The Philadelphia 76ers will become the first North American professional sports team to own an esports team.
The team will announce Monday that it has acquired long-time franchise Dignitas and upstart Apex, which offers a guaranteed spot in the highly coveted League of Legends Championship Series, and operate under the Dignitas name.
Terms were not disclosed, but more established esports team brands have been offered in the marketplace at valuations between $5 million and $15 million. WME-IMG represented Dignitas in the transaction. The acquisitions come about a year after a presentation on the growth of esports was made at the NBA Board of Governors meeting.
76ers CEO Scott O'Neil said, "We were smart enough to know what we didn't know," so O'Neil brought on Greg Richardson, an executive who has had a career in consumer tech and video gaming and will oversee the project for the team.
I don't think owning two eSports teams are part of the "process" for the 76ers.
Also I find it interesting how most of the professional sports interest in eSports comes from the NBA, like Rick Fox, Shaq, and now the 76ers.
Trust the Process
I'm glad that now I have a team to root for. Before this I just supported the team with the coolest name but now that my city has a team of their own I can fully back a team.
Last I remember an org can't own 2 teams in the LCS right? I dunno how this works out
I hope they weren't basing this off of the CS:GO Dignitas team, after like all of the members left ship.

They don't. Apex has the spot, Dignitas fell out of the LCS. Dig is a well known name, but they didn't make it back into the LCS after Summer split. Apex is a relatively unknown team, but they have the LCS spot the 76ers want.

I'm pretty sure one team is CS, one's LoL?

Oh alright, I only follow CS, so I was confused regarding that.

Yeah I knew dig was relegated this season (rip) but I didn't know how that'd work going into the next season
Maybe Dignitas can pick up a Dota 2 team? Though increasingly in Dota organisations are being player run as they don't provide enough to top players justify existing at the moment.

As of now all Dota 2 teams are locked in for the Fall/Winter season. They can acquire a team but they can't change any rosters right now.

The Roster lock is more in place so teams cant drop/add players right before a major tournament and to actually have some structure in the Dota scene. But the thing is teams can still drop/add players its just this forfeits their invites to those major tournaments and they will have to go through open qualifiers. Which this last International two big name teams did this with really no problems.
a good distraction from their awful basketball team

Kudos to the Philly pans that kept on turning up to the games. Hopefully they're able to develop the players they have this year.
