[release] Thailand says it has recognized Palestine as an independent state. Foreign Ministry spokesman Thani Thongphakdi said Friday that Thailand has informed the Palestinian delegation and all member states at the United Nations in New York that it "has given recognition to the state of Palestine." Thailand has friendly ties with Israel and is a major tourist destination for Israeli travelers. Thai officials have expressed concern that the recent arrest of a Lebanese man allegedly linked to Hezbollah and plotting an attack in Bangkok could hurt ties with Middle Eastern countries.[/release] http://www.ynetnews.com/articles/0,7340,L-4178291,00.html
The move comes as Palestine pushes for full membership at the UN, a bid Washington opposes because it says a political settlement with Israel must be reached first.
Ahahahaha. Like Israel and Palestine could ever come to a fucking political settlement with each other. They are two asshole countries that are determined to not get along with each other under any circumstances. You might as well be asking for the clouds to start raining gumdrops and skittles.
Other countries who recognize the 'State of Palestine': Green countries approve, grey do not or have not.
Strange how most developed nations don't want to recognize palestine.
Strange how most developed nations don't want to recognize palestine.
It's not like there's an influential reason for this... Nato is such a rebel.
What does Israel have to do with Germany, France, or the UK recognizing Palestine? I mean, the US is like the main one who has any interest in Israel at all.
What does Israel have to do with Germany, France, or the UK recognizing Palestine? Yep.
That doesn't very well correlate though. Exceptions to the NATO Argument. 1. Turkey recognizes 2. Iceland recognizes 3. Poland recognizes 4. Czech Republic recognizes 5. Slovakia recognizes 6. Romania recognizes 7. Bulgaria recognizes 8. I put Turkey twice *facepalm* 9. Albania recognizes 10. Bosnia recognizes(I'm actually not sure if that's Bosnia or not, I'm going off my memory of European geography on that one) 9 exceptions is a big hole in the argument. The biggest trend to who recognizes Palestine is the level of development of the country. With the exception of Iceland, I believe every country who is considered "developed" doesn't recognize Palestine. However, even that isn't perfect because there are plenty of developing countries(Mexico, Estonia, Burma, for example) who also don't recognize Palestine, and even a few undeveloped countries that don't. [editline]21st January 2012[/editline] I think that the fact that many NATO countries don't recognize Palestine is mostly coincidental with the fact that just about every developed country is in NATO.

Some countries just don't care.
Bosnia does recognize palestine and it's not quite a NATO state but it's a candidate for joining.
Some countries just don't care.
I seriously doubt it. I mean countries do this sort of shit as a hobby. They love deciding whether a country deserves recognition or not. I figure a few cases might be that the government hasn't come to an official decision yet, but I think just about all those countries have made a decision that they don't want to recognize Palestine at this time. I don't think it's apathy at all. [editline]21st January 2012[/editline]
Bosnia does recognize palestine and it's not quite a NATO state but it's a candidate for joining.
It's shown on the NATO map so I assumed it was a member. You can't expect me to have the NATO roster memorized at all times to pull up on a whim damnit. Also I said that they recognize.
I'm surprised much of Scandinavia denies.
There's also other nations not on the map that have voted 'yes' for Palestinian recognition at UNESCO, but are not on the map, like France and Ireland for example.
There's also other nations not on the map that have voted 'yes' for Palestinian recognition at UNESCO, but are not on the map, like France for example.
Now that's confusing. If France doesn't recognize Palestine as a state why would they vote yes for them to be a member of the UN? [editline]21st January 2012[/editline] Nevermind, it appears Britain and France are considering recognizing Palestine in the next few months.
I'm surprised much of Scandinavia denies.
Norway and Finland votes yes
Hm... it bothers me that Germany is gray on that map.
Due to Israeli lobbyist power and their position as USAs prime ally in the middle-east, Palestine will not be recognized any time soon. I believe some would much prefer Palestine to be completely assimilated/invaded by Israel.
I'm still awfully confused by all this really. Why can't both Palestine and Israel be recognized?
I'm still awfully confused by all this really. Why can't both Palestine and Israel be recognized?
SHh STOP ... THINKING IS NOT ALLOWED

Look at it in terms of influence and importance relative to other things and it makes sense.
How many countries were required to recognize a country for it to be legally considered a country?
How many countries were required to recognize a country for it to be legally considered a country?
One. The one with the biggest stick.
The current Israeli government dosnt want a one sided decleration of independence of Palestine mainly because you cant just declare that you exist as a country in side an other countries teritory. But,you must remember Israel is a democracy and next thing you know you get a very pro Palestinian government. Also the Palestinian authority is autonomus in areas and are heavily dependent on Israel and really as long as we dont get another Arafat or hamas take over fatah, everything should be good.
