The Show:
SpongeBob SquarePants (often referred to simply as SpongeBob) is an American animated television series, created by marine biologist and animator Stephen Hillenburg. Much of the series centers on the exploits and adventures of the title character and his various friends in the underwater city of "Bikini Bottom". The series' popularity has prompted the release of a media franchise, contributing to its position as Nickelodeon's highest rated show, the most distributed property of MTV Networks, and among Nicktoons' most-watched shows.[1] As of 2011, SpongeBob SquarePants is the only Nicktoon from the 1990s that has not been canceled yet.
Additional Info:

The basis for SpongeBob SquarePants was formed by Hillenburg in 1984 while teaching and studying marine biology at the Ocean Institute in Dana Point, California, where he wrote the comic strip The Intertidal Zone, which starred various anthropomorphic forms of sea life, many of which would evolve into SpongeBob SquarePants characters. He left the institute to become an animator in 1987, and later attended the California Institute of Arts in 1992. In the institute, he made his thesis film Wormholes (1992), which led to his hiring as a director, writer, producer, storyboard artist, and executive producer of the series Rocko's Modern Life by creator Joe Murray. He started to develop the series in 1996 following Rocko's Modern Life's, and pitched the series to Nickelodeon in 1998 and was later greenlit for a first season.
The pilot episode of SpongeBob SquarePants first aired episodes in the United States on Nickelodeon on May 1, 1999, following the Nickelodeon Kids' Choice Awards. The show reached enormous popularity by 2000 and has remained popular since. A feature film of the series was released in theaters on November 19, 2004. The series celebrated its tenth anniversary on July 17, 2009. SpongeBob was renewed for a ninth season on January 3, 2011.[2] (Note: the definition of season for this show is that more episodes have been ordered for future airing.)
Characters:

He works as a Cashier at the Krusty Krab, a job he dislikes. SpongeBob and Patrick consider Squidward their best friend, though the feeling is not mutual. He is a selfish individual and displays an unjustified air of superiority. He also has a large collection of self-portraits and is delusional about his talents (such as playing the clarinet) though nobody around him considers him to be very good. To wrap things up I just want to suggest to anyone coming into this thread to avoid starting a discussion about why SpongeBob has had a decline in quality. We are all aware of this and I would like to keep the thread clean from it, instead discuss the greater points of the show.
Sadly the show has declined in quality, but this doesn't change the fact that it was, and will always be, a great show. SpongeBob has become a large part of pop culture all across the world and a great hit with parents and children alike. If you don't like the show then I'm sorry, but get the hell out of my thread.
So there you have it, SpongeBob Squarepants. I may update the OP with more information since I only really included Wikipedia copy-pasta and info on characters and the movie. Oh and that reminds me, a huge thanks to Wikipedia and the SpongeBob Wikia for all of the info I ( shamelessly ) stole from them.

I'd say you should only watch episodes from Seasons 1-4. Seasons 5 and up are plain terrible.
it is very unfortunate how disgusting the new episodes are. Now its all graphic and gross.

The splinter episode....
WHY???
Me personally I find the first two seasons to be great. The film was pretty good as well, but after that it just spiraled down into a cesspool of mediocrity.
The original two seasons were well written and had jokes that everyone could enjoy. Spongebob wasn't just a kids show, but it was a generally hilarious show told through animation. Now, it's just to keep Nickelodeon alive.
"Coming up next! 4 hours of Spongebob! After that, 4 hours of iCarly! ONLY ON NICK!"

Great cynical moment.
the marching band episode is still one of my favorite episodes of all time (of any show).
If you post a Spongebob quote as your Facebook status then you will instantly get tons of likes.
If you make a Spongebob joke almost anywhere then nearly everyone will laugh.
Everyone knows Spongebob and everyone likes/liked Spongebob. This show brings people together in a beautiful way.

i love that song just because of the episode, patrick on drums made me laugh because of his square shades. soo good.
This show was incredibly awesome in the first two seasons, but after that, I never found it as enjoyable anymore. Oh well, maybe I just grew up.
