Volvo's automated convoy system, daddy lets go of the steering wheel behind a truck

I get a little uneasy when it comes to hugging a truck, though the fuel efficiency would be a huge plus.
I can imagine combining this with google car to obtain long distances.

also reminds me of this song...
>leave request sent
NO ONE LEAVES THE CONVOY MOTHER FUCKER
Using a truck for the lead vehicle doesn't sound like the best idea. Also they shouldn't advocate, "Hey now you can screw around with your kid while the car drives", as a perk of using this system.
cool idea, hard to implement.
would never trust this one second
even if it worked perfectly I'd still shit my pants
sound like something out of Irobot.
What's the point of the request thing? Why would you need to request permission to drive behind someone?

Well you're going to be using them as a guide, so i'm sure they'd like to know you're auto-convoying them..

Why should they care? It's your responsibility to see where you're going.

SO YOU CAN LET GO OF THE WHEEL? Did you miss the whole point of this video?

don't worry, it's a volvo.
So what happens when they don't let you leave the convoy?
I'll start up a leader thing and hold all the people hostage :v:

I love it. You can be a fair distance back and still get a decent boost in mileage when you're drafting off one. Plus they have a much longer stopping distance than your average car, so if you're on the ball you might not die. Or at least, that's the justification you (I) can give yourself (myself) for tailgating an 80' long behemoth.
And I like how he has to send a request to officially leave the convoy. Like leaving the lane or slowing down isn't enough.

That's not about just the car taking you where you want to go, it's supposed to be about you not needing to hold the steering wheel on the time just to make sure you don't swerve off the lane you're in.
The downside is you can only go as fast as that massive fucking lorry.

It's probably there so that, if there's 2 cars behind you, they'll be able to let you leave safely.
I'm so confused, so this requires the trucks to have the software as well I'm assuming?

This would be really cool though, hopefully all car manufacturers start using this, though I'd imagine automatic driving cars will be released before all the manufacturers agree on a standard :v:
Where was the mom?
What if the truck crashes?

They're adopted.

It's so you know why you have some asshole tailgating you
- enter convoy mode
- go to sleep

I know this isn't the reason the developers intended it for but it would be useful for stopping pirates.
If anyone could join without requesting they could start to automatically follow a truck, crawl around onto the bonnet of their car, set up a boarding plank to the truck and then loot all the cargo without needing anyone at the wheel.
I wish road pirates were real.
As amazing as this could potentially be, I'm not sure I'm ready to sit in a speeding tin can and let a computer tailgate for me. There are too many unknowns. What if the car in front crashes or has to swerve out of the way of some unforeseen danger? What if a tire pops or there is a mechanical malfunction? What if you get cut off by another vehicle or you get left behind at a traffic stop. Under ideal conditions I'm sure something like this could potentially work, but otherwise I think there are a lot of problems that need to be ironed out first.

What makes you think that a human would be more dependable to operate a speeding tin can? Which one has better reflexes, has more accurate control over the vehicle, is unaffected by tiredness and stress and has to be tested thoroughly in simulations and in practice before being allowed on the road: a machine or a human?

That sounds awesome.
"Yarr! We be pirates of the seven highways!"
New form of kidnapping.
'Request received to leave'
"Fuck that, Coming with me bitch!"
Scary.
I don't trust the sensors in cars enough for something like this.
I have no doubt that the on-board computer could easily handle something like this, but computers only mistakes under a couple of conditions, one of which is shitty data.
At the end of the day, those sensors are going to be made by the lowest bidder.
That is not cool..
I trust a computer to drive a car far more than a human.
Luckily this system seems to be a computer driving your car to follow a truck driven by a human. Users get to trust both!
