I'm an atheist living under a christian roof.
My parents are conservative, Republican, and the other day I found out my own mother supports Michele Bachmann...
She knows I'm an atheist and is admirable in not trying to shove religion down my throat. My parents are the kind of sane, yet sadly misinformed people who get their information from dishonest or confused sources. This isn't to say that they don't have a hand in their own mental sabotage; my mother is woefully ignorant when it comes to even moderate science, and this is a woman who came to religion much later in life. More than once we've debated on the feasibility and the benefits of pushing further into sending mankind to space, which she seems to consider both an impossible and pointless task.
Well, at any rate, I try my hardest not to bring up politics in my household. I can hold my own in science and/or theology, but unless the discussion goes to either of those places, politics aren't something I debate very well. We're talking about people who will tell me to this day that Bush is the reason America hasn't had a 2nd 9/11, and apart from the fact that I consider anyone trying to tell people "god instructed me to *insert asinine, unworkable, ineffectual action here* " with a straight face is either handicapped beyond usefulness in their station, or cold, calculating bullshit-artists preying on the superstitions of the stupid, I can't remember or record the details of the thousands of individual atrocities of people in the right wing and tea-party, and without being able to do so I'm going to be steamrolled and look like some ignorant rebel, like I'M the one buying into hype and propaganda of people who have no interest in my interests.
Of everything I've read about Bachmann, I know she's a psychopath. Single-minded and hell-bent on transforming the free world into one big 2nd Salem, where the right to swing my arm ends NOT at another's nose, but stiffly at my sides where their god-man arbitrarily wants them.
Problem is, while two of my best friends are openly gay, and readily accepted and well liked by my parents (like I said, not bad people, nor stupid, but TERRIBLY misinformed) Bachmann's INTENSE anti-gay sentiments only seem to make my mother shrug when I brought them up.
While I don't think it likely that the Tea-Party will have a chance in next year's election, I REALLY don't want to be in a house supporting their regime if I happen to be wrong about that.
Even if it's just offhand, I need to know what DAMNS this woman in the eyes of anyone the least bit reasonable. What is the best evidence available that this lady is a BAD choice, REGARDLESS of your affiliation? Keep in mind, while it sounds futile, my mother was as sickened and dismayed as I was over, for instance, the "Super-Congress" proposal. This is not an unreasonable human being, but I need something compelling.
Like I said, not outright picking a political fight, but if it happens, I need to be able to prove that my reasoning is solid.

Fact is, when people are, without their knowledge, supporting things they WOULDN'T support, had they acquired all the facts, I think it's probably kinder to enlighten them than leave them alone.
In my house, if you even SUGGEST, inadvertently, that you hold a different political opinion, you're likely to be called out by my father. But my father, gets his information from my mother.
Republicans and Tea-Partiers are bad people. If you support what they support, you are not a good person. If you actually believe what they believe, that is.
My parents are NOT. They're confused. They can be corrected, given they see the true face of what they support. Exposure. Transparency. Am I such a fucking DOUCHE because I prefer that people see what's true rather than what's false?
