Not surprised in the slightest.
This all reminds me of Sodasopa in South Park. Basically in season 19 South Park tries to fix its old and dated status with modern and hip trends and they start building around Kenny's house (who is very poor) just to attract wealthy people and basically uplifting the image without fixing the very core of the problem. This situation in Brazil is a few leaps forward but seeing how the Olympics have been promoting Braszil as it was 20 years ago it not the way to do things
Stuff like this make me furious. All the money they put into this could help the population of Brazil so much but no, let's use it on ultimately meaningless sports and to impress people from other parts of the world. Fuck the olympics, they aren't important enough to be a priority in a country like Brazil.
to be fair to the olympic committee brazil really was up and coming and getting better. but they had recession after recession and the whole thing should have just been canceled like 2 years ago.
God, the part with the transparent wall is just disgusting
And all those Olympic buildings are gonna be like the ones that Greece built, abandoned and in ruin cause the government can't use them
I want to know how its a better national investment to build new infrastructure for tourists that the majority of your civilians can't even use. Why isn't the common man in Rio worth government aid? I mean its always good to attract wealthy investors to your community but the government is telling their own citizens to fuck off wtf
Had similar stuff in London in 2012, just not to this extent.

#BoycottRio2016 ?
#BoycottRio2016 ?
Too late. The houses are destroyed, the stuff is built. All boycotting them would do now is give Brazil less money, which means even less shit for their people.
yea, but is that money really going back to the people?
yea, but is that money really going back to the people?
every year we have the olympics, and every year they spend aaaalll this fucking money on stuff they could've spent to help their people, and every year people make a stink because of it and not much has come of it. it happens all around the world, no matter what city you put it in. it sucks but there's gonna be no real way to stop it other than just continuing to make these videos and articles until they start reaching the real mainstream, then MAYBE you might have some effect and the UN or someone might start taking action. even if it's in a country that's well off, they usually dump so much fucking money into these huge stadiums and then they're turned into parking lots later. it's so worthless lmao. i'm not usually one to promote yelling and screaming like a buncha assholes but honestly a full scale protest (that'd probably turn into a riot considering what's at discussion here) in the way of the olympics would be the best way to get media attention that might actually make a difference. but it's very unlikely that could help and would probably just end up being a buncha assholes fighting a buncha assholes and we'd get nowhere. i'm a commenter on facepunch, this is not a real suggestion and in no way should be how things are done. the best possible solution would be to peacefully protest this kind of thing or continue to report on this garbage to the UN and the like.
The quotes from the property developer. How do you live with yourself saying that about housing the poor?
The quotes from the property developer. How do you live with yourself saying that about housing the poor?
He doesn't have to worry about hearing a backlash if the sound of his money coming in is loud enough. I feel that a lot of the 'elite' he is building the real estate for shares this view.
And all those Olympic buildings are gonna be like the ones that Greece built, abandoned and in ruin cause the government can't use them
I personally support the idea of creating an Olympic Island that could also be used for international events like the World Cup. This would eliminate the need for building new infrastructure for every Olympics. Area would be controlled by UN to enforce basic laws and human rights.
That money was never going to the people.
The buildings still cost money. If they don't get funded from tickets, prices will go up elsewhere. Not to mention the surrounding tourism for family run businesses. I'd say most people who go to the olypmics poke around a bit in the country as well, probably make a vacation of it.
your shit gets robbed if you walk around in Rio lol
Like I said, no tourism for family run businesses.

I think there have been a few economic analyses done on the London 2012 games that showed that the cost to build the infrastructure for the Olympics actually cost more than the benefits from hosting the game for a few weeks. Even so, countries enjoy this because in the long run it brings more tourists and investors to the area. An Olympic Island would need profitable events for the 4 year gaps between games, and if built from scratch you would need solid infrastructure like sewage, running water, constant power, an airport, ect. I think that's why we stick to using major cities since they already have most of this.
