Source: http://zakitakubu.com/2014/12/09/nico-nico-niii-is-not-allowed-on-paypal/ (I didn't have a reputable enough source for SH)
Twitter account @KhalC204 was trying to pay his friend back the money he owed by using PayPal. Which is a normal thing. Two days later @KhalC204 recieved an email from PayPal. According to the email, the word “Nico-nico-niii” was used in his message while he was paying back his friend and it is apparently a violation of United States regulations of administered by the Department of the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control. @KhalC294’s account is currently inactive because of the use of the word “Nico-nico-niii”.
If a lot of people are using the same phrase (as the article suggests) then it's possible that some automated system picked up on it and assumed there was money laundering going on.
it's obviously a ring of gangmembers who are into lolicon
So now we lose the right to speak rather type certain words. Yeah, people control what we say now.
So now we lose the right to speak rather type certain words. Yeah, people control what we say now.
i think this is just paypal being overzealous
Paypal is grasping for reasons to freeze your account at any given time. It's in their TOS, they can and will freeze your money for the most bullshit reasons they can legally get away with. It happened numerous times with charity donations. Basically, Paypal ist ok if you are only a paying customer. As soon as you are a seller or otherwise want to gain money via paypal, you're fucked.
So now we lose the right to speak rather type certain words. Yeah, people control what we say now.
When did Paypal become the United States government, and therefore in a position to actually harm free speech? I must've missed that election.
PayPal is known to use any excuse to steal their customers' money
Yeah, doesn't mean it's evidence towards the conclusion that speech is now controlled though.
It's like -desu all over again.
"We just want to make sure that you aren't sending a codeword to reactivate a KGB spy, that's all."
"Those damn chinese animus mango communists are taking over our money!"
Someone I know mentioned it on Facebook and mentioned this possible explanation for it. "OFAC is the part of the US treasury department resposible for enforcing economic sanctions. NICO is Naftiran Intertrade Company Ltd., an Iranian oil company. Paypal will be fined fined a huge amout amout by OFAC if they transfer money to an iranian entity, so this is a CYA move by paypal."

it's the yakuza laundering money wake up people
theres legit reasons behind these things. paypal as a company has faced too many lawsuits for them to risk anything. for all they know niko niko nii could be a code for send me a kilo of heroin . this is bad news for me because i often say random crap like shoobee doobi doo da when i do illiict activities over paypal
Having used Paypal for 10 years I really can't say I've ever run across this (when buying, selling or just moving money from one person to another) given that when you treat a money management and transfer service like it is they don't get pissy when they have to file senseless bullshit in their records.
i haven't much used paypal ever, i have an account linked to my banking but i don't see much use in actually using paypal when i can just pay for stuff out of my checkings account via debit online anyway. is there any advantage to using paypal over a debit card online, other than quicker transactions (possibly) ?
If only it was considered a bank in the US
i think this is just paypal being overzealous
they're under intense pressure to crack down on illegal transactions, the system screwing up like this isn't uncommon nor unexpected when everybody is assumed guilty before innocent
