(NATIONAL) -- Could it be the U.S. government thinks peaceful, civilian protest against government is fine on the streets of Cairo, Egypt but not on U.S. soil?
As Secretary of State Hillary Clinton gave a speech at George Washington University yesterday condemning governments that arrest protestors and do not allow free expression - and lauding freedom of speech on the Internet - 71-year-old military veteran Ray McGovern was grabbed from the audience in plain view of her by police and an unidentified official in plain clothes and hustled out of the building and, according to McGovern and his supporters, was “brutalized and left bleeding in jail.”
What McGovern did was simply remain standing silently in the audience and turned his back on her as Secretary Clinton began her speech.
That was it.
McGovern, a veteran Army officer who also worked as a C.I.A. analyst for 27 years, was wearing Veterans for Peace t-shirt.
Blind-sided by security officers who pounced upon him, McGovern remarked, as he was hauled out the door, "So this is America?"
According to Mara Verheyden-Hilliard, attorney with the Partnership for Civil Justice Fund, “For this peaceful expression of dissent, he ended up bruised, bloodied, arrested, and jailed. Secretary Clinton never paused, continuing her speech lecturing other countries about the need to allow freedom of expression and dissent, while Mr. McGovern was hauled out in front of her.”
McGovern was later found to have his arm covered with bruises. The metal handcuffs were fastened so tightly that his wrists were cut and some blood flowed from the cuts.
After being held by local police, McGovern was told he was being charged with disorderly conduct.
Watch the incident in the video below.

Irony much?
Which is exactly what the guys on Reddit are arguing. Of course, the people who were at the speech (and consequently are supporters of Hillary Clinton) witnessed this mans silent protest. It's kind of hard to claim that something else happened when there were so many people there who witnessed it. He was in the front row, too.

dictatorship much
What the fuck man
That's stupid, what the hell
There has to be more to this then meets the eye.
yeah
something crazy has to be going on, this sounds unlikely at best

She is fucking smirking as the guy is being taken away.
I mean, if that's all he was doing, peacefully standing with his back turned, then man, we gotta rework our law system.
But I agree with Canuhearme, this doesn't seem to be the whole story.
oh it seems he was yelling pretty close to her and pretty much making it impossible for everyone to hear

I swear I posted this story a few days ago.

You did, this is a different article though. I had no idea this had been posted before, and yeah, I searched. I'm sure you got a certain satisfaction from coming in here to say that, though.
:EDIT:
And your thread was locked too? Why is that?

I didn't hear him in the video until the camera showed him being dragged away.

That's because he wasn't saying a word until he got arrested. I'd be flipping out too. It also gets me that this guy was a veteran member of the CIA. He wasn't there to start shit; that's not really the point of a silent protest.
Hillary Clinton is a fucking skank by the way.
[editline]20th February 2011[/editline]
Yeah, but Treybuchet said that some people are claiming he was yelling and stuff before that.
He didn't say that, did he? And besides, people who were actually there have blogged about this. Same story every time.
Hillary Clinton is a fucking skank by the way.

Yeah, but Treybuchet said that some people are claiming he was yelling and stuff before that.
the only problem with this is that he's pulled this stunt before, more than once
what he does is he goes to this kind of speech thing, front row
he then stands there in peaceful protest
if anyone starts to move towards him, he starts shouting his shit, and the politician, to save face, calls them off and lets him keep standing
Hillary is a royal bitch, she probably had him arrested.
He did it with Rumsfeld too, notably.
He's playing chicken with politicians, to see how far he can push them
I actually kind of dislike him, to a degree

So all this man has to do to get swarmed by security personnel is stand silent/still with his back to whoever is giving the speech. Sure, he flips out once they try to arrest him so he can call attention to what's being done; how is that wrong?

It's not wrong, per se, but it just seems kind of silly and a petty way to do it, it's almost like he's setting up a no lose for him, so the politician can do nothing
options:
1. ignore him: he still gets his message across, but less so
2. start to arrest him, but stop when he starts yelling: see 1, but more so
3. arrest him: become the villain in the story
He had his dick out.

Trying to silence someone who's being completely silent is petty in my eyes. The group he represents is all about freedom of speech, so it says a lot when their silent protestors get swarmed/tackled by security for being entirely silent.

So you disagree with letting people get a message across? :smith: and anyone who arrests a person for trying to get a message across in a non obnoxious way certainly should be seen as the villain.

I didn't post it for any satisfaction. I was stating a point.

You know it's quite possible that I didn't see your thread because it was closed after 18 posts. It was also a different article. I'm glad you came in here to let me know that you posted a thread about this with a different article that was closed shortly after being posted two days ago, though.

The more you know.
I wonder how he keeps getting into these events since he's caused a scene before. One might understand that he's trying to protest Clinton's policies, but a speech about Egypt's freedom isn't the place to do it.

I'm glad that you're getting pissed over something trivial like a news story. Change out of your diapers and put on your big boy pants, then we'll talk.

Uh, yeah. ಠ_ಠ
the people who get this close to high-up politicians are probably briefed on conduct or at least given some ground rules. What with how careful the secret service is about assassination risks I doubt quickly standing up a short distance away from the secretary of state is considered kosher
