Washington (CNN)Barack Obama used his departing words as President Wednesday to offer an assured -- if not entirely optimistic -- outlook for a country governed by Donald Trump.
"At my core I think we're going to be OK," Obama said as he concluded his final news conference at the White House. "We just have to fight for it, work for it, and not take it for granted."
Thanks Obama
Thanks Obama
I seriously don't think anything else can be said that could top this. He gave us a pretty good 8 years.
Going from Obama to Trump is just insane. Just watch his final news conference. Long, accurate, well thought out answers based on years of study, diplomacy and tact.
Talk about opposite sides of the spectrum. Betting on total trump meltdown within a year when he's faced with tough questions.

War is gonna start over a tweet.
We're not just going to be okay, we're going to be great.
Make America OK Again
This is the song that started playing in my head when i saw the title

gonna miss ya obama
Overall good guy, not too keen on his presidency but I hope he does well with the rest of his life--and stays out of the political theatre. Thirty-odd years of a $203,700 pension better be enough of a bribe to keep his mouth shut.
Gonna miss obama optimistic

I hope he does the opposite. There's a reason that former US Presidents are still referred to as Mr. President even after their terms have expired - and that's because they're still expected to serve as leaders for our country. The United States is going through a very rough patch in its history in every single aspect, for our most recent commander in chief to fade away and "keep his mouth shut" would be an insult and a disservice.
I seriously don't think anything else can be said that could top this. He gave us a pretty good 8 years.
One last drone strike with massive collateral damage for old times?
It was a pretty boring presidency, but god this man just oozes charisma. Gonna miss him.
What is this "rough patch" the US are going through?
Are you serious?

The term is a mark of respect, not of duty. There's a reason why we only have one acting President at a time, too. To have two diametrically opposed politicians abusing equally-strong influence at the same time could create disaster for our republic. Obama has already shown he has the capability to incite lawlessness by giving the rubber stamp to groups like BLM with a propensity for violence. For once, I think he would do some good by just staying quiet for a while.
Yup. America seems to be doing pretty well so far, it seems like the only "threat" is a man you were told not to like is going to be sworn into office shortly
You seem to have a little bit of tunnel vision if you haven't looked at the various plans and policies that the Republican majority government has announced before the man is even sworn into office.
There is more to a government than one man becoming president.
You seem to have remarkable tunnel vision and ability to dismiss any of the looming problems and plans we've already seen be announced from Trump's administration, and what a Republican-controlled government means.
America "isn't doing well so far" and the man isn't even in office yet.
Disregard Cructo. This is the guy who sent me this in a PM when I cornered him in an argument on SH.

Never once have I seen him make a well thought out or intelligent argument, never once have I seen him back up his outlandish claims with proof, and never once has he done anything but arbitrarily dismiss, without cause, evidence that proves him wrong. When I call him out on his intellectual dishonesty, he always, without exception, slinks away with his tail between his legs. This is a poster I think we can all safely ignore, because he has never contributed a thing to any discussion he's been a part of, especially on the subject of his god, Trump.

I doubt Obama will have as much influence as Trump considering he no longer has command over the entire country. Cultural influence? Maybe, but not overall. Obama has no obligation to keep his mouth shut whatsoever. At the very least I'd expect him to have the tact and ability not to incite any issues, but his own criticisms and opinions would be entirely welcome IMO.
Also, I'd love to see where Obama "incited lawlessness". That's a pretty bold claim and I haven't seen anything to back it up.

Well maybe the second amendment people can do something about it, I don't know.
Yup. America seems to be doing pretty well so far, it seems like the only "threat" is a man you were told not to like is going to be sworn into office shortly
First of all, I was not "told not to like" Trump. I drew my own conclusions on him from the facts. Speaking of facts, lets observe the current socio-political and economic state of the union.
We still haven't recovered fully from the crippling recession of 2008, and the economy only looks to worsen under Trump who has been almost universally condemned by economists.
Racial tensions are at a blistering high, with frustrations over systemic inequality in this country finally starting to boil over. Trump offers no solution to these issues and fails to even acknowledge that they exist.
Unfounded fears on ideological scapegoats is running wild, and the president elect seems entirely content on capitalizing on those fears.
LGBT rights remain in an unacceptable state. Marriage equality was a start but it's simply not enough. Considering that Trump and his administration support the FADA, I'm not optimistic on how they're going to handle our civil rights.
Climate change and the destruction of our environment is reaching a critical point of no return. Trump and his administration are climate change skeptics. The anti-intellectualist tendencies of our country are increasingly apparent and pose a serious issue in a society where fake news runs rampant (dont get me started on how Trump treats the press and media) and education is inaccessible for an increasing portion of americans.
I could go on and on with this stuff but this should be enough to make you maybe consider that our country and the world at large is pretty deeply flawed on a number of fronts.

I don't believe that he meant a leader as in a political or military role. Former presidents are social leaders. They are public figures with a huge amount of civilian support behind them, and have had eight years in the public eye to attain that support. They are influential even though they hold no official position of significance any longer.

I've had him on ignore for several months now, and let me tell you, it's much nicer to not have to see blithe half replies that you know will never get backed up because Cructo really is here just to stir shit and make people mad.
It's best to just ignore an actual attention troll.

I never actually put anyone on my ignore list. Besides, when I see him shitposting, I enjoy calling him out on the off chance he'll actually show integrity for once, and reminding people of who they're dealing with when he inevitably doesn't.

so much for having a plurality of opinions eh
To be fair he said "I think we are going to be ok" which has a slightly different tone
Alright, I apologize for assuming you were like most other anti-Trumpers or anti-whoever. However, most of those points are really based on speculation. I agree with you on the climate change, which I hope people will prevent him from fucking it up
First of all, excellent job citing infowars.
Second of all, holy fuck dude, I know you said "there is no direct link" but thats not even the half of it, considering that your link that claims that "BLM advocates for violence" comes from the Philandro Castle case in July of 2016 when Obama defending BLM was in late 2015. You cant even get your lazy cause and effect chain in the right chronological order.
Third of all, I dont see any calls for violence from Obama. What he said on the matter is entirely reasonable and 100% true.
The president said Black Lives Matter activists are focusing on problems that exist only in black communities, such as routine police brutality, calling it a “legitimate issue that we’ve got to address.”
“The African-American community is not just making this up,” Obama said during a forum on criminal justice reform hosted by The Marshall Project. “It is real, and there is a history behind it and we have to take it seriously.”
Obama pointed out that many critics were quick to blame the Black Lives Matter movement for fomenting anti-police sentiment. But he said it’s true purpose is to raise concerns about issues related to practices like stop-and-frisk and the use of excessive force.
"I think everybody understands ‘all lives matter,’ ” the president said. “Everybody wants strong, effective law enforcement, everybody wants their kids to be safe when they’re walking to school, nobody wants to see police officers, who are doing their job fairly, hurt.”
Obama's comments came amid a push by the White House and bipartisan members of Congress to overhaul the nation’s criminal justice system. Obama said he is looking at ways to make the system “smart, just, effective and fair.”
But he said it would be unfair to pin the problem on the police, saying the country needs to do more to boost educational and economic opportunities in communities of color.
“If we as a society are willing to tolerate” disadvantaged communities, then express surprise about police tensions, “then we’re passing the buck,” Obama said.
These are very presidential and professional remarks. What would you prefer him to do instead? Universally condemn all of BLM, especially when their concerns were entirely grounded and based in reality at the time of his """"""endorsement""""""? It was more of an acknowledgement of their concerns than him inciting violence at any rate. Obama would be the last president to "give the rubber stamp" to a riot or a hate group (of which BLM is neither).

I am saving this post.
If violence ever breaks out on Trumps side, we have speeches of him literally condoning it, will you even remotely feel the desire to point things like this out?
