• [Poll][Rant] The "rules" of the forums.

Be for I start, If this is in the wrong area please feel free to move it. I'm not sure where this would go. Now to business: I was baned for “So very late, dumb bump.” yet I didn't know this was against the rules, they don't have a proper rules set up (see: http://facepunch.com/fp_rules.php ) Couldn't this just be a warning or something similar, or even be listed on the rules. There is no way for a person who is knew to the forums (Like me) that should know that. Even though, why ban for this even a 24 hr ban? Why because you want repeat topics? You want people to spam about it? Why does this generate such a big ERROR for Ninja101? (see: http://facepunch.com/member.php?u=191335 ) Who later after that Baned someone for “Wrong section”, why not just move it for them? Why does he have to ban or others, why not just say "Hey, don't post in old topics! Please, we want dupe threads!" Why not? Maybe he didn't notice I'm new, (although I've been registered for 720~ days) and just let me off with a warning? Why doesn't some one list the rules in that page or a sticky? The sticky can be changed to have a new ban reasons when they find one. The mods need to step up a little, sure they are good the way they are keeping “Hinting warez” and “huh” from happening (see: Gran PC's ban history) So, mod's that read this, your doing a good job, just please, make the rules more obvious to newbies, or warn them via PM. Sure ban with out question for "warz" and other bad stuff, but stuff like "Advertising" and "wrong section" pop a warning about the adverts, then ban if they do it again. As for the wrong sections over and over, just... Think, warn them, then ban. Use the Stoplight system. Stop Them or post a warning linger on them and wait for them to do something ignite if they go and do it again. hit them with a ban if they do Terminate (ban for longer) the user for repeated offences. Now that you read that, don't be ban me because I don't know the right section, tell me what it needs to go in, and then if I do it again feel free to ban me, I've never posted a thread except 1 other on this forum. Thanks.
Most rules are common sense and it would therefore be impossible to list all the things you could to to get yourself banned. This page is not acting as a complete list of bannable offenses - it instead aims to clear up some confusion about those rules that may not be obvious.
Also, a ban is a warning. If you get banned for something, just don't do it again. If you don't continually do stuff you've been banned for, don't do anything obviously bad that's gonna get you permabanned immediately, and apologize and explain yourself in the refugee camp if you do get banned for something you didn't know was against the rules, you'll be fine.
Most rules are just common sense.
Basically, Facepunch does things a little differently than a lot of forums. The rules are pretty loose, but generally they just don't want too much bullshit clogging up the forums. If you've done something even mildly stupid, the mods might give you a small ban just to teach you a lesson; like it or not, that's how it works, and IMHO it keeps the forums more readable, so I'm all for it.
Also, a ban is a warning. ...
Ok, is there not a warning system? Or anything like that?
Ok, is there not a warning system? Or anything like that?
Not really, 24 hour bans serve as warnings
Ok, is there not a warning system? Or anything like that?
No. We may occasionally send a PM to someone rather than banning them but I don't think it's especially common. More likely a user will just be banned and if they apologize in the RC and are new to the forums, the ban will be removed or reduced immediately.
Not really, 24 hour bans serve as warnings
Any ban that isn't permanent is a warning to change whatever it is you're doing wrong.
Not really, 24 hour bans serve as warnings
Might want to work on that... But I guess that could work to an extent. But really, a 24 hr ban for not knowing a rule that isn't listed?
Might want to work on that... But I guess that could work to an extent.
The thread you posted in was more than a year old. Common sense should tell you that you shouldn't bump a thread that old, and maybe just wait for a new one to arise. If no one else posts about that problem, then don't worry about it. Edit: I still don't understand how people even find these threads. It almost makes me think that you went out of your way to find this problem the person had and you posted a fix for it, even though it's a year old. Not to mention people already explained how to fix the problem. Your ban seems right.
Might want to work on that... But I guess that could work to an extent. But really, a 24 hr ban for not knowing a rule that isn't listed?
Learn from the bans on the event log, ask a moderator about something you're unsure of, or just simply lurk before you post. That rules aren't that hard to follow, take some effort and learn how to post here.
Who later after that Baned someone for “Wrong section”, why not just move it for them?
If they won't take all of 10 seconds to make sure they're posting in the right section (or even ask a moderator) and instead force us to clean up after them we're going to ban them to make sure they don't do it again. We don't want people being lazy.

Oh and Lebowski, why don't you post your thoughts? Instead of clicking "dumb" and "disagree"?
Only occasionally? Oh and Lebowski, why don't you post your thoughts? Instead of clicking "dumb" and "disagree"?
I do not have anything useful to contribute to this conversation. That is all.

Now That I know its against the rules to post in old topics I guess its time to Create a new dupe topic every time if there is no fix, or just read the other pages of the topic which have no fix on them.
The way i see it is that this isn't a democracy, hell this isn't even a republic, we just get together, pretend to be intellectuals and post pictures of cats doing funny things. The only real rule is to not be a bell end and an idiot. Simply put: don't piss people off and you won't get banned. If you got banned you were an idiot and pissed people off. So, before you post, think reeeeeal hard "Will people like this post?".

If there's already a thread for a problem you have and it was not solved, you can bump it to avoid making a new thread. But answering someone's unanswered problem from forever ago... what are the chances they will see that?

And it was a fix for an error I'm pretty sure, so the OP would be happy that it was fixed, I've never knew not to try to help people. Hum....
I've never gotten one of those what are these magical private messages containing warnings
I give them out very occasionally, like if someone is brand new and makes a minor mistake that might get them banned if they'd been around longer, or if someone does something like "Not sure if this is warez or not, but I'll post it anyway" I might send them a "yes that's warez take the link down" PM

I don't know what the point of this thread even is if you're not gonna reply to my posts when i'm trying to explain how this shit works but to clarify further:
don't be ban me because I don't know the right section, tell me what it needs to go in
this doesn't work on large forums like this. We can't just have everyone go "WHATEVER I'LL POST WHERE EVER I WANT AND LET THE MODS DEAL WITH IT". The forum would be a dump and our jobs would be hell. That's why we're banning you, to get you to take responsibility and not be lazy about our rules.
I don't think that Ninja101 follows that pattern.
Most don't as far as I'm aware. If it was a semi-common thing, my ban history is long enough that I'd have gotten it at least once before.
I don't know what the point of this thread even is if you're not gonna reply to my posts when i'm trying to explain how this shit works but to clarify further: this doesn't work on large forums like this. As for your question, I didn't see it. Sorry!.
Ok, is there not a warning system? Or anything like that?
Facepunch has a warning system. Its called other users. If you see people banned for common things, you quickly pick up that you shouldn't do those things (posting about ratings, first comments, etc). Common sense stuff. These are unspoken rules about things that are not tolerated here, and occasionally people toe the line and get slapped with a minor ban. Which is a trivial thing, really. So in reality, it is easier and more efficient for the Mods to give someone a minor ban (that they will carry with them as a permanent reminder), rather than just sweeping the problem away with an edit, pm or move. If mods don't ban anyone, there is no incentive to follow the rules, and therefor people would become content to post in the wrong section, because they know the mods will just move it for them. It really shouldn't be the mod's job to babysit individual users and manage a 'warning system' when they can just give a user that makes an error a slap on the wrist, and then both parties can be on their way. If the poster doesn't understand why he was banned (or better, recognizes the reason he was banned, and makes a change to his habits), they can use the RC to their advantage, to either figure the problem out, or reflect on what changes they need to make. The mods are here to help, but they are volunteers and this is a big forum. They only have so much time, and making a complex warning system would only add to the headache. You said you have been registered for ~720 days. Really, I think that should be plenty of time to get a feeling for what is acceptable on facepunch, and what is not. When in doubt, don't post, and check other's ban histories. (Also, in the future, if you have a question about what is acceptable to post and what is not, you can always ask another user (like me!) through PM, and I will try my best to get you an answer, or help work through the question with you.)
Yeah I understand but if their post count is like 1, warn them and just tell them to look at the sections. as for me, I don't know what a rant would go under, so I'm pretty sure its this, or the MASS DEBATE topic, and I don't think this would be a massive debate. How is a big ol' obvious (but short) ban saying "Hey you posted in the wrong section, don't do it again or you'll see more of this" not a very clear warning?
Yeah I understand but if their post count is like 1, warn them and just tell them to look at the sections. as for me, I don't know what a rant would go under, so I'm pretty sure its this, or the MASS DEBATE topic, and I don't think this would be a massive debate. I guess that kind of thing would make sense if it was something that could have arguably gone in that forum (eg. not realizing there was a musicians gig room forum and putting a thread about your new guitar in the music section) but if it's something really dumb like posting a video about your cat in sensationalist headlines then that's just stupid and is very banworthy.
You're being very passive-aggressive in this thread, loper. Chill.
I know, but really a ban for them not knowing? Now if they do it more than once sure, maybe just a little one. Other wise it seems a little drastic. Now, I'm not sure how long I've been registered, When I logged in right before found out I was baned it said "It has been 720 since you registered, please change your password." or something like that. You see it says July under my name, yet that poped up. In the general, I'm still new Didn't know that was a insta-ban here, but why is that a ban. I just didn't want to make a dupe topic just to fix it my self and need then answer my own question, or not post it and let someone else do it.

Didn't think of that" or something like that. It's just I'd wouldn't think that is the first step as a warning. Its normally a PM or a reply, not a ban really. Its the fact that I was baned. Why something little like that? And why didn't I know about that?
