The Centres for Disease Control and Prevention reported 288 cases of measles in the first five months of 2014 - the largest number for 20 years.
The outbreak is thought to be linked to US citizens travelling to the Philippines.
The CDC says timely vaccination is the best way to prevent measles.
Dr. Anne Schuchat, director of CDC's National Centre for Immunizations and Respiratory Diseases, said many US healthcare providers had never seen or treated a patient with measles because of the country's robust vaccination efforts and rapid response to outbreaks.
Measles was eliminated from the United States in 2000, meaning that for more than 12 months there was no longer any continuous measles transmission.
...
Of the 288 cases, 280 were thought to have been imported from at least 18 countries.
Ninety per cent of all measles cases in the US occurred in people who were not vaccinated or whose vaccination status was unknown.
More than one in seven cases has led to stays in hospital.
Okay, seriously, this trend is going the wrong direction. I posted a thread to SH six months ago that detailed how the CDC was reporting about 175 cases, which was triple their expected rate. It's almost double that and it's June 1st. Canada's had multiple outbreaks already this year, with 350 in one outbreak alone.
I'd like to remind everyone that measles can and does kill. It's 2014 and we discovered a safe and effective vaccine fifty years ago. If you haven't had them recently, get your fucking vaccinations/boosters unless it's medically unsafe for you to do so, for the safety of your entire community.
This is really getting terrible. If you agree with anti-vaccination, please don't post, it's a toxic, unscientific threat to public health.
I just don't understand anti-vaccination.
I just don't understand anti-vaccination.
people would rather trade for death/disease than being healthy, all because of their beliefs on their children having a tiny percent chance of being retarded.
well the amish here are having problems because of religious beliefs, but ya tons of shit the anti-vaccers have caused
I just don't understand anti-vaccination.
They don't understand vaccination..
...or the fact that chemicals can have other uses.
The worst part is that this fucks over people who cant take the vaccine for some actual good reason, or people too young to have taken it yet
Somebody needs to go to all the parents of the kids that actually die, look them in their eyes, and very sternly and mercilessly tell them they just killed their child and that it's blood is on their hands.
I just don't understand anti-vaccination.
"But it'll make my kid autistic!"
I just don't understand anti-vaccination.
You just don't understand, it causes autism!!! As a responsible parent I have the right to not have my child vaccinated if I choose!!!
I just don't understand anti-vaccination.
People think it's a government conspiracy, so they refuse to take part.
Because you know, it's a conspiracy that you can opt-out of...
they need to watch the P&T Bullshit episode on anti-vaccination

Uh, the problem is that anti-vaccination is not the only reason for kids to skip their vaccinations. Some children are deathly allergic to components of the carrier the vaccine is delivered in, and there's no alternative carrier that works, so they are simply unvaccinated. Vaccines are also not safe to administer to newborns in most cases; the vaccine measles is covered by (MMR) is generally not given to babies until 12 months.
However, there's the concept of herd immunity. If almost everyone is immune to the disease, the chance of it gaining a foothold in the community and spreading to people who are in close contact with people in the small group that can't be vaccinated is very small, and it can usually be controlled or eradicated completely.
If herd immunity drops because of idiots voluntarily not vaccinating, the risk of hitting a pocket of can't-take-the-vaccine-at-all people increases, and you start getting outbreaks. Especially babies.

I really should just put that in the bottom of the OP every time I have a "antivax is causing more disease" thread like this in SH, save everyone time.
"But it'll make my kid autistic!"
"And vaccines contain immense amounts of mercury and all sorts of other poisons!! I should know, Infowars said so!!"
Vaccinations should be mandatory, imo.
well the amish here are having problems because of religious beliefs, but ya tons of shit the anti-vaccers have caused
Well I can understand if the Amish wouldn't like Vaccinations because, ya know, Amish folk.
I just don't understand anti-vaccination.
Too many Tin Foil Hat wearing conspiracy theorist government is out to get me I can pray away my disease types. The government is only out to get your money, always has been, always will be.
i think if some people in my country started recommending not to vaccinate children and dissallow it, the government and healthcare authorities would get involved in it because it's a quite serious illness and it literally kills people.
Even if vaccines caused autism, how is that worse than, you know, being dead?

It's funny because that doctor who said vaccines cause autism got his license revoked and his study retracted
Even if vaccines caused autism, how is that worse than, you know, being dead?
Best case Scenario, you have that high end autism that can be treated with help early in life, to become either a small nothing in your life, or non-existant.
Worst case Scenario, you're severely Autistic, and I've heard of folks that are so crazy, they need to be strapped down and shit.
But no one really knows what type of Autism a kid could get, so that's where the fear starts.
Thanks Jenny McCarthy
snip, PVt. Martin said it better.

I posted that link on Facebook and a couple of people started calling me a retard for thinking vaccines cause autism. I'm not sure if I'm supposed to be happy or sad right now.

To be honest, with the average Facebook user intelligence being less than or equal to 0, I can see why they wouldn't want to click that link.
Thanks Jenny McCarthy
Didn't she say her son pooped out his autism or something
Even if vaccines caused autism, how is that worse than, you know, being dead?
That's one aspect I don't understand... Autism isn't the worst thing, and is far better than the unpredictable effects of preventable viruses/diseases.
Honestly, there needs to be some sort of criminal consequences to being an anti-vaxxer or promoting it. Getting your kids taken because you're endangering them, fines, house arrest with gps tracking (basically quarantine) until your kids are vaccinated, that sort of thing.
Even if vaccines caused autism, how is that worse than, you know, being dead?
That's an angle to this whole thing that really isn't explored enough. Putting your child at risk of death to prevent a (perceived) risk of autism is hugely insulting to autistic people.

I'd call that victory: They judge books by their cover entirely without even clicking (although that URL is huge bait), but they're inoculated against the idea of anti-vaccination itself, so they don't need the website.
