Hi. My friend is a hobbyist photographer. He stopped a few months back and we are trying to convince him to get back into it. He hates alot of his photos so if you could offer some encouraging words or some constructive criticism it would really help boost his confidence. Why try to force him to go back?
There's nothing wrong with his pictures per-se, he just needs a lot of practice and find something interesting to photograph. The best advice I can offer is to go out as friends on 'photography trips', bring your own camera, even if it's only a little point and shoot.
Well, OBVIOUSLY, he isn't a great photographer because he doesn't have the best equipment. Everyone knows that you need the most expensive stuff to actually get good pictures
He's right. Unless you paid AT LEAST a years poor mans wages on just your flash, just give the fuck up.
Don't even get me started on battery grips. Every respected photographer needs atleast two of those
It's also essential to buy an f/1.0 lens or bigger- the depth of field is so shallow nothing is in focus if you take a photo from less than 2 meters from the subject! Imagine that BOKEH
Pff f/0.70 is where it's at.

I personally liked the cemetery and pond pictures. I think the snowy cemetery would b e a little cooler at night though, to help go with the gloomy mood of a cemetery covered in snow. You can also try to encourage him to take photos of different things that aren't nature if he's gotten bored with that. I personally autocross and know the photographers at the car racing events have a blast (but then again that could just be because they might be gear heads as well).
Looking at your deviantart, I can't tell if you're being serious or not.
