is or how big it is other than people telling you "look for the ribbon on her back", but in the games after that it's really easy. When you press shift you also get this graphic around the character that makes her appear like a perfect sphere (see above image), and the actual hitbox is clearly visible.

"Games have to make sense".
If you'd played the game for 10 seconds you'd understand the way the hitbox works, it's not bad conveyance.
Maybe I'm weird, but I don't see the fun of a game were the whole point of it is just to fill the screen with projectiles. Other than the high amount of bullets, there doesn't seem to be much at all to the game.
That and anime girls flying around in space shooting eachother, uh pass.

Actually, the player hitbox is the one hitbox in the games that actually does make sense. Press shift to view it, graze bullets to test it, it takes about 5 minutes to become totally comfortable with your hitbox. The rest of the character is simply there because it'd be meaningless if all the characters had to be tiny white hovering balls.
If you want to complain about shitty hitboxes, that's fine, just don't complain about the player hitbox.

Now these motherfuckers (the big one close to the player), however, are made of suck. See how it has a very clear and distinct white border? Yeah, that one isn't the border. Instead, it's the violet shit inside it that actually hurts you. But the violet shit doesn't have any clear border to it at all, so you have absolutely no clue how close you can actually go to it. I've been playing Touhou for fuck knows how long and I still can't figure these fuckers out.
There's also other examples of this. Most of them don't bother me personally, but there are bullets shaped as knives that don't make sense, the newer games have glowing bullets that phase into each other, Touhou 11 has gigantic nuclear suns with similarly incomprehensible borders.
But fuck, it's really not hard to know where your own hitbox is once you've played the game for 5 minutes.
here's an introduction to touhouism

Touhou games have some of the biggest and most dedicated followings in the gaming industry. Especially the music.
Talk to a touhou fanatic and the depth of the stories and actual shit that happens behind the bullet hell curtain is amazing.
The bullets are there for hardcore people. You can play on Easy or Normal which will definitely give you a good time.

Even if you hate the games, you have to admit. The music is incredibly good.

The originals are really bland, but the melodies catch on really well, and the arranges are what I love most.

You don't need to have a PhD in shit to know it's shit.
