It's often jokingly said that it takes at least three tries to connect an USB-cable. This saying will no longer be relevant when the new connection type "Type C" arrives, as it, much like Apple's iPhone and iPad chargers, can be plugged in both ways. The new USB-standard 3.1 will also give way to much higher transfer-speeds, as well as being able to deliver up to 100W of power, all through the same USB cord. Now it'll acquire yet another feature to slap it's predecessors in the face with. [IMG]http://www.sweclockers.com/image/red/2014/09/22/Alt.jpg?f[0][x]=6&f[0][y]=169&f[0][w]=665&f[0][h]=478&f[0][_f]=crop&t=articleFull&k=5e760802[/IMG] This enables computers, tablets, smartphones, displays, and docking stations to implement the new USB Type-C connector at both ends while using the DisplayPort Standard over USB Type-C to transmit high-resolution A/V along with USB data and power. I will also be possible to use adapters to make it compatible with the HDMI, DVI, and VGA standards. The initial implementations will use the current Displayport 1.2 technology, with 5,2Gb/s per guideway, which together with the USB-cable's four links opens the door for up to 60FPS 4K video with audio transfers. While the cable is used to transfer videos with 4K resolution, it will still be possible to use it to transfer other data with USB 2.0 speeds (480Mb/s). Future incarnations, however, will use Displayport 1.3 with 8.1 Gb/s per guideway bandwidth, which in the same scenario, makes it possible to simultaneously transfer other data at 10.1 Gb/s. Alternatively, you could choose to still transfer the other data at USB 2.0 speeds, which allows the video to be played in even higher resolutions. VESA won't reveal when the first "Displayport Alternate Mode" products may show up on the market, which indicates that the commercialization of the technology is still somewhat distant. Finally no more getting REALLY intimate with the back of my computer
USB monitors will be viable manufacturing choices now. There used to be one prototype/limited edition monitor which used USB as a connector, it barely fitted the 12w margin. Now we will have one less jack to worry about.
I wonder if we could have USB connector done like one of these 4 contact jacks. [t]http://i.imgur.com/u6TdWd4.jpg[/t] Would be basically the best thing.
I wonder if we could have USB connector done like one of these 4 contact jacks. [t]http://i.imgur.com/u6TdWd4.jpg[/t] Would be basically the best thing.
The plug geometry isn't optimal for high frequency transmission.
How does it fare with apples thunderbolt?
Finally no more getting REALLY intimate with the back of my computer
B..but that's the best part
How does it fare with apples thunderbolt?
Come on, you can Google that yourself instead of just having one of us do it for you. Lazy bastard :v:
This is going to mean another motherboard upgrade, isn't it... Unless it doesn't become that widely used. I feel like USB 3.0 still hasn't picked up enough attention.
Come on, you can Google that yourself instead of just having one of us do it for you. Lazy bastard :v:
Well it says 20 gigabits so I dunno if that's true or not.
This is going to mean another motherboard upgrade, isn't it... Unless it doesn't become that widely used. I feel like USB 3.0 still hasn't picked up enough attention.
you look in the wrong places
Yeah USB 3 pretty much is in everything now.
Imagine the day where every single component on your computer connects together using something like USB, creating a large rectangle made from smaller ones. This looks really damn cool, things like external GPUs and monitors could be considered practical with this sort of thing.
Wait.... So if a television has USB 3.1, I can use displayport and do 4K @ 60hz? Oh god yes.
they could be considered practical already if anyone but apple had put any real focus on thunderbolt
they could be considered practical already if anyone but apple had put any real focus on thunderbolt
Well, if Apple didn't negotiate ridiculous licensing agreements with Intel, Thunderbolt could have been a pretty viable standard. But they did, and it's prohibitively expensive to buy a license to produce Thunderbolt-compatible products unless you're Apple, or affiliated with Apple.
How does it fare with apples thunderbolt?
You can't charge your laptop with thunderbolt. Thunderbolt isn't reversible
Those things seem to break incredibly often.
Yeak, jacks are something I'd honestly like to have replaced - at least on mobile phones. A Magsafe (but tighter) solution would be nice; just have it clip onto the side, if something pulls the cord too hard, it'll just free itself without taking damage in the process. I've basically stopped using half-way expensive headphones with my phones because the wear and tear is unacceptable.
Yeah USB 3 pretty much is in everything now.
its in pretty much everything, but i dont think any of the usb sticks ive gotten in the past year are usb3.
its in pretty much everything, but i dont think any of the usb sticks ive gotten in the past year are usb3.
Cheaper USB drives won't have it.
There is a God, and he's an engineer.
usb will be literally universal eventually. one day we will have just 2 cables in our computers. 1 for power, the other for everything ever
Where are those computer science colleagues who laughed at me when I said one day USB will be used for audio and video transfer too ? Oh yeah, they work at Ericsson... well at least I was right.
There is a God, and he's an engineer.
Isn't that pretty obvious either way?
usb will be literally universal eventually. one day we will have just 2 cables in our computers. 1 for power, the other for everything ever
USB can power too lol
usb will be literally universal eventually. one day we will have just 2 cables in our computers. 1 for power, the other for everything ever
100W is more than enough to power laptops and tablets. With a wall socket adapter you could probably make do with just one cable.

[t]http://i.imgur.com/u6TdWd4.jpg[/t] Would be basically the best thing.
Building it to handle all the contacts touching each other as it is plugged in could be tricky to say the least
