The kick drum sits so weirdly in the mix. It's not quite as bad as the St. Anger snare though.
I prefer the St. Anger snare over the noisy clipping of Death Magnetic. That album sounds like a lost Merzbow album sometimes.
wasn't the guitar hero version of death magnetic way better than the actual release for some reason?
Man, I wish the guitar was a little more prominent.

Comparison for those who are interested.

They learned their lesson from Death Magnetic it seems, it doesn't blast my ears off. It's a tiny bit fatiguing to listen to, but it's not outright unpleasant like DM was. I noticed that they're pretty much revisiting their old styles in some of the songs on this one. Spit out the bone and Hardwired sound very thrashy, they could almost be a hybrid of MoP and AJFA. Dream no More sounds like it could be on either Load or ReLoad. Now That We're Dead sounds like it could be on the Black album. Enjoying it a lot so far.
Okay, now they're just taking the piss. Hardwired had some similar problems for me, but this just sounds like some leftover riffs frankensteined lazily into a song. I think this song could work with a more consistent drive but the riffs are just too weak to support the constant breaks and rhythm changes. And when they go for drive, there is no build-up, the main riff just blasts away, which maybe work if the main riff could convey any convincing sense of drive. Death magnetic had some great riffs and even greater variations but this is just a bucket of weak scraps. Idk, I'm just not digging it, its structurally weak and the individual elements are not that strong to begin with. I kinda get the vibe of something a random song generator would spit out if you set it to replicate more death magnetic songs. And its not that I think Hardwired is downright bad, it just feels half-heartedly done, like something you'd slap together in between sessions. Maybe It needs some more time but Metallica Albums are sort of hit or miss for me.

I think the album is good, it's a grower, like for me each listen through and it gets better.
