It shows the effect of hundreds of green laser pointers on an Egyptian chopper (possibly an Mi-8/17 Hip) during the anti-Morsi protests in Tahrir Square, Cairo, Egypt on Jun. 30, 2013.
http://theaviationist.com/?p=18843 Quite a dick move
Dick move, but you can't say it's not effective. Makes me think why hasn't this been done more often on protests. Doesn't need to be only on planes; pretty sure if you blind a guy on a police van he's gonna fuck it up, which is what they want.
What a great way to end up with someone dead. Aren't lasers terrible for aircraft?
What a great way to end up with someone dead. Aren't lasers terrible for aircraft?
No, just your eyes.
That could have backfired terribly.
It's not lasers, it's just Egypt's inferior cloaking technology failing to work correctly as usual
What a great way to end up with someone dead. Aren't lasers terrible for aircraft?
No, unless it reflects off of something and blinds the pilot Though they probably got missile lock warnings
Looks like it was caught in an alien tractor beam.
Surely reflective windows and goggles should do the trick? I thought those would just give you a blurred visor but doesn't temporarily blind you in one eye.
Rave-Copter!
Hey, let's blind the pilot of a helicopter hovering directly above us! Nothing can go wrong!

Literally just watched something about this on Fake Britain, which is weird. Anyhow, if you shine into the window of the helicopter apparently it can cause an accident. Edit: just re-read my post and now I'm just like 'no shit'
That was pretty dumb of the protesters, attempting to blind a helicopter pilot who's flying a metal chunk filled with fuel above an extremely dense crowd of people. And dickish too, it might have caused permanent eye damage to the pilot, who's only doing his job. (It doesn't seem like the helicopter was attacking them or doing anything harmful)
Wow that was really really fucking dumb. They're extremely lucky the pilot wasn't blinded and crash into the crowd.
Hey, let's blind the pilot of a helicopter hovering directly above us! Nothing can go wrong!
Blinding a heli pilot isn't going to immediately send the helicopter plummeting down, he would just hover in place and wait for the sight to return. Planes are a different matter.

Planes are a different matter.
Hovering is not a very easy task, and it requires visual references. You can't hover blind, you would definitely start translating to the side or pitch forward, and not even realize it. I don't think people realize how bad lasers are for aircraft. Just one laser can wash out your entire windscreen's view.
so are we still rooting for the protesters or

not quite as effective as the death star but an admirable try
Hundreds of green lasers... and then one guy with a big blue laser. I'm not sure whether he should feel like he's special or like he's an outcast.
Lol and the military is helping the protesters, this is what they get
no aircraft that can be destroyed by laser pens deserves the adjective "military"
no aircraft that can be destroyed by laser pens deserves the adjective "military"
It doesn't get destroyed, just the pilots are blinded. Come on dude, are you even trying?
no aircraft that can be destroyed by laser pens deserves the adjective "military"
Pilot Error is still a thing.
no aircraft that can be destroyed by laser pens deserves the adjective "military"
If you think the goal of the laser pointers is to shoot holes in it then you don't understand anything going on in this thread. Unless you thought al military personal come standard equipped with anti-laser contacts.
It doesn't get destroyed, just the pilots are blinded. Come on dude, are you even trying?
you just said that a blinded pilot would result in a crash unless you're implying that crashes are completely harmless to helicopters?
If this happened in america everyone would have to go to jail.
If this happened in america everyone would have to go to jail.
lmao fuck da usa!!
If this happened in america everyone would have to go to jail.
if this had happened in america those lasers would have been on the end of rifles
