Nancy Salgado, 26, told The Real News that she felt like she had to speak out during McDonald’s USA President Jeff Stratton’s speech at the Union League Club of Chicago on Friday for the sake of her children. “It’s really hard for me to feed my two kids and struggle day to day,” she shouted as Stratton was speaking. “Do you think this is fair, that I have to be making $8.25 when I’ve worked for McDonald’s for ten years?” “I’ve been there for forty years,” Stratton replied from the podium. “The thing is that I need a raise. But you’re not helping your employees. How is this possible?” Salgado asked. At that point, someone approached Salgado and informed her that she was going to be arrested.
wow
It really is sad how low minimum wage is. People can't live off of 8.25 an hour
His response to her about being there for 40 years doesn't really help his case when she clearly makes way less than 1/4th what he does.
Wow, what an entitled little fuck, she's only been doing this poorly paid, precarious job for 10 years
“I’ve been there for forty years” Stratton replied from the podium.
No but seriously since when can you get arrested for asking for a raise? Is america a fucked up place or is hierarchy in general going too far?
It really is sad how low minimum wage is. People can't live off of 8.25 an hour
Don't move to spain minimum wage here is about 5€ and you're lucky if you get that, most people who work here get an average of about 3-4€ per hour and living cost is about the same as U.S and spanish goverment take a good 20% off you're paycheck
It really is sad how low minimum wage is. People can't live off of 8.25 an hour
My dad keeps saying you're not supposed to live on minimum wage, rather than move up to a better paying job. :v:
The social conservative side of me wonders why she stayed their 10 years if she wasn't getting a raise. Edit: I'm not saying it's easy. I'm saying I'm surprised she didn't manage to get another job in that time.
this. is. disgusting.
The social conservative side of me wonders why she stayed their 10 years if she wasn't getting a raise.
Jobs don't grow on trees.
Fucking scum. Living of minimum wage is pretty bad. Reminds me on that one time that the FDP wanted to create a minimum wage of about 4 €. No one can afford shit with this.
It really is sad how low minimum wage is. People can't live off of 8.25 an hour
7.25
8.25 usd Holy F**k i had 15 rounded down usd (from swedish kroner) as tech support More money to the employees
The social conservative side of me wonders why she stayed their 10 years if she wasn't getting a raise.
It happenned in America, where education is not free. I'm not going to assume that this is her situation, but some people outright can't afford education, and therefore can't access a qualified job. From there on you either accept accept to work in bad conditions for minimum wage or you stay unpaid for a few months while looking for a better job, which is not that great of an option considering there already isn't jobs for everyone.
The social conservative side of me wonders why she stayed their 10 years if she wasn't getting a raise.
Why don't you ask her? Why don't you walk down to your nearest McDonalds, find the oldest person working there, and ask them why they're just so content to keep working at McDonalds when the world offers so many other rich and varied opportunities to everybody, even people without college degrees or the means to afford college degrees. See what they say.
what the fuck was she arrested for
No but seriously since when can you get arrested for asking for a raise? Is america a fucked up place or is hierarchy in general going too far?
it isn't as awful as being arrested for the question, it was for showing up to a speech only to ask unrelated questions and start a scene, which in this case could be considered an attempt at publicly undermining the guy with 'false' or 'exaggerated' claims. Telling a crowd that you're supporting a family and can't actually live as a full time employee in front of the president of the company is pretty hefty, but entirely truthful.
His response to her about being there for 40 years doesn't really help his case when she clearly makes way less than 1/4th what he does.
his time at the company means nothing if he didn't start as a burger flipper and stay there for a decade, and I can guarantee "1/4th" is waaaaaay underestimating his salary
what a sensationalist headline. If you break into an event you weren't invited to (elegant dinner doesn't seem like the place a McDonalds employee would be) and start screaming at participants, you're going to be arrested.
what the fuck was she arrested for
Apparently she was trespassing on the property. Whether or not she actually was, I have no idea. Oh, and interrupting the speech, which is now a crime punishable by law now.
what a sensationalist headline. If you start screaming at participants, you're going to be arrested.
Escorted off the premises, I understand, but arrested?
Jobs don't grow on trees.
Simmer down. I've joined in many other topics on this and I'm far from the one who says, "Oh just find another job." I'm just surprised she couldn't find another in 10 years.
Jesus, that is really sad. To think that she has been doing that for 10 years. Minimum wage is stupid.
Well, time to spread to my friends to stop eating mcdonalds.
It really is sad how low minimum wage is. People can't live off of 8.25 an hour
People in Central/Eastern Europe work for 3 euros an hour.
ITT: people who don't understand just how bad the job market is.
what the fuck was she arrested for
trespassing. in the video it shows a gathering of a lot of higher-looking class people, so that makes me wonder if she barged in there uninvited.
My dad keeps saying you're not supposed to live on minimum wage, rather than move up to a better paying job. :v:
the american dream ahah wow what a dumb fuck
Well, time to spread to my friends to stop eating mcdonalds.
It isn't just McDonald's, all fast food is like this. One of my managers has worked at Taco Bell for 6 years and makes $9.00 an hour, I have worked there for 3 years and I make $7.25, which is AZ minimum wage.
Well, time to spread to my friends to stop eating mcdonalds.
And using phones, and most consoles, and basically anything produced by precarious labor? If anything they should stop eating mac donald's for how sub-par it is in terms of taste and health, but then again not everyone can afford better food and not everyone has the time to make their own meals, which would be the best option. It shouldn't come as a shock that people who work at macdonald's are underpaid and/or treated like garbage. We're talking about a corporation that encompasses millions of workers worldwide, and they didn't get where they are today by being nice. The same could be said about a lot of corporations. They're not competing to know who's going to be the most evil among them, they're trying to stay competitive, which is to say, alive. Yet there's the end result. Salaries that look like they're coming straight out of the 19th century.
his time at the company means nothing if he didn't start as a burger flipper and stay there for a decade, and I can guarantee "1/4th" is waaaaaay underestimating his salary
Well, apparently:
Stratton joined McDonald’s as a crewmember in his hometown of Detroit, Michigan in 1973. He worked his way up through the restaurants and held various field operations positions in the Detroit Region until 1987 when he was promoted to Staff Director of Operations and Menu Management. In 1990, Stratton moved to Columbus to serve as the Director of Operations, and later held several corporate positions at the company’s headquarters before returning to field operations as the Regional Vice President for the McDonald’s Denver Region in 1998. In 2001, Stratton became Senior Vice President and Chief Supporting Officer of the West Division and was promoted to West Division President later that year. Stratton returned to home office in 2002 and joined the U.S. leadership team as the Executive Vice President and Chief Restaurant Operations Officer for McDonald’s U.S.A. In 2005, Stratton became Worldwide Chief Restaurant Officer.
Whoa you mean big fast food corporations don't care about their employees what a shocker
