Dad is or was a christian (not sure anymore, he still believes in god but more in a newage alien way) and my mom is a muslim.
They let me decide what religion I wanted to choose, and I didn't choose any (atheist). They didn't disown me at all they just think I'm wrong. Mom was little upset when she asked if I believe in god. But nothing really happened.
I don't know if your parents are extremists. I know my dad isn't extreme. Maybe mom is a little but nothing compared to the rest of her family.
