The European Commission is proposing that the EU launch a Mediterranean-wide search and rescue mission to intercept migrant boats.
The move by Home Affairs Commissioner Cecilia Malmstroem was prompted by the Lampedusa migrant boat tragedy, which killed more than 230 people.
She will present the plan to EU ministers in Luxembourg on Tuesday.
Spanish fighter jet patrol the coasts here in Lanzarote regularly searching for them, we had a ferry capsize a couple years killing a good 20 of em. You need a one eye'd, one legged weather worn sea dog of a capt'n for navigating when it's rough out ;)
Edit: We're just off the coast of morocco so I'd say we see the majority of these things coming in.
What does the EU get out of it?

Alive immigrants instead of dead immigrants.
Alive immigrants instead of dead immigrants.
I'm sorry! I can't make a pun because I feel bad about it. :(
I hope no more boats sink. :(

A chance to deport them before they even arrive, so they don't have to bother with human rights and such.

Save the lives of people that could've died and then safely return them to their countries.
You know how the EU is all about human right and well-being and all that.
