• I Started A Band..

So let's begin with how it all started. I was listening to my mom yell at me about how my grades suck  and I needed to do something to keep me motivated. I originally told her I would figure it all out eventually and went to my room and listened to music. Whenever I'm bored and have nothing to do I pick up my guitar and i play/sing punk rock songs. So I called up some friends, and started a band. My original plan for the band was to be an alternative band with very simple riffs and chord progressions. My friends weren't really up for the idea and wanted a more hardcore approach, so I gave in and told them I wanted a sound like Four Year Strong or Set Your Goals and they were down for the idea. During lunch me and my drummer overheard that Chance was looking for a drummer. I immediately told my drummer he should be in both bands, but we found out that Chance was just trying to form a band and so we let him into ours :3: . On Sunday we're jamming at Chance's house for the first time and i'm going to need some help with the basics of song structure. For example, would a rhythm guitarist just repeat the main riff? and a lead guitarist play the less/more important parts? I'm really confused on this subject and would like some help.
Well, I don't know about punk rock, but generally the rhythm guitarist plays a simple, repetitive riff. Sometimes the lead guitar will mimic the riff, usually on a different octave or scale, sometimes with slight variation. When it comes to a solo, obviously the lead guitar usually does the solo, with the rhythm guitar playing either the same riff or a different riff (still repetitive) though. Keep in mind that this is drawn from my experience with extreme metal, and from my own little compositions. I have no idea how true they actually are. :v:
Learn Melodic Minor Read a book Play Progressive Music
Don't say you're going to sound like a band, have your own sound.
Holy shit did he just say something useful and intelligent? Armageddon is approaching
Holy shit did he just say something useful and intelligent? Armageddon is approaching
To the bunkers, people!
im in spanish class right now and my drummer is being a little girl and saying that him and my screamer are starting a band
Rhythm guitarist plays the main rhythm of the song and helps hold time. Lead does widdley shit. Excuse me while i put on my flame suit.
My friends weren't really up for the idea and wanted a more hardcore approach, so I gave in and told them I wanted a sound like Four Year Strong or Set Your Goals
Four Years Strong and Set Your Goals are hardcore?
We're learning some few songs for a party. I am the drummer. Maybe after the party we would start making our own songs.
Four Years Strong and Set Your Goals are hardcore?
Post-Hardcore, but definitely not Hardcore Punk. The Bad Brains would be sad. :saddowns:
They're more like punk-rock.
So, you started a band. And you want advice? I dunno, write stuff and show it to your band mates. If they like it, just let it grow into a song. Rinse, repeat.
im in spanish class right now and my drummer is being a little girl and saying that him and my screamer are starting a band
No band should ever have to refer to their vocalist as a "screamer".
No band should ever have to refer to their vocalist as a "screamer".
Especially if you're a quote unquote "punk" band. Extreme metal, then I can understand. Though the term "vocalist" seems better. If you have two vocalists, harsh and clean, then use those terms "harsh vocalist"/"clean vocalist". If you have two vocalists, screams and growls (or any other combination of extreme vocal styles) well... I don't know then. I guess you'd have to use "screamer". :v:
Apparently they are trying to start a seconday and be in both
Damn, I'm confused. . .
im in spanish class right now and my drummer is being a little girl and saying that him and my screamer are starting a band
Stop calling members of the band yours for a start. You don't own anyone.
Stop calling members of the band yours for a start. You don't own anyone.
Calling them "the drummer" and "the screamer" would sound stupid
make a list of questions that you have, its easier than picking them out of the three paragraph essay then i'll answer them
You should start a ska band.
Lead guitarist / rhythm guitarist interplay can vary greatly. Generally, one will be playing the harmony (chords, arpeggios, power chords, whatever), while the other will doodle little melodies over it. Unfortunately, this usually leads to one of them playing simpler parts. I really admire bands that have two guitarists, but aren't constricted to rhythm and lead. Like Sonic Youth, or Death Cab For Cutie. It inspires me, knowing that you can do more interesting things with two guitarists than simply power chords / riffs.
Calling them "the drummer" and "the screamer" would sound stupid
He means say "our drummer". Also, don't freak out if the band doesn't work out. It probably won't. My first band didn't. In fact, none of my bands have. But they all have made me a better musician, and lately my stuff with my friend Will has been getting pretty good. In my opinion it's much easier to work, write, and record with one really good friend than it is to get three people to agree on shit. Whatever though, I think if I ever do get in a real band I'll be writing the music for it.
im in spanish class right now and my drummer is being a little girl and saying that him and my screamer are starting a band
Then I wouldn't be in a band if they're acting like that they sound like little babies.
by the looks of it, it's going to end just as quick as it started
i kicked our drummer out of the band and our screamer left also , so now it's just me and two good friends :D.
Well that was quick.
And it's gone.
Now I can say I'm so indie that I was a fan of a band that lasted only one day.
Play your own, make a sound no one has before!
Actually get around to writing some music. Also, this sounds more of a distraction then a motivational thing...
