In light of continuing threats from North Korea towards the United States, Guam and South Korea, Secretary of Defense Jim Mattis said Monday that if North Korea did fire a missile at the U.S. that, “it’s game on.” Fox News reported.
Fox also reported, ‘Speaking to reporters, Mattis added that the U.S. military would “take out” any North Korean missile it detects is heading for American soil, including Guam, a U.S. territory. Asked how the U.S. would respond, Mattis initially declined to say. When pressed, he said that if U.S. radars and other detection and tracking systems determine that a missile was going to fall into the sea, short of Guam, then the matter would be taken to President Donald Trump for a decision on how to respond.’
Isn't that just reassuring?
Welp, here's to hoping he can handle this in a remotely level headed manner should they only aim the missiles for the nearby waters as they've said before. Here's also to hoping that NK can actually aim their missiles precisely enough to not hit too close to Guam.
Kim said he would “watch a little more” Washington’s behaviour, but he will make an “important” decision if the US continues its "extremely dangerous reckless actions".

North Korea’s has today repeated previous assertions that its plan was to fire missiles to land in the ocean "near" Guam, not at Guam itself. The US has stated this would be an unacceptable provocation./QUOTE]
Please let Kim Jung Un be the adult in the room and just "assess" the situation instead of pushing their luck. :worried:
I mean how else are we to react? Just let them do it? Let them flail their weapons on our soil and get away with it?

I mean, it wouldn't be the worst possible decision to start conflict over this - if the missile came really close this time, closer than before, then I guess it would be understandable to see it as an attempted attack.
Besides if it goes off it could also create a tsunami, would it not?
If they really did get those missile engines from Ukraine it makes their threats of shooting an ICBM much more scary, IMO.

Well, I'd rather not risk nuclear war with Trump in charge, all because Trump couldn't shut his mouth on Twitter and stop poking the beehive.
North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has decided not to launch a threatened missile attack on Guam, Pyongyang’s state media reported on Tuesday, but warned that he could change his mind "if the Yankees persist in their extremely dangerous reckless actions."
There might just be a God after all.
I hope Kim realizes that over half the population of the United States HATES Trump too.

Haha yeah we just really like, hate that specific patch of water. Guam being right next to it is just a silly coincidence! No harm no foul, just let the missile keep flying and we won't steer it at the island ok
Jesus I can't believe we're stuck between the asshole child who thinks everything is his and the kid that spends the entire road trip going "I'm not touching youuuuuuuu"
Is it too much to add that theyre playing with fistful of hand grenades in the analogy because they're ready to take the whole bus down

Well their original plan was to hit Guam directly on mainland, so as far as I was concerned, their next plan to hit the waters off of Guam was a subtle attempt at deescalation that was probably lost on Trump.
I'm not going to downplay the importance in considering that NK is now a valid nuclear threat, but some of these recent events were subtly being deescalated.

How about hoping they fuck off doing missile testing?
This is like hoping the burglar breaking into the house next door doesn't break into yours while you are just standing there doing nothing.

Got any other sources that aren't WSJ or locked behind a paywall?
I'm not seeing any other news articles about it, besides WSJ.
The BBC mentions he only been "briefed" about it. Nothing about backing off.

god ain't here, just mad dog
god ain't here, just mad dog
but if you rearrange 'mad dog' and add a comma you get 'dam, god'
god ain't here, just mad dog
Dog spelled backwards is God, and Mad Dog spelled backwards is "God Dam" so close enough :v:
For real though, glad to hear things are seemingly deescalating.
There never was any credence to the threats. Kim is not an idiot. He loses his one and only advantage by striking first.
I hope no one is suprised next week when they suddenly ramp up their threats or conduct another test. It's that time of year.

So basically "We're gonna blow up Guam! We're gonna blow up Guam! We're!... not gonna blow up Gaum... but, uhm, we got our eye on you"?
Only way there's a war going down is if the U.S. tries to remove the nuclear weapons North Korea currently has.
The United States should call a UNSC meeting and discuss what would and wouldn't constitute an act of war, in order to keep sure that China or Russia wouldn't intervene on North Korea's side should we retaliate.

Why shouldn't they be testing nukes? They're not going to use them without being provoked, and most world superpowers have nuclear stockpiles.
North Korea's a shit country with a tyrannical dictatorship, but it's not maniacally crazy like people seem to think. They're not going to launch missiles directly at other countries out if the blue, them backing out of the Guam strike proved that.
[editline]15th August 2017[/editline]
If North Korea launches a missile at the US or one of its territories, it'll be our fault for prodding it, placing countless sanctions on it, and threatening it. A cornered dog is going to bite back eventually.
