TOKYO — Japanese fans want it known: The radiation-breathing, skyscraper-stomping monster they call “Gojira” was born right here in Japan, 60 years ago.
No matter its evolution in Hollywood over the decades, the Godzilla creature began as an icon for the suffering brought by the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki at the end of World War II.
The new remake, directed by hard-core Godzilla aficionado Gareth Edwards, has become one of Hollywood’s biggest blockbusters this year and finally opens in Japan on Friday.
The Associated Press spoke with some Japanese about their views on how their favorite mutated reptile has changed, including whether they welcome the latest rendition in full computer-graphic glory — so different from their Godzilla, that actor in a rubber suit, who waded into pools and smashed miniature models.

“Godzilla appeals to that destructive instinct that’s in all kids,” says Takeshi Maruyama, a 28-year-old “salaryman,” who grew up on the VS series and has an extensive Godzilla figure collection.
A lot of buildings were constructed while Maruyama was growing up, a period for Japan’s “bubble era” modernization. And it was a delight to see Godzilla destroy them almost as soon as they went up, Maruyama recalled.
One of his favorites is “Godzilla Vs. Mothra,” released in 1992, which showed his hometown of Yokohama destroyed, including Land Mark Tower, one of this nation’s tallest buildings, which was being built as the movie was shot.

“Gareth Edwards brought back our Godzilla, the Godzilla we hold in our hearts. He respects Godzilla,” said Yoshinori Nishizawa, 28, who lives in Tokyo and works in nursing.
“I grew up with Godzilla. I like everything about this movie. It shows the power of Hollywood. I feel only gratitude.”
Japanese fans look on at the suit used in 'Godzilla 2000'
I thought Japanese fans hated that it looked so "fat"?
And why did it premiere so late in Japan of all places?
“I still do not want to call that Godzilla”
Surprising how some people love it and some hate it. Who would have guessed.
I honestly wasn't expecting this.

That quote was referring to the 1998 Zilla, not 2014 Godzilla.
Godzilla always shoots hot radioactive rays from its mouth. It must be powerful. And it must be cool. Emmerich’s Godzilla failed on all counts, he said.
“I still do not want to call that Godzilla,” said Horie, adding that he refers to it as Zilla, something lacking the “God” factor in a Godzilla. “No wonder even American fans called it GINO, for Godzilla in name only.”

I seriously don't get the hate for '98 Godzilla. I thought and still think it was an excellent film.

They made Godzilla look like a dinosaur and gave him velociraptor babies. Before having a news reporter and french mercenaries wipe out the entire lot of the thousands of said babies, then in what's considered easily one of least respectful-to-source-material endings, has Godzilla shot to death by the fucking military. Which is literally the first thing they try and fails miserably in the original.
It's an acceptable creature-feature, but it's not a worthy of the Godzilla title.
To sum it up.

Oh no we lost godzilla in new york, darn that gigantic monster sure is slippery!
Oh no our trap to lure him with fish and shoot him with tiny guns is ineffective, maybe we should have already known this from the other times we shot him with tiny guns and it was ineffective!
Oh no this human pregnancy test says godzilla is pregnant, i know this because i put some monster shit on it!
Oh no godzilla is eating us while we sit in this taxi, thank god he is conveniently missing us and we are somehow not being crushed to death!
zilla' 98 wasn't a bad movie, but it wasn't a really a good godzilla movie.
i still curse it forever for not using blue oyster cult's godzilla anywhere, though.
at least its better than cloverfield
[editline]31st July 2014[/editline]
also the post-credits scene with the egg is the funniest thing ever i cannot watch any movie now without joking that there will be an egg at the end

It was poorly paced, terribly miscast and generally a snore-fest that didn't even give it's main star enough screen-time.
Zilla 98 would of been fine if it was some renamed or remake of The beast From 2000 Fathoms, It did feature one awesome kids show sequel

Other than the TV series, the only other good thing about Godzilla '98 was Jean Reno.
