For some Jewish students in the Pine Bush Central School District in New York State, attending public school has been nothing short of a nightmare. They tell of hearing anti-Semitic epithets and nicknames, and horrific jokes about the Holocaust. They have reported being pelted with coins, told to retrieve money thrown into garbage receptacles, shoved and even beaten. They say that on school buses in this rural part of the state, located about 90 minutes north of New York City and once home to a local Ku Klux Klan chapter president, students have chanted “white power” and made Nazi salutes with their arms. The proliferation and cumulative effect of the slurs, drawings and bullying led three Jewish families last year to sue the district and its administrators in federal court; they seek damages and an end to what they call pervasive anti-Semitism and indifference by school officials.

Some of the affected students saw their grades suffer, and felt socially isolated and depressed, the depositions show. One said he contemplated suicide. The swastikas, drawn or carved onto school property, or even constructed by students out of pipe cleaners, caused much of the anxiety. Sometimes they were accompanied by messages like “Die Jew,” the children testified. “I actually started to hate myself for being Jewish,” D.C., a Pine Bush High School graduate who now attends college, said in an interview. He recalled that around the time of the Jewish holidays, teachers would ask if there were Jewish students in the class. “I learned very, very quickly not to raise my hand,” he said.

At that point, a pickup truck pulled up nearby, and a man emerged. The man, John Barker, 42, a mechanic, cautioned that “everybody watches out for everybody.” When asked about the presence of Jewish families, he blurted out, “We don’t want them in our town.” “They can’t drive, for number one — and they already have Sullivan County. Who really wants them here? They don’t belong here.”
http://www.nytimes.com/2013/11/08/nyregion/swastikas-slurs-and-torment-in-towns-schools.html
Bunch of cunts.
That's pretty fucked up. I had figured that antisemitism was less alive than that in America, surprising to see such an example.
deliverance I'd like to see an oud duel
Oh, hey, that's like five minutes away from where I live. There's a metric fuckton of Hasidic Jewish families in the area, and the one quote wasn't lying when he said "They already have Sullivan county." The article really isn't talking about random people who happen to be Jewish, it's talking about the Hasidics (which isn't mentioned once in the article - it does make a difference).

Holy shit I live a hot skip from Pine Bush. My cousin who lives there said they are building a shit ton of complexes for the Jewish population.
"Please refrain from using racial comments... This man doesn't represent the Jewish community.... I like to think that people just aren't racist for no apparent reason and there's an underlying cause. With it being there parents brainwashing them from a young age or bad experiences with a certain ethnic or religious group. I mean come-on if when you were young regardless of race religion ect and black/muslim/white individual robbed your family member or murdered somebody you knew it would leave an impression. One that would certainly change how you view those individuals.
what the fuck is wrong with these people....
then you work to change that prejudice you don't just go "well a person who happened to be x/y/z robbed me, time to hate all x/y/z"
Ahh until it just so happens your black and a bunch of neonazis beat you up. Or a bunch of blacks play the knockout game and end up killing your father when he hits his head on the curb. It's hard to make a change after traumatizing experiences happen.
"Please refrain from using racial comments... This man doesn't represent the Jewish community.... As an avid cyclist I wouldn't be caught dead riding like that in the middle of the street.
does the prevalence of hasidic jews in any way excuse the rampant, horrifying antisemitism taking place? if not then i don't really see why it makes a difference
I never said it excused it, I'm pointing out that there's a cause (the Hasidic's radical adherence to their laws, which is extremely different to modern social norms) and an effect (people getting weirded out because of the lack of adherence to social norms). Is it wrong either way? Of course it is. But the cause needs to be identified before you can do anything.
Cyclists are allowed up to 1 full lane.
idk the laws where you are from, but even if it's legal taking up the whole lane in a two lane street is an easy way to wind up dead.

[editline]10th November 2013[/editline] Explaining why racism exists in no way excuses it.
yes it does excuse it. it acts as though there can actually be a justification or a legitimate reason to feel and act a way towards an entire race when there isn't.

racism exists because idiots are willing to attribute actions/causes/whatever of a few (or even actions cause whatever that don't exist at all) to an entire race just because they share the same colour/ethnicity. that's it. there is no reason. you getting beaten up by a black guy isn't why you're racist, you getting ripped off by a jewish guy isn't why you're racist. being a moron is why you're racist [editline]11th November 2013[/editline]
There's a belief among the hasidic jews that non-hasidic jews are subhuman slaves placed on Earth to serve them, and that they're inherently superior to all other peoples.
yes it does excuse it. it acts as though there can actually be a justification or a legitimate reason to feel and act a way towards an entire race when there isn't.
So...we shouldn't attempt to understand racism or its causes because you think it legitimizes it? That's stupid as fuck, we should attempt to understand everything even if it's a painful subject, it's the only way we as a culture will be able to fix the problems we face.
i already understand racism. it's ignorance. that's it. the only way to fix it is with education i guess
I'm super glad, but you understanding it doesn't mean that others do, and that's all that matters when it comes to ending racism, by making others understand why it is wrong.
To make this all clear, I live near Pine Bush and attend School there. Pine Bush is filled with several Red Necks and Hicks who are very rascist and anti semetic. Also in my town, Bloominburg, there was recently a scandal between the mayor wherehe allowed, without a vote(he was bribed) for a very costly and extensive development of condos to go up for hesitics. They also have bought out most of my town and are making a private school, which our taxes have to pay for even though we cannot attend, because "we are not Jewish". Basically the whole anti semetic thing is just a bunch of dumb rednecks, and agrivated citizens about our taxes being risen Added: Also a lot of people in the Pine Bush area have the idea that the Hesitic Jews who are moving in are all dirty, assholes. I attend the High School in PB and honestly there isnt much Anti-Semetism people just dont want there taxes raised, and the thing that makes people very mad is that the Hesitics arn't paying the taxes for this because there are a religious organization
I'm super glad, but you understanding it doesn't mean that others do, and that's all that matters when it comes to ending racism, by making others understand why it is wrong.
but saying shit like 'oh some hasidic jews hate all non jews' and shit like that isn't making others understand why it's wrong, it's providing some reasoning for why its RIGHT for some people. when it's never right. you don't understand racism or let people know racism is wrong by providing reasons why people might be racist.
