A Ohio high school soccer player, who was suspended from his team for re-tweeting a pro-pot message on Twitter, is suing the school district over his punishment.
Clear Fork High School senior Jakob Neumann, 18, claims that school administration officials violated his 1st Amendment right to free speech and denied him due process when he appealed their decision, according to the Mansfield News Journal.
At issue is a tweet he posted with a picture that showed a hand holding marijuana next to a disposable lighter, with the caption: “Marijuana is my favorite.”
The teen’s father, Alfred Neumann, explained that the tweet was done outside of a school setting.
“It happened during the summer vacation, on our home computer — and he didn’t make any mention of the school or the team,” he said. “There’s a constitutional issue.”
“I’ve never actually done anything that would get me in trouble,” Jakob Neumann said. “I didn’t do anything that would be illegal.”

According to the lawsuit, Clear Fork’s athletic director, Benji Bethea, charged the senior with violating the district’s morality clause and drug, alcohol and tobacco policies.
Bethea initially imposed a one-year sports suspension, starting Aug. 7.
The lawsuit says Fred Neumann made three requests for his son’s records under Ohio public records laws, but was told by Principal Brown on or about Nov. 1 that acting Superintendent David Ritter had instructed him to destroy records of the disciplinary action.
Neat. A cover up and harassment too.

This makes no fucking sense. If there's no record of it there should be no suspension.
INSTRUCTING YOU to destroy evidence.
wow.
Of course it's Clearfork.
It's funny how rules for what you can/can't announce/say change from high school to college. One guy at my college has a hoodie that says "Smoke meth; hail Satan." :v:

because at college teachers are people who are on the same level as you giving you an education, but in high school kids are taught to treat teachers like they're above them or some shit, like they're superior or whatever.

I go to a less-than-stellar community college. Some teachers still treat me like I'm inferior.
So I guess schools can dictate what you think now? What's next? Suspend a student for having another political ideology than the school agrees with?
Come to where I live, the teachers are relaxed about what you do, it's a really friendly environment here. Every time I read an article about the education systems in other countries I realise that I'm luckier than others.
Hey, my cousin goes here. From what I've heard, they're really strict about anti-drug policies, and generally anything the administration doesn't agree with.
If I want to build a robotic deathbot hellbent on destroying mankind, I wouldn't flaunt my creation all over the social media. That's how you get in trouble by people you know in real life. Rather, I would post my creations under a username and keep private about my real life.
Don't get me wrong here. You heard this type of news story before: some person posts something on the social space that doesn't harm the community as a whole (threats, cyber-bullying, etc. don't count), but there has to be that one guy that finds it intolerable, and punishes said person for doing something outside of their punishment zone. It's silly for the workplace/school to enforce their intolerance policy upon their employees/students outside of their general establishment.

and this is why I'm so anal about making internet profiles about me 100% clean and professional and spot free
besides that it's not like my name isn't that uncommon at least. But "oh, well, its clean I guess" is all I want them to think.
public posts linked to ones self like underage drinking and illegal things(that's not what this is of course! he simply stated his opinion) is the dumbest stuff anyone could possibly post.
Even minor shit, like, you know, posting an opinion, seems to have the ability to harm you. I bet if I posted my very extreme pro LGBT and pro weed views under my name someone could find it.

I got kicked out of Government class once for arguing pro-Republican in a debate, does that count?

Then you get the teachers that go on power trips and actually believe it, and then they wonder why kids don't want to be in school anymore in perfectly good neighborhoods and communities like the one I live in.

There was a Native American kid that got kicked out of class because he was trying to correct a misconception about his culture and the teacher got offended.
High School was literally the worst hell in my life, still have nightmares being in that place

Which explains your avatar how?

its not about my real life me so it doesn't matter
while i'd hardly call "marijuana is my favorite" alongside this picture

politically compelling enough to consider it "pro-marijuana" instead of just downright loving smokin the reefer (which sorta renders a lot of potential legitimacy of the tweet itself moot) the fact that it's a retweet is just flat out silly to punish him for
whats the point of buying nice lighters (like one with sublime on it) because people will just steal them or you'll just lose it.

I'm pretty sure they almost always cost the same amount
The lawsuit says Fred Neumann made three requests for his son’s records under Ohio public records laws, but was told by Principal Brown on or about Nov. 1 that acting Superintendent David Ritter had instructed him to destroy records of the disciplinary action.
big red flag here
If the lawyer for the kids family doesn't win this case(it's open and shut, destruction of evidence and school records is a felony I believe) i'll be really, really surprised.
because at college teachers are people who are on the same level as you giving you an education, but in high school kids are taught to treat teachers like they're above them or some shit, like they're superior or whatever.
Your teachers ARE superior to you in a school setting and should be treated with respect unless they're doing their job poorly or breaking some moral or legal code.
The teachers/administrators in this story are clearly overstepping their bounds, but in general you should give your elders some respect so long as they aren't being dicks or hurting you in some way.
I'm pretty sure they almost always cost the same amount
oh i figured theyd cost more or more effort or something. i only ever see the regular colored bics so I figure you'd have to go out of your way to find special ones.

you do, but they don't cost anything more usually. still wouldn't bother unless i got a pack of them because i lose lighters far too often to care
why is the american education system so fucked up
i'm sure there has been a news thread everyday this week about something bad happening in an american school

Because we don't have nationalized education standards, and literally thousands of different school districts all have their own views. There's barely consistency within a state and there's potentially different school districts within a county. It's fucked.

Pretty much this. Everyone has their idea of what children should be taught in school. Hell, there's still a lot of people pushing to include creationism in our curriculums.
Nobody should be suspended from anything for giving their opinion on something.

Yeah for all the debt we've accumulated and the current state of our economy, I'd say our public service is in a pretty good place. Belgium has a pretty good education system as well.
That's an invasion of his privacy, what cunts.
