• Renault Goes Full Retard: Creates Electric Car with DRM in the FUCKING BATTERY
You can't buy a battery for the new Renault Zoe. Instead, you have to rent it. And if you stop making payments, the battery's DRM will prevent you from recharging it. It's part of a larger product strategy through which the Zoe collects huge amounts of data on your driving and ships it all back to the manufacturer.
Sources: http://boingboing.net/2013/11/13/renault-ships-a-brickable-car.html https://blogs.fsfe.org/gerloff/2013/10/31/renault-will-remotely-lock-down-electric-cars/ Fucking idiots.
Give it a week, it'll get cracked.
renault more like reNO
Hahahaha oh wow, are they for real? I'd love to meet the guy/woman who made that decision and look at them like I'd do at a rare animal in the zoo.
Avatar fits. Also why in the world would you make such a thing? Profits are going to be cut severely by something like this
you wouldn't download a battery for your car...
So the battery has software that forces subscriptions?
Offline mode can not be enabled; account credentials not found.
Unless it can't post automatically Facebook statues while I'm driving solo, I don't understand why my battery has to be always online. Atleast Simcity can do that.
And they didn't think for a millisecond that Tesla would have an even greater advantage over them in the electric car market because of this?
Well, they're going to go the way of the dodo.
Avatar fits. Also why in the world would you make such a thing? Profits are going to be cut severely by something like this
How would that cut your profits? I thought this was a common practice with car rental places, they cut your car if you stop paying for it or don't return it on time. Of course, that being said, it's a bit ridiculous that you would have to rent the battery, but maybe they compensate for that by charging you a lower amount overall? Let's not all jump to conclusions just because we see DRM
I hope the sales will be absolutely abysmal and they will just have to deal with their retarded decision costing them money. :)
This is the sort of stuff I expect to read on The Onion, for fuck's sake!

devil's advocate- maybe it's a super low fee just to say "Yes I'm here" and if you stop making payments it's assumed the car was stolen or something? or maybe it's an optional package specifically for rental places to hold more control
Welp, there goes the gaming/cars comparisons
devil's advocate- maybe it's a super low fee just to say "Yes I'm here" and if you stop making payments it's assumed the car was stolen or something?
Why not just have a killswitch then? If a car is stolen, the owner contacts them and says "Hey, my car is stolen, please disable."
And so electrocars failed
Why not just have a killswitch then? If a car is stolen, the owner contacts them and says "Hey, my car is stolen, please disable."
And it turns out the killswitch is permanent and your car was actually in the garage and you forgot to look there :v:
Why not just have a killswitch then? If a car is stolen, the owner contacts them and says "Hey, my car is stolen, please disable."
maybe in case they kill the owner of the car as well? /sarcasm
UPGRADE TO RENAULT GOLD FOR 1 MINUTE EXTRA RENTING TIME ONLY $99.99!!
And it turns out the killswitch is permanent and your car was actually in the garage and you forgot to look there :v:
You probably deserve it then.
Why not just have a killswitch then? If a car is stolen, the owner contacts them and says "Hey, my car is stolen, please disable."
Well if you pull out that which communicates with the killswitch, then...free car! This is still a killswitch, except it is activated by inaction, whereas the one you mentioned is activated by action. There are pro's and con's to both, in this case, if the DRM is uncrackable, then the car isn't very easy to steal and keep. Though, most people who steal cars just rip them apart anyway, so...I dunno.
You wouldn't download a car.
I bet the EA did this.

Maybe in an alternate universe where everyone follows all the rules and plays nice, but there's no way in hell that's going to fly in this one.
And they didn't think for a millisecond that Tesla would have an even greater advantage over them in the electric car market because of this?
What is up with that anyway? Do any of the car companies actually hope to have a monopoly on electric cars? Fuck that. If electric cars are ever to become a thing then they should work together, have standardized charging stations that work extremely efficiently with every car and stuff like that, but instead we have shit like this. Healthy competition is great, but slicing up the market like this will not be good for anyone involved, and is a terrible plan in the long run
Also, I just thought of something. Aftermarket batteries! Somebody (Tesla) could make a real killing by selling slightly more expensive batteries with no DRM and they'd sell like fucking hotcakes.
