They are culturally similar enough to the western world that an alliance is possible. The PA is simply going to be too alien to work with and it will, inevitably, lead to further conflict and death. Both sides do terrible things, we just happen to work better with one over the other. I generally back certain Kurdish groups for similar reasons. They adopt western ideals, which means we gain common ground for negotiations and alliances.
