French troops received a triumphant welcome as they deployed in strife-torn Central African Republic on Saturday, with thousands cheering their arrival as part of a bid to stamp out deadly sectarian violence.
French President Francois Hollande said reinforcements to a UN-mandated force would reach 1,600 troops -- 400 more than previously envisaged -- by Saturday evening and had been told to "disarm all the militias and armed groups terrorising the population".
Sectarian violence between Muslim and Christian communities, that has swept the nation since a March coup, has left at least 300 dead in a wave of massacres and reprisal attacks since Thursday, the Red Cross said.

The African Union is to increase significantly the number of troops sent to end communal fighting in the Central African Republic.
The size of the AU force will rise to 6,000, France said as it moved to boost its own freshly deployed troop contingent to 1,600.
Something about this picture is both really aesthetically pleasing but very unsettling. Maybe it's the colors but its like, in the trees.

Maybe in the late 1800s

Must be the lack of white flags

No.
"Hi we're here to prevent genocide by doing it ourselves."
Oh please. If you're going to make that sort of comment you may as well put in some effort.
OH LOOK. WHITE PEOPLE ARE ENFORCING APARTHEID ON AFRICANS AGAIN.
There.
Edit: In all seriousness, hopefully their efforts pay off and the bloodshed is lessened and the situation brought under control. People shouldn't have to live in terror.

Have your brain cells been on strike since you were born or something
At least they are trying to prevent anymore killings seeing as the country cant, honestly I wonder if most of central Africa can govern itself

The article says African troops, not American troops.
Where is bad reading when you need it?
"Hi we're here to prevent genocide by doing it ourselves."
Well what the hell do you want them to do, send a sternly worded letter politely asking them to stop killing people?
I'm glad lessons appear to have been learned from Rwanda

Don't forget French troops.
Also, Americans don't do genocide.

Not really, Belgium pretty much engineered that situation to happen years before it actually did - they were easily the most vile colonial empire. France have historically been much better - no colonialism is positive, but at least they tried to give the people they occupied some level of respect and autonomy.

Didn't they try to play the different groups in Vietnam off of each other?

French Indochina wasn't very good, yeah.

Except for that one time with the the indigenous people, but apparently nobody cares about them, because I've never heard anyone chew us out over that.

Eh, I dunno about that. French troops used literal torcher in Algeria during the Algerian uprising.

I meant not anymore.
To my knowledge at least. God I hope not.

You can hardly call the majority of that an "American" thing. Pretty much everyone took a part in it, although the later dates were pretty much a bunch of racists wanting genocide an not land-hungry people not giving a fuck who they kill so they can get a slice of the New World.
What about the Spaniards completely annihilating all of South America, who actually had more developed cultures than in the North? People bring that up less than the native Americans.
It's stupid to bring up stuff that happened 300 years ago anyway.

all of the known world was built by the subjugation of (insert people here)
Can't conquer without annihilating, assimilating or subjugating the lands natives.
so its ironic anytime a white, middle class kid in just about any country starts being smarmy about atrocities committed by a nation.
