I could never imagine myself in such a situation.
War is hell but damn, guns are cool.
Holy shit. Those A-10s sound horrifying. I would shit my pants if I was on the receiving end of those.

You'd be dead before you hear the gun actually fire. Pretty cool how everything blows up and only after that you hear the vulcan farting
Jesus that A-10 got right on top of them. Pilot must be really fucking good.

The GAU-8 is only on the A-10.
VVVVRRRT! Terrifying noise.
Also, here's some context:
A MK-48 gunner is engaged in an intense firefight with 10-15 insurgents 50-100 meters away in Afghanistan. An A-10 Thunderbolt is called in to engage with its 30mm cannon on the enemy positions striking several times. The date and location of this event cannot be released.
"This is the kind of gun they used to put planes on. It wasn't a case of 'Oh, we got this jet fighter, it kinda needs something besides missiles and bombs and shit, let's strap this thing on'. NO. It was a case of a guy making a gun SO awesome, that he just stepped back, and said, "This shit needs to fly'. And everyone else is like, 'You can't make a gun fly!'. And the first guy is all like, 'Fuck you, yes I can. I will strap a plane to this gun.' And everyone's like, 'You mean strap the gun to a plane?' And the first guy is like, 'No, man. I am strapping the plane to the gun. The plane is an accessory.' And then everyone's minds were blown. Like, there was some serious mind blowing going on there. Ears were bleeding. Synapses just went and committed suicide because it was so awesome."
Comes to mind every time I see the Gau-8.

The A-10 is literally built around the GAU-8 "Avenger". The vulcans are used on fighter aircraft like F-14s. Kinda silly how they'll use thousands of 30mm spent uranium anti-tank rounds on infantry, but hey, whatever gets the job done right?
A-10's are awesome.

I heard they stopped using the spent uranium rounds due to soldiers getting radiation poisoning when they went up to the site where the A-10's were firing at.
Fucking hajis.

Oh it isn't silly at all.
You see there are two reasons the US still loves putting depleted uranium in its armaments.
The first is that it is cheap.
The second is that DU is fucking dangerous as hell.
You see they aren't just armor piercing rounds. They are armor piercing INCENDIARY rounds. Yes. For a variety of reasons, this is traditionally impossible, but DU has some fairly unique properties. When it strikes a hard surface, it breaks into self sharpening shards that tear through armor like butter. But it also produces a fine dust that immediately ignites when exposed to oxygen.
So on open terrain, you have bullets that strike the ground and produce a burning dust in the immediate area in addition to traditional shrapnel.
If you hit an armored vehicle, unlike a tungsten round, you don't just punch a hole in the vehicle. You punch a hole and the vacuum in wake of the shot sucks all the burning dust into the armored vehicle. Now you have a magazine, fuel reserve, or crew compartment full of fire. It is not happy times inside the vehicle.
DU is a large part of why the avenger cannon is so ridiculously powerful.
Correct me if I'm wrong depleted uranium poisons the farm land its being shot into in that clip?
Needs slight of hand, reloads way too slowly.

Depleted Uranium sounds overpowered as fuck.

But mostly because they fire about a million giant 30mm rounds a second.

That's not entirely true. The A-10 was built because the US was in need of a CAS plane.
On the prototypes there was indeed a Vulcan installed which was replaced by the GAU-8 in the final iterations, so no it wasn't really a case of "we build a jet around this beautiful gun".
I thought they stopped loading DU rounds and switched to only the HEI rounds.
The sound of a firing a-10 is just beautifully scary.

I hear they nerf it in the next update. :v:
I will never tire of the sound of the GAU-8. It's up there with Nebelwerfers and Stuka sirens as the most intimidating sound used in warfare.
They should put Stuka sirens on A10s.
