A couple of days ago we posted a short film from the young Uruguayan filmmaker called Panic Attack!, which had been spreading across YouTube like wildfire and attracting a lot of attention in Hollywood. Now we have news from the Uruguayan newspaper El País that Alvarez has signed a contract with Sam Raimi’s production company and is set to make his feature film debut with a $30 to 40 million science-fiction film. Clearly they are hoping this will be the next District 9… but can he deliver? While the original article is in Spanish, the loose translation also tells us that Raimi spoke with Federico Alvarez on the phone for an hour and a half and the two seemed to hit it off. The idea would be for Raimi to shield him from the business side of things in order to give him the freedom to make the movie he wants (not unlike how Peter Jackson helped mentor Neill Blomkamp). The film will be shot in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and Montevideo, Uruguay. It’s unclear if the story will be based partially on Panic Attack!, but the project was hastily developed over Alvarez’s two week whirlwind trip to Los Angeles, and it sounds like he wants to include robots in some way. Either way, it should be interesting to see what comes of this. As I’ve mentioned previously, I think District 9 is a great production template to work from and I hope we see studios taking chances on a few more young filmmakers in the near future. (Thanks to Nico for the heads up!)
Sauce - The Film Junk The short film itself: I really enjoyed the short film. While this are exciting news, I'm sure Fede Alvarez will be able to put out something very, very interesting as long he has the right guidance. We can imagine, a 2+ hours long movie isn't the same as making and directing a 5 minutes short film so he's probably going to need some help with that. Now, what's going on with Hollywood? Now they're just "recruiting and training" wannabe directors (see District 9)...
Oh hell yes. And I love the 28 Weeks Later music he put with it. That was pretty cool.
Because these YouTube directors sometimes have a shitload of talent among the crapfest of bloggers and trolls. I can see this becoming something great. I might see it when it comes out.
I can see this becoming something great. I might see it when it comes out.
Me too, I'd like to see what guys like Fede Alvarez can bring to the table =) Finally, a step in the right direction, Hollywood... Now ditch the ideas of rehashing old releases and 80's cartoons...
I swear the Car Alarm and Minigun sounds are the exact same ones used in the Left 4 Dead series.
Fookin' UFOs man fook Hopefully it will fookin star fooking Sharlto Copley
Hmmm... He did Spiderman and Spiderman 2. They were alright. Can't wait to see what this will turn out to be
That looks pretty damn cool
Now, what's going on with Hollywood? Now they're just "recruiting and training" wannabe directors (see District 9)...
I think I like it better that way.
Hollywood better not fuck this up
story better be damn good from sam
I swear the Car Alarm and Minigun sounds are the exact same ones used in the Left 4 Dead series.
Valve uses open source sounds, a lot of the sounds you hear in their games aren't theirs.
Hollywood better not fuck this up
I wouldn't be surprised if they did.
Hmmm... He did Spiderman and Spiderman 2. They were alright. Can't wait to see what this will turn out to be
You know. He's more famous for Evil Dead. And justly so.
Now, what's going on with Hollywood? Now they're just "recruiting and training" wannabe directors (see District 9)...
that's a good thing. District 9 was amazing. Unless you want another one of your typical modern Spielberg, Bay, or Lucas flicks with more explosions than story, the only people left to turn to are "amateurs". [editline]10:11PM[/editline]
I swear the Car Alarm and Minigun sounds are the exact same ones used in the Left 4 Dead series.
very rarely will you play a game that has all of its sounds created by the developers.
I love Raimi. This looks promising.
I'm so happy Hollywood is starting to take chances on new directors, guys with fresh ideas and a lot of dedication to the craft. It's about fucking time we get out of this rut of sequels, remakes, and book adaptions that the fat cats of Hollywood have been forcing on us because they are too afraid to take a chance.
Big robots are always awesome, hopefully this will be good.
Hmmm... He did Spiderman and Spiderman 2. They were alright. Can't wait to see what this will turn out to be
He also did Evil Dead 2. Which turned out FUCKING AWESOME.
He also did Evil Dead 2. Which turned out FUCKING AWESOME.
This is my BOOMSTICK!
That is Army of Darkness. Not Evil Dead
I swear the Car Alarm and Minigun sounds are the exact same ones used in the Left 4 Dead series.
they're common sound effects, you'd be surprised
That is Army of Darkness. Not Evil Dead
True true, I just like that line and try to fit it in whenever applicable.
That is Army of Darkness. Not Evil Dead
Army of Darkness AKA Evil Dead 3
Who the heck rated me Clock?! I posted this news the same day it came out! :argh:
It was already in the In The News Section a good while before you. Anyway this is really news, it shouldn't go in GD. So you are late, it's true.

So you are late, it's true.
Excuse me, but The thread created yesterday on the News subforum has been posted "14 Hours Ago", while this one reads "4 Days Ago"... even his source page date reads "December 2, 2009 2:29 PM", mine reads "November 27th, 2009", a lot earlier. I ninja'd his ass :ninja:
Hmm I guess you are right. Your thread died 4 days ago and then was resurrected last night/today, after the In The News thread. I wasn't the one to rate you clock though, so don't get pissed at me.
