Tesla was dealt a crushing blow in New Jersey today after the state's Motor Vehicle Commission passed a rule that will prevent the company from selling its electric cars directly to consumers starting in April. Unlike other automakers, Tesla sells its Model S through company-owned retail stores — a business model that cuts out the franchised auto dealerships that have ruled the market for decades. New Jersey is the third US state to ban car manufacturers from selling directly to customers, joining Texas and Arizona. But unlike those two states, New Jersey is home to a booming luxury vehicle market, making this a major loss for Tesla.
As you might guess, Tesla is outraged by the decision. In a blog post, the company blasted Governor Chris Christie's administration for deceitful tactics. Tesla claims that Christie previously agreed to delay the proposed amendment, which would have allowed "a fair process" in the state legislature. But yesterday — just 24 hours before the amendment was hurriedly passed — Tesla says it abruptly received word that Christie's administration "had gone back on its word." Tesla says the amendment "is an affront to the very concept of a free market." And the company insists this isn't just about cutting out the middleman; Tesla says full control over the buying experience is necessary to properly educate car buyers about the benefits that come with going electric.
isn't the republican party allegedly pro-free market? :v:
its not the republicans, everybody in new jersey is unionised, in this case the car dealers union is fighting this because tesla is muscling in on them
Not allowing manufacturers to sell directly to customers doesn't make sense to me at all.
Gosh every time I look at that car I get a tingle. It's such a good looking car.
isn't that a bitch, stupid luxury cars.

No, the republican party is pro-rich corporations who are lobbying them. They fail to be intellectually consistent on anything.
I dislike when quotes are placed around words that weren't actually said at any point
Hell, I'd go to a different state to buy a Tesla.
its not the republicans, everybody in new jersey is unionised, in this case the car dealers union is fighting this because tesla is muscling in on them
last i checked this "Union" was essentially large business banding together, not your actual union of workers/etc. :v:
the news article is wrong, you can purchase a tesla car in texas
but there is a texas law that allows only dealerships to offer test drives.

I'd say the dealership/union relationship is much much stronger than political ties, honestly. This isn't a partisan issue, it's a money issue. It could have been anyone in that position. The money was right, so he took it.
Ah
Older companies being threatened by new developments recurring to state in order to deter competence?
In other news, the world is not flat and it seems there are more continents than Europe.
If I had the money to drop on that kind of car I would just buy a plane ticket to the nearest dealership in the next state and drive it back.
last i checked this "Union" was essentially large business banding together, not your actual union of workers/etc. :v:
true but like i said everyone in new jersey is in some sort of union or group, its essentially tons of car dealerships bitching because they wanted to force tesla to do buisness the new jersey way or stay out and tesla basically said screw you
Hell, I'd go to a different state to buy a Tesla.
Enjoy your insanely high taxes. Our property tax doubled from buying a BMW in Louisiana a few years ago.
This is most likely the work of those Oil Companies, seeing Tesla pushing out something that will really harm them when it starts to snowball into everyone having one.

The Auto dealers Association in Texas fought hard against Tesla. Tesla had the graces of the people and plenty of lawmakers and it passed in the house, but failed in the senate. Even Rick Perry said that if Tesla bill made it to his desk he would sign it. It's the Auto Dealers Association that's leading these crusades with their lobbying power. Even some of the biggest car dealership owners in Texas fully supported Tesla's better model.
...During the regular session, Gov. Rick Perry promised Tesla owner Elon Musk that he would sign a bill allowing Tesla to sell it’s electric cars, but the bill died before it reached the governor's desk.
State law currently prohibits Tesla from operating a dealership in Texas or even talking about the price -- they start at $95,000 -- to any potential customers.
"So the galleries, they are education centers." said Tesla’s Alexis Georgeson. "So you can come in, you can speak with our product specialists [and] we can tell you about Model S -- 300 miles of range, 0 to 60 (mph) in 4.2 seconds, 416 horsepower. We can tell you about all the phenomenal aspects of the car, but we can’t actually sell you one."...
http://tpr.org/post/tesla-opens-texas-supercharger-stations-still-cant-sell-vehicles-state
They're going to try again in 2015.
Their efforts to shut down Tesla in Texas was just a minor inconvenience:

Yeah I don't understand how they can just disallow a business from operating in their state because it hurts other privately owned businesses. This has no place in law.
Hell, I'd go to a different state to buy a Tesla.
Especially if you've got the money to buy one anyways.

I dunno man, Texas has a decent amount of purchases.
I'm surprised there's even 10 or less in Alaska to be honest. Having one up there is true dedication.

Well, 0 is less than 10 so maybes there isn't one.
for those of you saying you would just go to another state and buy a tesla,
all tesla model S cars are built to order. you don't actually get your car until 3 months after you buy it

Tesla has a forums? Seems pretty useless.
Tesla has a forums? Seems pretty useless.
Tesla is completely unrivaled in the auto industry when it comes to engaging with the consumer and making changes based on feedback. I pick on the little problems with the Model S a lot but I really don't have much bad to say about the company itself.
There are also fan forums, teslamotorsclub. The Tesla folks hang out there sometimes too.

It looks like a more plain Jag.
I mean, as much as I like Tesla, that car looks quite plain.
