Wait a second, I haven't watched Chappie or this yet, but isn't chappie basically Robocop? A police robot that learns to be human = A police "robot" that regains humanity. The evil robot that looks like Ed -209 created by someone who wanted military contracts. [editline]edit[/editline] Yeah the HITB crew got that feeling as well, "Robocop mixed with short circuit" That sounds terrible.
Oh god the Jay is gay joke is getting official now.
Yeah the HITB crew got that feeling as well, "Robocop mixed with short circuit" That sounds terrible.
It's definitely an issue, the tone completely shifts about half way through the movie from cutesy short circuit stuff to ultraviolent robocob stuff. It's still an enjoyable movie though.
ED 209 is connected to the Wolverine via Cerebro. I lost my shit.

i hope people don't completely write off Neill Blomkamp as another Shyamalan cos i think he largely remains a skilled director, he just needs a talented writer who can refine his concepts but still has enough guts to tell him when he's got too many to put in one film. he gets far too ahead of himself with it all and it feels like he's making it up as he films it
i enjoyed chappie. i wouldn't say it was well rounded, because it didn't have particularly great cinematography and pacing. but i enjoyed the character development and artstyle a lot [editline]9th March 2015[/editline] though i have never seen district 9 or elysium so i have nothing to compare it to when it comes to neill's work
I knew it was gonna be bad, but I want to watch it just because Die Antwoord are in it.
I knew it was gonna be bad
ugh
Seems like D9 will be his one hit wonder for quite a while.
Seems like D9 will be his one hit wonder for quite a while.
He has talent, its just he's using it not very well it seems.
I loved the movie and I'd strongly recommend it. To each their own I guess.
Well Brad Jones from the Cinema Snob and his buddy liked it.

Elysium was such a huge disappointment after D9, but it was still kind of good. Chappie was terrible when I saw it. Like, nothing could prepare me for how absolutely boring and uninteresting the movie was for me when I saw it. It fell apart so fast from my expectations. Go see District 9 if you liked Chappie, you won't be disappointed. It's the same movie except better, essentially. [editline]8th March 2015[/editline]
He has talent, its just he's using it not very well it seems.
He needs to have someone else write for him. District 9 was good because the plot was written with the letter; apartheid was a real terrible thing that happened that's not talked about a lot, so it's a great and refreshing thing to have for a movie plot. No extra writing necessary. With Elysium and Chappie, I'm just feeling his lack of writing skills is showing. He NEEDS to find a good writer.

Elysium was honestly pretty bad.
I watched all of Blomkamp's stuff before D9 was even a thing, like Alive in Joburg, Tetra Vaal, and Tempbot. When D9 came out and it was amazing it was awesome. Unfortunately, Blomkamp seems to be not doing so hot.Elysium wasn't horrible but it was a generic everything inside of an interesting universe. Aesthetically it was pleasing but it lacked everywhere else. I haven't seen Chappie but from what I have seen it feels like this will be the same. It's interesting to note that D9 was just a higher budget, grander-focus Alive in Joburg. Chappie also looks exactly like the robots in one of his shorts, I don't remember if it was Joburg or Tmpbot or Tetra, but what I'm getting at is that he's just reusing the same concepts he's been using and the same general assets and designs for ten years. He could do amazing work but I'm kind of afraid he's going to be stuck making sub-par movies about dusty grungy impoverished areas featuring South Africans and Shartlo Copley with a rusty robot/alien motif. I'm thinking that the new Alien film will be a good change for him because it totally removes him from that element, and gives him something new to work with.
Just like Skyrim was Fallout with swords amirite
Skyrim was fallout:NV without guns, fallout:NV was fallout 3, fallout 3 was oblivion without colors and with guns.
District 9 was good and thought provoking. Elysium was honestly pretty bad.
Elysium had the dumbest and most juvenile ending ever. Never before had I left a theater and thinking how hamfisted and overbearing the message of a movie was, but Elysium was the one to do it. And this is coming from a guy that fucking LOVED District 9 back when it released.

Fingers crossed.

It's just taking a ton of robot movie scripts and putting them together into a movie that doesn't really know what it wants to be.
Yeah it's got a little bit of iRobot in it too, which is why it seems to be all over the place. It's the puppet boy who wishes to become a real boy. It's the same story in different tones and formats Golem/puppet/robot has human tier sentiance and emotion Golem/puppet/robot feels compassion, is misunderstood and judged Golem/puppet/robot overcomes this all and either becomes human/a real boy or is accepted as human even bicentennial had that same story. As amazing as it was, all it is, is a scifi Pinocchio story with frosting and funny jokes or sad moments and that's it.
holy hell how did I get irobot from that post, I'm a dummy because it's late [editline]9th March 2015[/editline] still, the trailer does have a lot of irobot from it but every robot story like this is the same. It's the puppet boy who wishes to become a real boy
Yeah I was wondering where you got that from my post honestly, but I saw what you meant, it does have a small amount of iRobot mixed in with all of it's other themes, which again is why as a movie it feels so... Jumbled.
iRobot had service droids/robots, and was about a robot breaking the 3 laws of robotics and gaining sentience causing a [sp]huge technological revolution in robotics and how they are treated from what I remember[/sp]
You talking about the movie? Because the movie was mostly about some main central computer deciding that taking control away from the humans was the best way not allow them to come to harm.
You talking about the movie? If someone wants an actually good robot AI story thing then I recommend Choice of Robots http://store.steampowered.com/app/339350/ . It's a choose-your-own-adventure book not a movie, but at least it's well made. Watching chappy I was thinking that I could be reading this instead
I haven't seen the movie, just trailers and it seems Chappie is exactly what I got from those videos. A mess of themes. I want to see it though. I liked Elysium but it was such a wasted potential.
