KABUL, Afghanistan — The new U.S. ambassador to Afghanistan called a sudden rash of attacks on international forces by their Afghan partners "troubling" Monday, after an Afghan policeman opened fire on NATO forces in the fifth such assault in a week.
No international service members were killed in the latest attack. A Taliban spokesman claimed responsibility for the shooting in the eastern province of Nangarhar, claiming the attacker was a police officer who had been in contact with insurgents before the assault.
A spike in so-called "green-on-blue" attacks, in which Afghan security forces or attackers wearing their uniforms turn their guns on coalition troops, has raised concerns as NATO aims to turn over control for security to Afghan forces in a little more than two years.
"It's obviously very troubling, not just to us, but it's also very troubling to our Afghan partners," U.S. Ambassador James Cunningham told reporters in the capital in his first public comments after taking over the post earlier in the day.
"There's a lot of work being done to understand why this is happening," Cunningham said. He said it was not clear if all of the attackers were Taliban infiltrators, but noted that the strikes still threaten the "confidence and trust" needed for the two military forces to work together.
"Obviously this undermines or attacks that confidence and trust," Cunningham said.
Taliban insurgents are eager to exploit any such rift.
The trend also raises renewed concern that insurgents may be infiltrating the Afghan army and police, despite intensified screening.
At least seven American service members have been killed in the past week by either their Afghan counterparts or attackers wearing their uniforms.
Jesus, it seems like this is happening at least twice a week now. Thank goodness no one was killed or seriously injured this time.
these seriously have to be planned
This is awful.
there has been an attack almost every day in the past week

It's a pretty effective attack for them, I'm afraid. What better way for the Taliban to ensure their power after we leave by undermining the trust between the coalition and the people they're training to replace them?
Thats gotta be psychologically terrifying.
Kids are growing up in this scenery.
The sooner we leave in 2014 the better. Leave that corrupt country to rot.
staying until 2017 now. not 2014.

And what of the innocents? The one who never wanted to be a part of this ridiculous war? Not that I'm saying we should be there but I definitely don't think it should be left to just "rot".

Well the problem is every time we drop a big bomb to take out some taliban it maybe recks a house and then those "innocents" more often than not get pissed off and join the taliban. Its similar problem to that the americans faced in vietnam.

Generally when a foreign army bombs your house you get pissed off enough to join the insurgency, or in their view, the resistance.

enough people have died, if they want to shit all over their country they should be allowed to do so without killing NATO troops who shouldn't even be there in the first place
Think of the ANP who are just trying to do their job. :C

Britain has definitely had enough. We're actually losing too many personnel now, and I don't think morale is doing too good. But I've always said this was another Vietnam, and that's all it's going to be, even down to the changing of strategies every time a new commander takes over the operation. The Taliban know their land so much better than us and despite all our air power and equipment they can still crawl all over us. They still know exactly what they're doing.

Nah, the Tet Offensive destroyed the NVA as an effective fighting force, and if we stayed there, we would have won. In Afghanistan, there is no clear enemy, and the ones we do kill just keep coming back, victory isn't in our sights nomatter how long we stay there.
I'm worried for the people and their futures, but it seems nothing we do can help them. The most I can hope for is that they as a whole have enough sense to resist and eventually destroy the Taliban on their own.

France will be out by the end of this year
I can tell you guys the exact reason why this is happening. We are pulling out. It is viewed as courageous and bold to kill an American Soldier, and their window of opportunity is shrinking for them to "bag one" as it were. The Afghani people only see us as extra income for their communities. They aren't stupid. As soon as we start withdrawing they will assault us with renewed vigor.
Fuck the Afghans. We got Bin Ladin, lets get the fuck out.
