This will be a brief digression for some notable overseas updates. And the big news is the jaw-dropping $94.3 million Fri-Sun opening in China for Resident Evil: The Final Chapter. The sixth and allegedly final installment of the long-running video game-based franchise snagged a near-record $33m opening Friday, behind (adjusted for exchange rates) only Furious 7 ($62m) and Warcraft ($45m) among top opening days for a Hollywood import. But the film didn't slow down, earning a superb 2.85x weekend multiplier, implying a certain amount of fan satisfaction and potential legs for the $40m Sony/Screen Gems release. Of note, the release in China was handled by Constantin Film partner Leomus Pictures. The Paul W.S. Anderson-directed zombie-killing action-er, starring Milla Jovovich had earned just $26m stateside, well below the $40-$62m respective domestic totals of the first five features. But heading into the weekend, it had $140m worldwide, which means that this insane China debut puts the film's global cume at $238m worldwide. That means, give or take how much of that money the studio gets, the film has already earned back nearly six times its production budget with potentially more to go. It also puts it within striking distance (not adjusted for inflation) of the $240m worldwide cume of Resident Evil: Retribution (chapter five from 2012). Unless it drops dead from this point onward, and that's an open question, we're probably looking at a $300m+ worldwide total putting it above the franchise's highpoint of Resident Evil: Afterlife ($300m in 2010, the first to be in 3D and less than a year after Avatar). Yes, the game has a huge fanbase with a long history and yes the existence of a balls-out horror movie is somewhat rare in China (the film was cut down by seven minutes via state censors), but this is still a monster win for the monster franchise. We'll see how it hold up against fellow "one last ride" sequel Logan which opens day-and-date in China and North America next Friday. Oh, and 20th Century Fox and Regency's Assassin's Creed also opened this weekend in China with$17.3 million. That brings its worldwide total to around $230m. An estimated $37m China cume will help push it past $250m worldwide. It'll probably double its $125m budget by the end, but a cheaper film might have made this into a would-be franchise.
Fuck You It's Year continues Forbes
I can't wait for the sequel.
At least it bombed over here, I saw it 2nd day of showings and it was totally deserted except for like 1 family. It was truly awful.

I stopped paying attention to these movies after extinction. never have I held a game-based movie series so low in regard. [editline]27th February 2017[/editline] aren't these movies just an excuse for the writer's wife to have something to do at this point?
Resident evil movies have always been schlock. I don't really understand why people are just now catching on

China: Why Hollywood stopped caring about quality. No, seriously. What incentive is there to put effort into a good movie to get Americans into the theater when you can shit out garbage for the Chinese audience that'll watch anything with no standards of quality?
How many People watch the CGI movies though, because the next CGI movie takes place Between 6 and 7. why does china have bad taste in film
why does china have bad taste in film
Part of it is probably to do with the fact that they only get access to a handful of Hollywood films every year. Plus their population is more than four times that of the US so box office takings are always going to seem inflated by comparison.
Can we reboot it but good and based on the games. Or set in the canon of the games like the CG movies, and good.
are you guys ready for the monster hunter movies from the same director
are you guys ready for the monster hunter movies from the same director
Fucking kill me.
are you guys ready for the monster hunter movies from the same director
so monster hunter is all about the balance of nature and civilization and shit but let's throw all that in the trash and make the monsters evil and invade the real world because reasons
why does china have bad taste in film
They often don't speak English, so they prefer films with simple/no story and a lot of action because they can still follow along. Why they like films with shit action I don't know.
I can't wait for the sequel.
If there wasn't already an Afterlife, they would call it that Resident Evil: Epilogue Featuring a random appearance by the Bakers
Resident evil movies have always been schlock. I don't really understand why people are just now catching on
Wasn't there an animated one that was decent?
Wasn't there an animated one that was decent?
There are 2 CG ones, they're not amazing but they're definitely miles and leagues above the live action ones and they actually fit into the story of the games.
There are 2 CG ones, they're not amazing but they're definitely miles and leagues above the live action ones and they actually fit into the story of the games.
They're also releasing a third with Chris "Beef" Redfield.
There are 2 CG ones, they're not amazing but they're definitely miles and leagues above the live action ones and they actually fit into the story of the games.
Sitting through The Room is a more fulfilling experience than the Resident Evil live action schlock. So it's not exactly something to be proud of.
Oh come on, 1 is decent and 2 is okay.
Up to the point where she goes full godmode, the series is enjoyable at best. Lasts for two movies though, as you said. The rest is a fuckton of ludicrous battles against monsters or mutant boss things, and overreaching plots made by Umbrella that seem harder to accomplish than a regular world domination. [editline]27th February 2017[/editline]
Starring Milla Jovovich.
Please no. Like, it's not that I like MH. I just hate Jovovich so damn much. People say Scarlet Johanson is lifeless, but goddamn is Milla such a rock.
