To study human behavior free of at least some of these constraints, the researchers analyzed how male and female avatars in the virtual, 3- dimensional world of Second Life dressed. Second Life offers users options to choose the gender, appearance and attire of their virtual avatars, and users can select clothing from several items created in this virtual world, rather than being restricted to a predefined costume. They found that out of over 400 virtual people studied, 71% of male avatars covered between 75-100% of their skin, while only 5% of females did. In contrast, 47% of the virtual females they studied covered between 25-49% of their skin, compared to 9% of males. The amount of skin covered was independent of traditional gender-specific measures of physical attractiveness for virtual avatars, such as waist-chest ratios for females. According to the study, "These findings have implications for understanding how sex specific aspects of skin disclosure influence human social interactions in both virtual and real settings." Guitton adds, "Virtual settings provide a unique tool to study human behavior unhindered by physical and environmental constraints. This tool enabled us to find a dramatic gender difference in the propensity to disclose naked skin." uh they aren't really women you know
Yeah that's probably because 90% of the female avatars are guys ogling their bodies.
I don't know much about Second Life, but are the clothing options gender specific?
I don't know much about Second Life, but are the clothing options gender specific?
Nope. You can wear pretty much anything. One of my friends run about with a giant whale as a hat before.
1. A lot of them were probably guys. 2. Those avatars typically considered physically unattractive probably still showed skin due to that being some guy's specific preference or a girl with that kind of body shape having confidence in her appearance and showing it online. These results fail to surprise me.
I wonder if at any point the people compiling this data had to chose whether to include or exclude anthropomorphic and misc characters into their study. Like at some point in time a group of people came together and said; "Sorry, look, we can't include anything but humans at this point. Get rid of all the other data."

Yeah it seems like with the furries in SL, even the guys show a lot of skin. :pwn:

Hahaha who in their right mind would analyze second life for research? Seriously that world has gone so fucking weird its incredible. I mean for fucks sake look at this shit.
HAHAHAHAHAHA Also, it's awkward enough that people do this in SL at all but when they actually do it with voice chat and have a real, live person talking them through a virtual birth and repeating "push push push", it just ramps the awkward up ten fold. I bet that person isn't even a real doctor either and doesn't actually know jack shit about the birthing process. I hope not, anyway. I strikes me as a little sick that a medical professional would ever do this in their free time.
it's a fucking game holy shit what the fuck

I checked it out and they literally had people sitting and watching this one monotone guy preaching through his mic. At the time, it wasn't really funny but rather disturbing. It was just all these emotionless clean cut christian players just siting there staring blankly at the equally lifeless preacher.
it's a fucking game holy shit what the fuck
Uh, games have proven to be helpful for research in the past This kind of research is a joke though, since of course females are gonna show more skin because fat females can just adjust their e-bodies to whatever they think is "hot" and so will dudes with female avatars, so of course they show more skin
Hey what's the freaky open source version of Second Life?
In Second Life I can express my true inner-self rrerr

I'd think it would be seen as the devil incarnate to them.
Virtual women reveal more polygons, regardless of body proportions.
fixed
man, second life is fucking weird. it's sort of a perfect example of how you can give people the ability to do anything, and to make anything, and all they'll do and make is creepy sex things by a certain point.
Did you know that "rrerr" isn't funny anymore?
Eh, who named you Arbiter of All Which Is Humorous?
should have done a survey of people who play as what they are in real life. Results would have been more interesting.
Why would devout Christians be playing second life? I'd think it would be seen as the devil incarnate to them.
I actually used to go to some sort of youth group things on SL from time to time, I don't believe in any of it but it used to be interesting to at least listen to how crazy some of it was, though I acted in a respectful manner to all of the people running it. Also, most people assume all females in SL are guys at all times. It feels like the opposite to me. Most of the females are females I find, or at least definitely sound and look like them, problem is most of them are also in their 60's or if they're around my age they are extremely socially awkward. As sad as I feel saying this, I met one of my first real girlfriends through SL and we met up a few times and things were actually fairly normal so not everyone is a complete freak, not really into the whole scene anymore though.
Tits/Ass ratio.
buying your fire and rezzing it in Curious is this a bad idea y/n
It shouldn't spread unless the sim is setup to allow it. But shit sometimes happens.
