• Clive Palmer hates NBN, loves electric cars
ASPIRING Prime Minister Clive Palmer thinks the national broadband network is a waste of time and Australians should instead be given electric cars. The avid car enthusiast - who owns "about 150" cars worth about $20 million -also reckons Aussies are bad drivers.
While electric cars may be nice, they just aren't a feasible option yet. They aren't feasible in a lot of Australia at least.
I'd say they'd work in small countries or city-states. Tesla motors seem to be doing excellent as well too.
They're not feasible in any place, especially not in large quantities. :v:
Really? Because many city / suburb folk would be perfectly fine with electric cars - you have to remember that something standard like a Nissan Leaf will go 75 miles on a single charge and for anything other than inter-city travel that's enough for pretty much all daily tasks. Personally, all I need is a car that can go about 10 miles either direction to get to any store in the area and an electric car would be perfect for that. Anything else could be spanned by, say, Amtrak or a secondary gas car.
They're not feasible in any place, especially not in large quantities. :v:
We have a Volt and use it to get to the city and back, and almost nothing else. It can go 30-40 miles before the battery gets to 65% or whatever where it will start up the gas engine, while a trip to the city and back is less than 20 miles. We've had it for over a year and I think we've put gas in it once, maybe twice, and it's already covered ~10,000 miles. EVs have been viable for this type of use for probably decades now, considering how stagnant battery tech has been.
At the moment, I personally feel electric cars will pollute just as much as oil in Australia right now. I'd be more excited with better battery technology(which I think is coming) and getting away from coal mining for power. I'd drive an electric now if this idiot was buying me one though.
I don't mind Clive, but clearly he's just a fat old goon who doesn't much like technology, most likely because he can't use it properly and it just makes it easier for people to share the bad things you do. "I can't make this work therefore it's shit". My dad actually cleaned one of Clive's properties a little while back and it had this massive underground basement just jam-packed full of classic Model T Fords and things like that... Clive's a total old school bloke.
