The ecord sold 41,000 copies in 2011, up from 35,000 in 2010 and 34,800 in 2009.Abbey Road was the second-highest selling vinyl album in 2008, with its 16,500 copies eclipsed by Radiohead's In Rainbows, which sold 25,800 that year. The gradual increase in vinyl sales for Abbey Road over the past few years mirrors an overall upward trend in vinyl sales, though the format only accounts for 3.9 percent of total music sales for the year. Other vinyl best-sellers for 2011 include Fleet Foxes, Mumford & Sons and Adele, whose 21 was the overall top-selling album of the year. Both of Bon Iver's full-length albums were in the Top 10, along with recent releases by the Black Keys, Radiohead and Wilco, all of whom have traditionally sold well in the format. The top 10 vinyl albums of 2011, according to Nielsen SoundScan, are as follows: 1. The Beatles - Abbey Road (41,000) 2. Fleet Foxes - Helplessness Blues (29,700) 3. Bon Iver - Bon Iver (27,200) 4. Mumford & Sons - Sigh No More (26,800) 5. Radiohead - The King of Limbs (20,800) 6. Adele - 21 (16,500) 7. Bon Iver - For Emma, Forever Ago (16,200) 8. Wilco - The Whole Love (14,900) 9. The Black Keys - Brothers (14,200) 10. The Black Keys - El Camino (13,800)
Source
I actually find it awesome that Vinyl still exists, I like to collect albums and listen to them. It's a whole different experience. I wouldn't say it is better, but it is definitely worth at least having a few, the crackle, the odd pops, it is very interesting.
In other news...enough vinyl stores are still open to warrant a top selling list.
I have Helplessness Blues and Brothers. Awesome albums. I prefer to have the original of Abbey Road though.
With the way most digital audio has been mixed lately, I can see why vinyl sales going up. Half of these record studios feel some idiotic need to push the gain up to, five, eight decibels for no good reason, and it kills any sentiment of dynamics. It's like as if they want you not buy modern media.
I wonder if there will be a point at which vinyls will outsell CDs again because all the "modern" distribution will be purely digital and nobody is going to hold onto CDs for their qualities, unlike with vinyl.
Ugh, beatles
don't get this stuff with CDs do you?
I don't agree with it.
Not many albums do, but I've heard enough to say that the new day and age is fucked over with loudly mastered crap.
In other news...enough vinyl stores are still open to warrant a top selling list.
best buy sells vinyl
In other news...enough vinyl stores are still open to warrant a top selling list.
I honestly hope you're joking, you'd actually be surprised how many people still buy vinyl.
I work in a music store that sells vinyl. It doesn't sell as much as it did last year, but it sells a good amount. I think vinyl is a fad in my opinion but I know Facepunch is going to disagree with me.
i want to get the white album in vinyl

Damn hipsters
You can't just say it's a fad without a reason.
Let's see. Vinyl sales weren't all that big until last year and died about three months after it was big. Yes, there are the hipsters who come in and buy all types of vinyl that no one has ever heard of or bands that I have heard but the fact that it's on vinyl somehow makes it superior. I work in a music store, worked there almost two years now. I know what people buy and who buys it.
I think vinyl is a fad in my opinion but I know Facepunch is going to disagree with me.
... how can a 200 year-old medium be a fad? i don't understand your logic it's like saying land-line telephones are a fad
... how can a 200 year-old medium be a fad? i don't understand your logic it's like saying land-line telephones are a fad
How many people still use land line phones though? How many people still use type writers? Some people, sure. But not everyone.
the fact that it's on vinyl somehow makes it superior.
it does in some cases on a subjective level. the new noel gallagher album is horribly produced on cd and digital; the loudness is painful. sounds a lot better on vinyl
How many people still use land line phones though? How many people still use type writers? Some people, sure. But not everyone.
to the first question: hundreds and hundreds of millions. you're still not answering the question of how vinyl is a fad anyway. a fad is something that comes and goes quickly as a result of the bandwagon effect right? but vinyl has been around for 200 years edit: but whatever. different tastes. i do think it's annoying when pseudo-hipster kids buy arctic monkeys n shit on vinyl to look cool

Some buy it to boast and that's all. [editline]6th January 2012[/editline]
How many people still use land line phones though? How many people still use type writers? Some people, sure. But not everyone.
But listening to vinyl is a whole new experience of music. You think that mp3s is the peak of the music industry? There's no going forward from digital, so we'll have to go back to the most successful format to know what all the fuss was about.
How many people still use land line phones though? How many people still use type writers? Some people, sure. But not everyone.
The reason Vinyl hasn't completely been phased out, is because unlike the other mediums mentioned, Music has dramatically lowered in quality both sound and musicianship wise. When music has gone above the quality of vinyls (Which it can, now that music is not limited by the capacity of a CD or a Vinyl Record, but we still have shit quality even with unlimited space.) We will see a drop in vinyl ether to a small minority, or completely. On a related note, when Apple finally reissues The Beatle's complete catalog on vinyl again, all top spots will be occupied by The Beatles.
CDs can die. Vinyl will live.
as a dj i can say that while it is sad for vinyl to be dying out, electronic formats are so much more practical. not to mention vinyl highlighting and creating loads of problems in mastering, requiring songs to literally be mastered only for vinyl and nothing else. good to see vinyl is still alive en masse though
The heart and soul of DJing is dead when vinyl stops being pressed for them. Sad times.
The heart and soul of DJing is dead when vinyl stops being pressed for them. Sad times.
this is in no way true, i love it and not having the fear of losing an incredibly expensive record bag makes the experience way more stress free
Yeah but you can't seriously admit that carrying a box makes DJing worse. Just says you're a lazy sod. :v:
Yeah but you can't seriously admit that carrying a box makes DJing worse. Just says you're a lazy sod. :v:
if it gets stolen by a lazy raver however, you lose £300
if it gets stolen by a lazy raver however, you lose £300
Maybe.. but realistically that would never happen.
Maybe.. but realistically that would never happen.
you'd think that, but it happens all the time. it even happens at festivals, ive heard of backstage pioneer equipment going missing that can cost up to £2000. having .wavs to play out on CDs makes everything so cheap and easy, if i lose my cd bag im only losing the cost of blank cds and a bag though someone somewhere does gain like £100 in .wavs but they wouldn't have paid for them anyway
