Microsoft says Illumiroom is unlikely to be released, as it would be too expensive for consumers.Speaking to AusGamers, Xbox One head of product planning Albert Penello explained that Microsoft likes the tech, but the cost would be prohibitive.
“I wouldn’t expect you’ll see that,” Penello said when asked if we’re likely to see Illumiroom greenlit for release. “It’s very, very cool tech but it’s, like, for a consumer, it requires projectors and things. It’s really super-neat if you’re in the lab and you’ve got Microsoft money and you could totally set up this awesome lab, but... we looked at it, but for an average customer it’s, like, thousands of dollars [for the set up]."
Oh well, eventually the technology will be cheaper.
"you've got microsoft money"
new term for money to waste
Who actually believed that would be real when they showed it off?
not me

everyone says something like this when new technology is shown off or something. i don't get why.
people even said it like, 2 years ago with the occulus rift.

Uh
Why am I saying this?
Because it was obvious it would require a projecter set up in order to do it, something that most people aren't going to buy, have, or want to go out and buy for a small peripheral feature that doesn't seemingly add a whole lot
oh right, any and all criticisms of the games industry and bad.
a rift isn't comparable as a 300+ accessory that completely changes a gaming experience versus a minimum 600$ projector that adds "outside the screen light effects" that remain unconvincing.
I dont see whats so expencive there.... its a kinnect and a projector, sure the software cost a lot likely, but.... they can make software cheaper... its not like it cost actual money per sale of software (short of bandwidth or mabye a CD) So whats the expencive part?
Why so many dumbs.... Seriously... A projector is not that expencive, expecially the one they shown there... £500?
i have 1 one laying around i need to get round to installing into my room...

nothing expensive here. No sir.

What reason is there for that? Given the push for small, inexpensive, high res LCD's for smartphones you'd think projector prices would go down significantly.
The point is moot when big screen tvs with surround systems and star citizen exists.

Because they are pushing for small, inexpensive, high res LCD's for smartphones and not inexpensive projectors?

I would think it's because projectors themselves aren't in the greatest of demand, I mean it's not like a TV where you can just put it on a stand or a wall bracket and job's done, you need to make sure there's enough wall space to project a picture that doesn't end up looking like shit.
I give it five years before someone else comes up with a cheap way to do it and Microsoft shoots them down because they patented it first.
This does remind me of SGI's C A V E system they were selling in the 90's

Didn't really want it anyways honestly; Microsoft doesn't have interesting ideas for gimicks.
I thought that was pretty cool, never heard of this. Some of the abilities were pretty good, could make for some interesting visual experiences

because bulbs for projectors are crazy expensive.

the production of projectors, anything but the lowest end, still require expensive bulbs which won't ever really diminish in price because bulb crafting on that level requires special materials and expensive processes to create. the rest of it besides the lens isn't that expensive.
Honestly, I think the Rift is cool... you get sick if you use it too long and stuff but still...
but as for this moment in human history, anything more seems a little retarded and not needed.

not much can really beat having a direct filling of your peripherals for immersion
Wow this actually sounds like some really cool tech. Hopefully in the near future we see it again.
Are you drunk?
Whatever he's been drinking, he probably found it under the sink.
why complain? Usually people say that we never hear about tech that's really cool and innovative
at least we get closure this time
Oh well, eventually the technology will be cheaper.
Or they'll find a way to more easily integrate it into already existing systems and/or find ways to use cheaper resources.
Really? Projectors arnt that expencive.... kinnets even less considering what they shown, the projector doenst need to have an amazing resolution, one like this:http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Epson-EMP-74-LCD-Projector-Cheap-working-projector-/121171217483?pt=UK_Computing_Sound_Vision_Projectors&hash=item1c365e0c4b
would probibly do to enhance your gameplay...

yeah you're gonna have to do better than bottom of the barrel
also, i don't think it looked like it would enhance much of anything.

I don't like milkandcooki as much as the next guy, but your response doesn't really make sense.
Your first comment specifically stated that you didn't believe it was real, and then your response to milkandcooki changed to that it would be expensive or that consumers wouldn't want to set up a projector.

Real as in a feature of the product people would have access to.
I don't get where the disconnect in saying it would be a real thing the xbox would field by saying "real".
