Advice on purchasing an 8 string guitar over the internet.
10 replies, posted
I own both a 6 and 7 string guitar. Both Schecters.
I'm considering getting rid of my 6 string due to it not being played at all since maybe November.
I've yet to actually play an 8 string, due to the only music shop anywhere near me has yet to get one in for me to try out. When I 1st tried out my Schecter C-7+, the orange one if you've seen my videos, it felt bizarre having such a thick neck but now after getting used to it actually playing a 6 feels weird.
I can only imagine playing an 8 would be the same difference, but if anyone has any experience in that regard it would be helpful.
The guitar I'm looking at getting Schecter Damien Elite 8. I've never played a Schecter I didn't like the sound of so I can only assume after reading reviews it would be good. I'm aware it is peoples equipment that makes the sound either shitty or fantastic.
So the bottom line is, I can get the guitar for £400, should I buy a guitar over the internet without actually playing it 1st?
Is playing an 8 string much different to playing a 7?
Any other general advice would be helpful.
I've only tried 8-strings in a shop, and I own a 7-string. I had literally no idea what I was doing on the 8 string. Probably takes a few moments to get used to. Worth noting is that I hadn't even tried 7-string Ibanezes before I bought mine online and I got used to it pretty fast, so I say go for it. It's only 400 quid.
The Damien elite is beautiful but it's downside is the 26.5 scale, which tuning would you like to play in?
Also take a look at this 800$ schecter that came out this year (28 scale, good string tension and stability because of that)

I've got a completely unused Damien Elite 8 which I'm incidentally trying to sell.
However, I've never been able to adapt to how wide the neck is. I just don't have the time to play it enough to get used to the extra width between strings etc. (Hence why I'm looking to sell)
It is a beautiful guitar. However, it will definitely need a real set up, the fret buzz out of the box is horrific (or was in my case) and the strings slap around like crazy. Needs a good set up, and then it will take a few months to get used to it.
(Also if you are interested in buying it and or discussing buying mine drop me a PM) It's a red schecter damien elite 8. http://www.schecterguitars.com/Products/Guitar/Damien-Elite-8.aspx

That one looks clean as hell. I'll have to check it out

I contacted the seller and the guitar was re strung and setup last month. It's tuning is F#BEADGBE I believe. Its standard I think. I can't see myself changing it. After all I'd still have my 7 to mess around on.
The string gauges go from .12 to.80 as well I think. If that makes a difference.
I have a Schecter Omen 8 and I'm loving it. Cheapest 8er you can get (unless you live in the states, in which case an Agile might provide a better bang for the buck), solid build quality and decent sounding pickups. The 26.5" scale does it justice even for drop E.
I bought it from Thomann. My previous and only guitar was a cheap strat copy. Didn't take long to get used to.
what is the point of anything more than 6 strings? I'm just curious because i've never played one and I don't know what there uses are. My cousins friends says the 7th string is just a pain in the neck but I'm sure if you get used to it then its not
If I may suggest, have ago at the ESP-608B. That's probably what I'll buy when I got the cash.

It's a bit pricy, going 1099 - 1499.
Don't buy a cheap 8-string. Those are almost always pure shit. 8-strings are guitars that you gotta throw some money at, but they really give back helluva lot.

More range and variety.

I think that 8 strings sound like crap and feel disgusting but thats just my personal opinion. That being said, alot of people seems to like "Agiles" guitars. I've heard that they are like high-end 7 and 8 strings but cheap.
Here is a link to their 8 string guitars, I've heard alot of good things about the interceptor in particular: http://www.agileguitars.org/agile-8-string-guitars/
Just as an update, I ended up getting the Schecter Damien Elite 8 from Benf199105. He was able to drive it up to me and actually play it for around 45 mins with my setup. I decided to have it. My 7 string downtuned was just not cutting it and this sounds brutal and so much cleaner. Here it is with the other Schecters I own:

Expect to see a video using it in the near future.
