I think walking is kind of a necessary evil. It helps break up flow from intense action segments. But it does get rather boring when you have to traverse from one area to the next. It also helps with game pacing. It's like dialogue in action movies. Some is necessary, but too much is boring.
at least OoT doesnt have a stamina system like some fucking games. if i wanted to get tired from running id go do it for real
Man, I like Maddox but his content has hit rock bottom lately. It's like he ran out of actual issues to talk about.
Maddox used to kinda funny, now he just comes across as Grandpa Maddox.
The amount of people in the comments who are taking offense are hilarious. He honestly has a point, and I'm not sure if people are hating without actually watching the video. Walking breaks up and pads out the core mechanics. Take Fallout 4 for example. There are mechanics in the game like combat, sneaking around, hacking, and lockpicking. All are mechanics that can be considered "fun mechanics". These mechanics are contained in small regions, let's call them "fun regions". And then there's just walking, lots of walking, to get in between these "fun regions", where there is little to do from a mechanical standpoint. All Maddox is arguing is that he personally doesn't have interest in this padding: he just wants the fun mechanics, without the walking to get there. People seem to argue that the walking is for aesthetic and world-building and pacing and narrative, and all of that stuff. I don't think Maddox is disagreeing with that. He simply doesn't care about it. I personally love worldbuilding and just looking at the world, but I totally understand Maddox's point of view. Maddox is a pinball guy. There's no walking, fluff, worldbuilding, or story in pinball: you launch the ball, you bounce it around, you sink the ball, and you launch another one immediately. No padding, just mechanics. All Maddox is saying is that games like Witcher, Fallout 4, and Zelda are not his kinds of games. He enjoys the fun parts, but finds the walking dragging. If you were to take those games and just turn them into an arena game, where you just teleport from area to area, then that would make Maddox enjoy them much more. Of course, he says this all in an exaggerated and abrasive way. But that's just what Maddox does. I'm honestly not sure why people are so offended by this opinion. It's entirely legitimate. I disagree with it, but it's legitimate.
he's right about OoT tbh, it has way too much walking
the first fallout did a terrific job of world building, and the only method of going from one place to another is fast travel
I think the real problem is games resorting to walking/going from Point A to Point B way too much instead of focusing the action in a single areas or adding more variety to the world while you travel. It makes sense when it's done a couple of times. But when it's done the same way, everytime, it gets tedious and boring.

That's not being offended, it's disagreeing. What you said could be a reasonable argument. But it's not what Maddox said at all. He straight up says that Ocarina of Time sucks shit and that people who like it are idiots, not that it just isn't a game for him. Even if it's supposed to be satire or bait, it's pretty dumb either way. It's just a crap video. He's ranted about dumb, silly stuff before and did a great job with it (like the pepperoni thing; I love pepperoni and I thought that video was great). This video just seems like he's grasping really hard for views and it's kinda pathetic.

Because I have watched less than four, and even I am able to instantly interpret that he's being facetious. If you think he is legitimately saying that Ocarina of Time legitimately sucks and people who like it are legitimately idiots, then I'm really not sure what to tell you, other than you're really skewing the point of Maddox by taking his words at face value. :v: Like, maybe I'm mistaken here, but I seem to remember people really enjoying Maddox's video on pizza. If I am remembering correctly, then please watch this video, and tell me how his attitude is different between videos.
first off He doesn't make a single funny joke in this video, and just comes off as incredibly obnoxious. second off Pacing is important and it's good to have sections where you can cool off and slow down for a minute or two. It does wonders for games with good atmosphere. Imagine Shadow of the Colossus with no horse sections. The tone would be completely fucked, it would lose the sense of scale and the contrast between the quiet serene environments and the insane roller coaster rides of boss fights. There's plenty of games that are all action all the time if you have zero patience and can't appreciate any moments of quiet, not everything has to shove constant action in your face 100% of the time. [editline]25th January 2017[/editline] Ironically being obnoxious is still being obnoxious.
That's just Maddox to me. Every video I've seen of him (reminder, that's only three or four, including the aforementioned pizza video) have been unfunny and extremely obnoxious. I'm not disagreeing with that, and again, I don't think Maddox would argue that the tone of such games would be fucked. He just doesn't care about that tone. This isn't a difficult concept to understand. :v: Again, that's just Maddox to me. Every video I've seen him do has been exactly that, being ironically obnoxious.

Don't try to pull that card on me. Like I said, even if it's supposed to be facetious, it's not doing a good job. There's no subtly to it. The joke isn't funny. He just goes "this popular thing is SHIT, oh here come the haters!". He picked a low-hanging-fruit controversial topic and gave a really flimsy argument. I like his style of content and I get what he's going for, but this isn't nearly as good as his older videos were.

To me, there's no difference in videos. But then, I don't like Maddox to begin with, exactly because he's always been unfunny and abrasively obnoxious to me. :v:
Okay if you don't like walking, then why do you keep buying games that involve Exploring? Like Zelda for example hmm? Maddox has gone down the drain.
Maddox is just fucking annoying to listen to, he's not funny and often misses the point
I don't know man I'm pretty sure he's actually a manchild.
Sounds like something a cuck would say.
Super BunnyHop already has a great counter to this. His moaning about Shadow of the Colossus shows quite a lack of insight, as the Colossi in that game wouldn't feel as nearly as dramatic or massive if they hadn't been surrounded by the mass of emptiness and quiet that was in the game.Even if it feels boring for those moments of travel the peaks which those walking segments intensify more than make up for it, and make the game more interesting and entertaining in the end than if you instantly travelled to each point. Though considering how he hates stories in games too I'm honestly not surprised he can't stand a bit of down time.
If I played a game, and instead of walking there was just instant teleporting from point A to point B, it'd be a very fucking boring game.
Though considering how he hates stories in games too I'm honestly not surprised he can't stand a bit of down time.
There's a subset of gamers that complain about this kind of thing often, and it weirds me out how they can't see that these games will never be to their taste. Arin Hanson is another example of what I'm talking about. I call them 'Gamer Gamers', in the sense that they often have no patience for story, exploration, instructions, emotional moments, atmosphere, cutscenes, or any of that. They prefer their games to be games in the most basic sense of the word. They're usually better off playing platformers, retro games, low-story constant action FPS games, so on. What annoys me though is that they don't identify this and instead play games like The Witcher 3 and then bitch constantly about them. It's just obnoxious. It's like, yeah, RPGs have stories and instructions in them. Go play fuckin' Super Meat Boy if you hate story so much.
Thought he'd be talking about this kinda walking, instead of whatever that was.
Some of my favorite games are quiet moments punctuated by action, stuff like Rise of Flight or Silent Hunter (subsim). [editline]25th January 2017[/editline] Personally, i can't stand games that are just "game". They're generally super boring to me and have nothing to hook me in.

Plus, I'd like to see what this guy thought of how Half-Life did cutscenes.
why is Maddox still around? it's so painfully obvious he never fully made the transition from ~early 2000s Internet-humor and he's just thrashing about, trying to get some footing in "modern" trends. his content these days is trash.
Boy, Maddox just hasn't been the same since Dick Masterson cockblocked his creepy ex-gf stalker triangle :v:
This is 100% satire. He said he likes MGSV.
That might be the most watered-down thing I've ever watched. "Augh, what a dumb stupid idiot!" sounds like an elementary school kid.
