It's a device that many people have, and can be used for gaming, so it's a great platform for making games.

It's not animated yet so he's stuck with a :D face.
Wasn't there supposed to be a map editor for the console version of Crysis 2?
I previously said that I will buy Crysis 2 the minute the Sandbox editor is released for it and I plan on standing by my word

iOS gaming is great if it's done right.
This game, by epic games, was absolutely fucking brilliant. It had decent gameplay, was re-playable for ages. It's graphics were pretty amazing too, considering the device it's on.
Going on further into this, why the fuck shouldn't they bother going mobile? Another step towards mobile gaming would be great. Just because "Apple sucks", that doesn't mean they shouldn't go towards supporting a wider range of devices.
Dear god FP'ers are so single-minded when Apple comes into the story.

I hope you can use Crysis assets in the Crysis 2 editor. I kinda miss the jungle setting.

You're joking right? the iPod/iPhone/iPad is actually an extremely good gaming platform for games with less demanding graphics. I've played some extremely good racing and shooter games on it.

Except for the fact that I play games on my Ipod Touch all the time, just because you don't doesn't mean it's not a gaming device :jerkbag:
iOS devices are successful enough for gaming that Nintendo saw Apple as a bigger rival than Sony. I think that is evidence enough it can be a gaming device, even if its just Angry Birds.

I got a fucking iPod touch, I tried finding games for it too, there's a shitload of casual bullcrap that shouldn't even be defined as gaming, and if you think its a gaming device because you play on it all the time, you're a casual too who needs to stop getting his ass licked by the industry.

I bet you you played good shooter games on it, with those super-accurate controls and really responsive interfaces and such, yea. I played some extremely good shooter games on consoles, too, like Black Ops, but not really, because consoles and touch devices are not suited AT ALL to that genre.
And if you want to play racing games on that because it has that shiny little motion sensor or however its called, fine, and I agree on that one, racing games do work better on the iPod and iPad than on PC or consoles, but hey, if I was really into racing and not just some casual, I'd buy a steering wheel joystick and have the best of all solutions. On PC. With the best graphics too. Or on consoles. With good racing exclusives. Not the god damn ipad.

Let me rephrase that. Apple markets them as gaming devices to get casuals like you to believe they are. But they're not. Apple is lying to you. Who would have expected that from such an honest company.

Because it takes time away from developing and optimizing for platforms that can actually utilize the power of these engines. That's why. Leave casual mobile gaming to Unity. They can handle it.
I might just go into making something out of this, as long as it's somewhat easy to use.
Is that what "Gaming" is to you? Angry Birds?
How about the ton of games that aren't bad, which are more suited to mobile devices. (Zen-Bound 1&2, Plants VZ Zombies, World of Goo, Infinity Blade, Bit-Trip Beat, and a fuck ton more)
Sure, most of these don't require fancy graphics and such but if engines could branch off a bit and support these devices a lot could come from it.
I got a fucking iPod touch, I tried finding games for it too, there's a shitload of casual bullcrap that shouldn't even be defined as gaming, and if you think its a gaming device because you play on it all the time, you're a casual too who needs to stop getting his ass licked by the industry.
Some people like casual games you know. A lot of people enjoy them on mobile devices. There's no problem there. Just because people don't play on these devices all the time doesn't mean that it should be completely ignored.

I agree with you there but you say it like shooters are the only genre available. Shooters are not the definition of gaming.

If you say casual again... You seem to have gone retarded in this section of your post and forgot about the keyword "mobile". I don't think you pull out a steering wheel joystick while waiting for a bus do you? The racing genre is actually a nice example of where some better graphics would be nice to have. It wasn't that long ago that I was sitting playing on a chunky ass'd console which had worse graphics than some of the mobile racing games have now.

Oh hey you said casuals again. Apple isn't lying. There are some pretty nice games out there if you take the time to look for them. They don't advertise the i-Products as a gaming device alone, they only tag it on as one of the ton of things you can do with your device.
It may take some time away but it shouldn't, if done right, change the final product for devices that can utilize the power of the engines. I don't see where the problem is with that. They'll have a bigger user base by branching out, and keeping up with different device types isn't a bad thing, as eventually mobile devices surely will be able to handle what most computers can today.
[editline]22nd April 2011[/editline]
Basically what I'm trying to say is mobile gaming will never get better than "casual" if better engines aren't optimized better to work with the devices.
I remember not being able to run Crysis sandbox or SDK for my lack of a 64 bit OS
All of a sudden, everyone stops bitching and moaning.
All of a sudden, everyone stops bitching and moaning.
Basically what I'm trying to say is mobile gaming will never get better than "casual" if better engines aren't optimized better to work with the devices.
The point is not that mobile platforms won't get past "casual", the point is that they're not supposed to. Apple knows exactly that that type of game is what their audience wants, thats why they promote them.
The problem is that the platforms that are more suited to hardcore gaming(which is the first time I used that because I try to avoid the term, because I think hardcore gaming is what should make most of gaming but thats an opinion thing) are not being given the attention in that field.
The industry is trying to get everything down to a medium level of, from my perspective, a very casual approach to the whole medium of videogames, which had previously been limited to, as you said, mobile platforms and consoles. Those devices have the attention now, and when products designed for the hardcore platforms are trying to walk that small line that also caters to casuals, it straight up annoys me.
I don't want casual gaming to die or something, I want hardcore gaming not to die. And competitive gaming. And I want real competitive gaming back. Not shit like MLG. And that again has to do with what you said, Apple doesn't want to host the ESL Angry Birds 3 International Tournament on iPod touches.
You also made a good point against the racing thing, of course mobile platforms have the huge advantage of mobility(who would have thought), but again, mobility is a very casual approach to gaming. My PC isn't mobile at all, but my xbox is. On the other hand, the PC has more power and more precision. This goes down several notches until we reach your iPad or iPhone. Of course it's more mobile.
And another thing, maybe if better engines are optimized enough mobile gaming can get beyond casual, but at that point hardcore gaming hasn't moved a bit and there's no difference. I don't want the iPod being as powerful as my desktop PC(or Mac *cough* hipsters *cough*).
You also say I generalize gaming with FPS, I wish I could avoid that, but as I said, FPS has become the most popular and the biggest genre of gaming now, sadly on platforms that kill it. That's not my fault nor my opinion. The titles that have been selling the most in the industry are FPS. And they're all CODs.
And I really want to stop typing but I gotta say something about your first statement, there are games that are more suited to mobile platforms. Yea. But we're talking about the CryEngine and the UnrealEngine. Both are primarily (Yes, I know that these are extremely flexible engines with a shitload of genres they support) aimed at shooters, and that's their primary commercial output. Look at UE3. What do we have? One shooter after the other, most firstperson, some thirdperson, some not shooters but firstperson games(Mirror's Edge) and even RPGs like Mass Effect have tons of shooter elements in them.
Keeping up with different devices is a bad thing for the most powerful device in the spectrum, since the engine has to be optimized to a level that fits them all, which is going to stretch the power of the least powerful device and not use the power of the most powerful device at all to suit them all. And the only case in which mobile platforms will catch up with computers is if computers don't make progress, which seems to be a serious issue now, and which I mentioned before I think.
You can't please everybody, you can't make an engine fit every platform. It doesn't work. There's differences, and they need to be seen, and they need to be taken special care of and given special attention. I'm on the hardcore FPS side, I don't want my side of the spectrum dumbed down, like it's been dumbed down by consoles, even more because of Apple's overpriced shiny phones and MP3 players.
And right now, I may seem elitist, I may not give a fuck, I don't see FPS as the only gaming genre, I play RTS too, but RTS are dying, and the only competitive, hardcore RTS right now, Starcraft, is a single gem in a sea of shit. And do you know why RTS are dying? Because people try to generalize, make gaming more accessible to a broader audience. Guess who this broader audience is. Consoles. And guess what genre doesn't work on consoles. RTS.
This is probably the longest single post that isn't a new Thread I've ever posted, but this is really a thing that I'm very passionate about, and I hope I can see your point too, because I have an iPod too, and I know how much easier it is, and how much quicker, but I just don't care for that.
